Update April 2011: As Richard Castle himself said “The con is still on!“. Never ever believe anything you read on April 1st. The obvious clues were of course always using the term “con” and never “convention”, the closing time of 12pm (if you April Fool someone after midday the joke is on you) and of course, the way too generous giveaways! All jokes aside, I hope some day we’ll be able to post this news for real and having seen just how excited so many of you are about the idea of a Castle “con” we hope we can make it happen soon. After sitting quietly on our hands for some time we’re finally excited to announce the very first Official Castle Con! and it’s going to be a doozy! The entire cast will be there including fan favorites Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic as well as writers Andrew Marlowe and Terri Miller.

Fillion says “Cons are great, I always tell the people I work with if you’re having a bad day, if you need to feel better about yourself, go to a con! You have a room full of people hanging on your every word and laughing at all your crappy jokes” and there’s no doubt the cast’s experiences at Paley Festival and the San Diego Comic con last year have made them eager to attend another event.

The most exciting part of this con is that the first 500 people to respond get to attend the con FOR FREE! Leave a message in the comments below by 12pm PDT to be in the running to attend the con for free.

Celebrating Castle Fans

April marks the 3 year anniversary of CastleTV.net. Over the past three years we’ve had a great deal of pleasure bringing you all the latest Castle news (since before there was any news!), giving you a place to discuss all aspects of the show and chat with fellow fans and even members of the cast and crew.

For our last podcast we asked fans what they would do if they won the lottery, inspired by the episode “Lucky Stiff” and as it was so well received we thought we’d invite you to participate again.

Our next podcast episode will be a celebration of the Castle fandom. Perhaps appropriately timed, this week’s episode “One Life to Lose” had some fantastic nods to fans including use of the shipper name “Esplaine” which was first used here in our forums.

Looking back over the past three years what are your fondest Castle fandom memories? Have you made new friends? Has Castle inspired you in some way? Do you have fond memories of an encounter with members of the cast or crew? Do you have a favorite Castle fan fiction author or graphic artist? Castle 2nd Birthday Chat Log

On Saturday March 5th, 2011 CastleTV.net hosted a celebration chat session to recognise Castle’s second birthday on air (Mar 9). The session started off with informal chatter between 9-10pm Eastern which was followed by a group re-watch of the pilot episode “Flowers for your Grave” during which chatters played the “Castle Gummy Bear Game” (a variation on the “drinking game” using Gummy Bears instead of drinks Beckett: “I think I got a pack of gummy bears…”). The game rules were rewritten specifically for the pilot episode.

Towards the end of the episode we were joined by Castle creator Andrew Marlowe and his wife Terri Miller who also produces and writes for Castle. Just as they were leaving Seamus Dever who plays Det Ryan also stopped by with his wife Juliana (who plays Ryan’s fiancée Jenny in the show). For another hour or so after our guests departed we played Castle Trivia with a range of questions about Castle, the fandom, episode quotes and even some Image and Audio guessing games.

Due to popular request we’ve transcribed the chat log.

It is important to note that this was an informal chat session so there were no pre submitted questions. Our guests were happy to just field questions as they were thrown out into the chat room keeping up as best they could. Because the session was informal people could ask questions and speak as they chose. It is important to realise that our guests were very happy with this arrangement and while it’s easy to think they could have been overwhelmed or put off they have all reported back to say how much they enjoyed the chat. During the session they managed to answer a large number of questions from fans and with permission we have transcribed them below for those who were unable to attend.

Terri: I like to write funny. My thing.

Terri: I can do the drama, but given a choice, I go for the fanciful, the romantic and the funny

Terri: No need to apologize… when you have millions of people watching differences of opinion are expected. Not everyone loves everything… makes the world interesting.

rachelxxray: who actually writes the nikki heat books??? I’ve always wondered

Terri: The Nikki Heat books are written by the ruggedly handsome Richard Castle, silly.

Googie: How many takes do the actors have to do to get those wonderful loaded looks?

Terri: The actors do at least two takes, sometimes more… but we shoot in several sizes… close, medium, etc… and on both sides so we do a scene a number of times before it’s shot out.

sspader1: any chance of the team visiting Canada, as a bit of a nod to your leads? Lochlyn Munro gave me chills in the interrogation room, glad to see he’s a BC boy.

Terri: No plans to go to Canada yet.

enjoytheride: Will we see Castle and Beckett and the rest of the precinct at ‘The Old Haunt’…again? LOVE Castle, BTW.

Terri: We refer to The Old Haunt in a future episode but everytime we go there, we’d have to pay a location fee, so maybe we will build it in the future (that’s from Andrew)

oysteinsevag: Terri, when you write the episodes do you have past episodes to use as primers or guides what happens when your writing concurrently how do you keep the threads connected from episode to episode?

Terri: We have a castle wiki, but honestly, Andrew and I remember almost everything… every once in a while we have to double-check something we’ve said before to keep it consistent.

xpenguin: Terri Will there be a gag-reel on the season 3 DVD?

Terri: We intend to put a gag reel on the season 3 dvd, but the content is up to ABC after we put it together.

christyvourcos: I’m sure this has been asked already..how is the process of writing an episode? I’m an english major and it’s gotten me kind of intrested to write for a tv show some day.

Terri: What’s the writing process? we bang our head against the wall until we see stars and then we write about the stars (that was Marlowe

ACF: Terri Do the books give clues to move the development of the characters on the show forward?

Terri: The books are based on Castle’s experiences with Beckett, so the books refer to the previous season’s adventures

WRITER41319: I know this is old news, but there was scene in "Boom" between Beckett and Alexis. I’ve always wanted know what went on in that scene. A snippet would make my day!

Terri: We were trying to find a way to show you the cut scene between Beckett and Alexis in Boom, but we haven’t found the platform from which to show it to you yet… but we are on it.

Terri: We’re talking about putting him in softer, more relaxed clothes because he’s so friggin hot in those flannel shirts

Terri: Andrew says he has a plan for the 100th episode. i’ll have to ask him what it is later. Can’t wait to hear what he’s thinking.

Terri: Nathan and Stana won’t do the audio books

Terri: It’s not that they refuse, it’s just that it would be way too expensive

Terri: I don’t know if we’ll film in new york again. We’ve talked about it, but it’s not super practical. Someone asked about ny locations earlier. We have a person who shoots location stuff for us in New York when we need it and we use a lot of stock shots.

writerserenyty: Terri, I’ve often compared Castle and Beckett to Mulder and Scully and Close Encounters of the Murderous Kind supported that; did you guys have that in mind with the show? How do you feel about that comparison?

Terri: We had that in mind only in that episode and not in the creation of the show (TM)

Terri: AWM says, in the creation of the show we had Nick and Nora Charles, Tracy and Hepburn, Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in mind, as well as Moonlighting.

Googie: Will any of the remaining episodes of this season be as intense or emotionally charged as Countdown was?

Terri: Yes.. there will be more emotinally intense episodes

Terri: My magic episode was one of our most difficult and complex episodes to film

Terri: Because of the magic and the locations and the props

Terri: AWM: Two parter was very difficult because we had to cross board and take advantage of locations and film two epsidoses at same time.

theaquamarine: How is Alexis these days? I think you tweeted that she is a senior in college- is that going to rock the boat with her going away and everything?

Terri: Alexis is a junior in hight school.

TappinCastlefan: Terri – Just curious. Did either of you at all expect something as big as this would be possible when you first got the idea?? I can’t imagine anyone thinking there’d be so many OCD fans like us. You really have made a HUGE difference in all of our lives. In many, many ways. <3

Terri: AWM – TAPPIN’ Whenever you make something in the entertainment field you always hope you’ll connect with an audience and it’s very gratifying to have an impact.

mccrae: Terri: some of the publishing in-jokes are great. Do you have a publishing consultant on the show?

Terri: We don’t have a publishing consultant cuz we’re all writers and we’re pretty savvy about that stuff

xpenguin: Terri Will Nathan be doing a book signing at all for "Heat Rises"?

Terri: We don’t know if Nathan will sign yet.

Nerwen Aldarion: Terri Have you or Andrew ever considered doing a bit part in an episodes?

Terri: Not until we lose 30 pounds a piece, but we’ve both considered it… all I have to do is look at myself standing next to Stana to be discouraged.

Seamus_Dever: The hardest thing about the torture scene was that I had to take out my contacts because the water. I couldn’t see further than 3 feet away. I hate not being to see people that I’m talking to.

Seamus_Dever: They put me on tape for Ryan, then I went to Italy for a week. When I came back there was the final audition.

Seamus_Dever: Our lapel pins are from cops that I know.

Happy Birthday Castle: Special Chat

It’s a little hard to believe how quickly times goes by but also a little confusing when you realise that this week Castle turns 2 years old. While more than half way through its third season, Castle has been on air for only two years. The pilot episode “Flowers for your Grave” aired on March 9th, 2009. Season 1 ran for just 10 weeks. It was quickly renewed a few weeks after the season finished and the second season began only four months later on September 21.

To celebrate two years on air we’ll be hosting a special event in our chat room. We’ll have a group re-watch of the pilot episode “Flowers for your Grave” (You’ll need your DVDs handy or a download from iTunes or Amazon) while playing the “Castle Gummy Bear Game” (no, we won’t be playing poker for gummy bears like Beckett and Castle, this is a a variation of the “drinking game” based on Castle, the rules are on our chat page), we’ll have some fun and games and a couple of giveaways. You just never know who might stop by so be sure to join us!

The chat will start informally around 9pm Eastern US time. We’ll start watching the pilot episode at 10pm and hang around for some more fun after that.

As a part of our Australian Disaster Relief Fundraiser by popular request we now have “OCD: Obsessive Castle Disorder” bumper stickers available for sale.

These high quality vinyl bumper stickers have been donated by the CastleTV.net administrator and 100% (minus paypal & postage) will be sent to the California Browncoats as a part of the fundraiser.

If you would like to purchase more than one you can change the number after you click the Buy Now button. There is a $2 postage fee per order. Postage is cheaper within Australia so the cost price has been reduced for Australians. There may be a delay in postage of stickers, postage takes 10 days (internationally) and we’ll need some time to process your order. If you have not received your order within 3 weeks please don’t hesitate to contact us.

…If You Won the Lottery

This week in the episode “Lucky Stiff” we heard what the Castle characters would do if they won the lottery. What would you do with the money if you won the lottery?

Record your response on audio and email to ifiwon@castletv.net or leave a voicemail message at (818) 824-6077 (Answering machine on our US number) and we might use it in the next podcast!

10-30 seconds is ideal and remember to say your First name or chat/twitter name and your location (at least country if you don’t want to be too specific)

An example would be something like “I’m Beth from Australia, I’d buy a house for myself and for members of my family and then I’d start up a not-for-profit convention company and employ my friend Amanda to run it with me so she could get away from her stinky job. There are also a bunch of charities I’d love to support.”

You don’t have to be completely serious, witty responses are acceptable (but keep it clean).
