And I like you, started to feel bummed about it. But..... on further viewing ( ok A Lot of further viewings ;-} ), I changed my mind. We all know Kate Loves Rick, really loves him, but she does not wear her heart on her sleeve like Rick. So.... When she is hanging from that wall (very Freudian there) and she whispers only Castle's name, when she hears: "Beckett, Beckett hold on", she hears only Castle's voice. Yet we along w/Kate realize after being rescued, it was Ryan's voice. Later quits the force, and goes to the swing set that was in "Rise" where she tells Rick she cannot have the kind of relationship that she wants (and at this point she cocks her head and looks at Rick- i.e. "I cannot have the kind of relationship I want with you.... Castle) until that "Wall" comes down. So what I am trying to say in my babbling way is this: Her wall came down, so when she grabbed Rick at his front door and said "I'm so sorry Castle" 3 times, knowing how deeply she had and has hurt him, that is her " I love you" in that particular moment. For Kate to have reciprocated the 'ILY' to Rick would have been contrived and I believe not in character. Her actions spoke louder than words. Rick backed away at first, not sure where this was coming from, and when she said "He got away and I didn't care; I almost died and all I thought of was you, I only want you", Rick looked very deeply and searchingly into Kate's eyes. He knew she was telling the truth, and that she did love him. I believe with all my heart that we will see and hear Kate say " I love you" to Rick. But it will be true to her in the moment it happens. And when it does, we will all rejoice. Andrew knows his characters, and Nathan and Stana, know their alter egos, it will be an "I love you" that will stand the test of time. The lighting to me was perfect. It was at Rick's front door, probably not a lot of lighting at most front doors. The shadowing was perfect for me. Plus if you notice as Rick is on the phone with Alexis, there are only a few lamps on and he hangs her graduation tassel on one of them. Plus there was a storm outside. The final scene: Kate guiding Rick's hand to her scar, they both now kiss each other gently, warm lighting framing their faces and as their fingers intertwine and hands clasp, the camera moves back to that soft lighting on their faces as Kate smiles and leads the way. All in all, in my opinion, the lighting, the music, the eyes meeting each other, and the KISSES (sigh...) were done tastefully and true to "Castle". And yet, as Lanie once said about the sex scene in "Heat Wave" in the episode 'A Rose for Everafter' Season 2: It had me "reaching for the ice water" Hi dirkstd,

You know, at first viewing I was disappointed that Kate did not say the “I love you” to Rick. And I like you, started to feel bummed about it. But….. on further viewing ( ok A Lot of further viewings ;-} ), I changed my mind. We all know Kate Loves Rick, really loves him, but she does not wear her heart on her sleeve like Rick. So…. So what I am trying to say in my babbling way is this: Her wall came down, so when she grabbed Rick at his front door and said “I’m so sorry Castle” 3 times, knowing how deeply she had and has hurt him, that is her ” I love you” in that particular moment. For Kate to have reciprocated the ‘ILY’ to Rick would have been contrived and I believe not in character. Her actions spoke louder than words. Was I the only one that was bummed that Kate did not tell Rick she loved him? Are we going to have another emotional blockage next season with her not being able to verbally tell him she loves him? I hope not. That and the lighting in the "kiss scene" were the ONLY two things I saw missing. Too dark. Could not make out all the movements. Thoughts anyone? Question. Any suggestions on how I could access it in some other forum would be appreciated. Back on duty tomorrow after three RDOs (regular days off). I promised Megan, our steno who is about to become a sworn officer, that I would draw a sketch of her in uniform that she could give her parents. I'm also working on a "Caskett" cartoon for her depicting Rick & Kate standing back to back in their ballistic vests holding a Derek Storm novel and a Glock respectively, her left hand clasped lovingly within his right. With a corpse in the background of course. If Mad Magazine were still worth reading I'd love to see how a truly gifted caricaturist like Mort Drucker would render Nathan & Stana. I love the smirk on Castle's face as Beckett puts him in to the proper postion. Also, any scene where they speak in unision is good. For example in A rose forever after : She's a taxadermist! My cousin Stephanie is a cop in Illinois, a year younger than me & in her time off, plays the bagpipes and the family is proud of her. I served in the USAF, & am the only female vet in my family. The cast & writers are so good at what they do & get better at it every year. Yes, it is a piece of art and i will enjoy it for a long, long, time!! It has chunks of really terrible academic prose, but is worth it for the insights into marriage (and remarriage) as portrayed on film. Until my "Castle and Philosophy" book comes out (don't hold your breath), it is the best philosophical introduction to "Castle" I know. I too saw all of this and felt all of it but there is know way I could express it as well as you did. I read your article and kept saying "yes", "exactly" and "I saw that too". It is really scary how involved I am with this show. I think I need time off from the show so that I can get grounded again. Although come September, I will be more than ready to start up again. Of course I cannot go cold turkey so you can bet I will be glued to TNT every Thursday from 9-11 starting June 7th. It will be fun to relieve their beginings again. Good night fellow "Casketteers". Tue, 22 May 2012 01:14:39 +0000 http://castletv.net/?p=13519#comment-77028 Genelle, Thanks for the kind words. I think that everything that can be said has already been said about the season four finale, and I agree with almost every posting. As for my tenure in the "community" I think my last five years were the most rewarding. I reluctantly ,at that time, accepted a mid-level supervisory position, never wanted the top job, too much politics and bureaucratic nonsense, and it was a position that I could stay more in touch with the young officers that were placed under my wing so to speak. As the resident"gray beard" at that time, I got the usual good natured ribbing that is common to the profession i.e. "tell us how you used to write up those reports and interviews in parchment and with quill pen" or "now that we have modern firearms, do you miss that bow and arrow"? All that aside they always awarded me with the honor of being by their sides on warrants , interviews and other duties that were so much a part of the job. I never believed in having my door closed or leading from behind. After retirement the young lady who I had supervised replaced me and is not unlike Detective Beckett in many aspects. She is intelligent, tenacious and tireless in her pursuit of evidence in the building of air tight cases and obtaining convictions. After my retirement my wife and I have relocated to warmer climes and escaped the frigid midwest winters. I still train and attempt to maintain quickly perishable skills ,as age increases skills diminish. A recent federal statute (2004) affords all retired officers limited authority on a nationwide basis after certain yearly qualifications are met . I still avail myself to this particular benefit and will continue to do so. I have literally digressed into a meandering tangent I think. As to my favorite modern Beckett/Castle banter and exchange, I will have to paraphrase as I do not recall what season or episode, but Beckett is in the indoor firing range alone honing her already substantial skills with her duty weapon. Castle enters sans no ear protection (not prudent) and they begin to talk. Castle says it is easy when the targets just stay in one place. Somehow he talks Beckett into letting him try out the drill. The first shot is wildly off target and he says " I shot that one off too early" Beckett responds , no problem we can just cuddle instead. She later tells him 'if you can put three shots into the "ten ring" I will give you access to the file ( again paraphrasing). Castle then takes her GLOCK and does a quick" triple tap" center mass, ten ring, and tells her "you are a wonderful teacher". PRICELESS !! Genelle, thanks again for the kind message and perhaps we can talk again. Best Wishes, Steve Q. Genelle,

Marlowe and the team are doing and excellent job at channeling Tracy and Hepburn, with a litle Cary Grant and Rosline Russell thrown in for good measures. As much as we may not like to think about: Castle in season 5 is going to have to walk the tape rope between life and death, in order to solidify Beckett's true feeling for Castle, bring her closer to Alexis and Martha _ I imagine Marlowe and team will sucker punch either mid-season, or at the end of the season. The later makes more sense if you're introducing Castle fater, who will save both their hides! I an a great fan of the shows quality and its writing. As for Mr. Smith, I don't think that he is the type to give in to MM"s pressure easily or at all. And what about Jim Beckett- where does he fit in all this mess? He told Rick that he had lost his wife over this & was about to say he lost something else before he stopped himself. I was sooo excited to see that Beckett and Castle finally got together. It's what I have been waiting for since the show started. The chemistry between the two characters was undeniable! I can't wait to see what the show has in store for us next season. The show has such amazing talented actors. You as an audience can relate to them. The actors do their scenes with passion and you really feel what they are going through. I cried my eyes out when Beckett was shot it was like you could feel the pain that they were are going through especially Castle. Waiting impatiently SJ It’s about time! I could hardly wait for Mondays to come to watch the show. The romantic ending was pretty darned exciting... hot, hot, hot. Wonder what will be in store for next season. Thanks to the incredible writers I'm sure the season will keep us coming back for more! Don't lose the romance in the stories please. Nathan is my hero and I'm going to be 80 in Aug. So you've got us oldies on the hook along with the younger chicks. I agree with Nancy… I could hardly wait for Mondays to come to watch the show.

I not only don't feel weird anymore because I follow a fictional relationship on (GASP!!) a network TV show, but I care deeply for these characters, and find myself rooting for them like I would for other people I love in real life, real time. Or like I did for other epic love stories that I still cry and die for: like Catherine and Heathcliff, Rhett and Scarlett, Romeo and Juliet, Ralph and Meggie (Thorn Birds), Orrie and Madeline (North and South), among so many others. Toronto says above, life'll kill you if you stay with it long enough - is that really unhealthy? I think the major point is... oh, what a ride! Like Mike Royce told Kate, too, in his last letter to her... risking our hearts is why we're alive... with his almost dying words he warned her against the consequences of 'if only.' It is like Robert Browning once so beautifully penned, "T'is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved." I still remember the first time I got my hands on Jane Eyre, on Pride and Prejudice, on The Last of the Mohicans, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Paradise Lost, Hamlet.... There are books out there that change your worldview, and once you've read them, you must read everything else that author has written because you want to understand more, grow more, feel more, empathize more, even with those who are your enemies. Castle is truly the only Network TV show that has made me feel like I am more human after each and every episode. Do some make me mad? Absolutely. Do some make me sad? Desperately. Do others make me laugh at my problems? Positively. Always will be hard to top -- but AWM and Terri Miller have penned other episodes that I didn't think could be better, and the writing team they have put together never ceases to amaze me. And, on top of that, we get great production values, amazing art direction, cinematography, costuming -- and actors who always manage to convince me that they are more and better and different than they should be, given their grueling schedules. So, SafeWordApples -- when you feel the need to write that essential essay on [insert great work of literature] that you actually didn't like, my advice is to remember all the things about Castle that engaged and enraptured you. Now, in an academic setting, I won't go so far as to suggest that you cite Castle (too many Professors look down on television), but use those characteristics you love as a way of explaining what you genuinely saw as flaws in the "great work" (unless your Professor wrote it, in which ignore everything I've said). Ground your opinions honestly in how it felt to connect to the art that makes Castle so special, just as srieley has done in this piece, and I think you will get the grades in school (and the experiences in life) that will make you glad you developed an "unhealthy obsession." There are just so many times one can analyze 3:47 of romantic interlude frame by frame before repeating points made by others. I found myself doing that in my last reply to Tracy, echoing the observation you made about the way Castle's breath caught in his throat after The Kiss. In short, it will be a loonng three months between now and September. P.S. Off. Cindy and I were dutifully looking under bushes and through trash cans this morning in search of a pistol discarded by a man suspected of shooting three people (non-fatally) outside a dance club. I thought of all the times Espo assured Beckett "I got the uniforms checking every dumpster in a five-block radius." When I came to a dumpster containing so many layers of...dreck it resembled an archeological dig, I thought "This one's for you, Javi" before probing gingerly inside with the tip of my baton. (We aren't allowed to call it a nightstick) We never found the gun, but Off. Rhonda located a terrified baby rabbit huddled on a concrete stairway, herded him (?) into a cardboard carton and relocated him somewhere green and shady. So the day wasn't a total loss. Rumor has it that the DVD cover of Castle and Beckett from Season 3 (I think?) was based on the original poster for that film. Wish I had thought of this article! And, I so wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of Rick's reaction. He just came a few hours earlier of putting all his feelings on the table. Confronting Kate and himself. And when she said to his plea of "If you care about me at all, please don't do this" (go after the bad guys), and she basically just told him that he was as important as her pursuit of her justice was. So he had to let go, he loved her to much to see her get killed, (he had been there and done that) and he was done. He had spent 4 years teasing her, cajoling her, bringing her coffee (just to see her smile), getting almost killed a few times himself, and 4 years of loving her. And to feel he was not enough (or so it seemed) was more than he could take. So yes, he hesitated, a thousand thoughts could have gone through his mind at that moment of her grabbing him. He had been waiting for this moment for years, fantasying about it, and now here she is! But why, why now? He did kiss her back at that first kiss, but after her sincere apology, and she tried to kiss him again, he grabbed her arms, pushed her back and asked the question, looking deeply into her eyes for the truth, he saw it and heard it from her lips. Then he could embrace her fully and with all the love and passion that had been building in him. And Kate too, her wall coming down at a rapid pace, knew her cause almost cost her the one man who she knew loved her for who she is (Remarkable, Maddening, Challenging and Frustrating), and she loved him as much. No longer hiding behind her Mother's murder. I know you might be thinking why I just went into all of that, when you already knew it, but I love to write too. Forgive my indulgence (smile). I write poetry and little stories. And apparently, long winded posts like this one. By your posts, I can get a glimpse of your writings. I hope one day you publish, I would love to read about your: "Bookish detective, and his lady love a whip-smart uniform officer". Tell Becca hello for me, I am glad she enjoyed Portland. I love it here, as I do all my Oregon. I hope you and your family visit here also. I have never been to Wisconsin, but would like to see it one day. Oh, and speaking of visiting. Check out in Forums under "Off Topic" a thread called "Trueheart's Castledom". Trueheart is also a contributing author here in the articles. If you have not read any of her renderings do so, it would be interesting to see what you think. Her delight at the Season 4 denouement was tempered by doubts as to the onscreen chemistry of Nathan and Stana. Megan cited Castle's visible hesitation and discomfiture Nain the immediate aftermath of that first scorching kiss. I argued that Nathan was playing a man in turmoil, a man who moments earlier had consigned the last four years to the memory hole and was grieving for a lost love when said lost love materialized on his doorstep. He is wary, even off-putting ("Beckett, what do you want?") and in no way anticipates Kate's response. Her kiss shocks him to his core; four years of repartee and hand-holding and shoulder bumps could not have prepared him for Beckett as sexual aggressor. Listen closely and you can hear a jagged intake of breath, disbelief paired with wild hope. Once he sees her honest yearning and raw emotion he realizes she has come to him with no hidden agendas, and it takes but the touch of her fingertips on his face for the floodgates to open. All in all, I told Megan, a performance of uncommon depth and subtlety by two accomplished actors plying their trade. I write fiction in my off-hours, and one reason I was pulling for Castle and Beckett was that I saw in them a reflection of two of my characters, both based at least in part on cops I've worked with here in Madison "Berkeley with Cows" Wisconsin. My hero is a bookish detective, his lady love a whip-smart uniform officer. No more implausible than a crime novelist who becomes enamoured of a woman homicide cop. Incidentally, my colleage Becca, a beat officer currently on pregnancy leave, visited Portland recently and loves your city. She reports that it parallels Madison in many ways. Until next time... --Phillip Tracy,

I recently discussed “Always” with Megan, a report typist for our department who in a week’s time will be sworn in as a recruit police officer along with 15 other new hires. The art of Castle really doesn't get spoken about enough, and "Always" is one of it's finest examples. I loved the way you broke down the beauty of all it's specific components. I know the popularity of Nathan & Stana, plus the whole "will they/won't they scenario are what the industry assumes drives the Castle fandom. Certainly they play a big part, but the other part is the art and creativity that's put into the show. If there is an argument for Castle as art, it is your article itself. In tweets, on blogs and in forums, Castle inspires its viewers to talk about the art of writing, of acting, the craft of how things were shot, the psychology of relationships etc - as shown by your article. One Castle fanfiction writing is now getting her first book published, a Castle video made it into the finales of national contest, and there are MANY truly amazing Castle videos out there. There are drawings posted on-line and people design icons and wallpaper. In short, the creativity of Castle brings out the creativity of its viewers. Art inspires art. Comment on 12 Classic Castle-ish Movies for Summer by Toronto http://castletv.net/12-classic-castle-ish-movies-for-summer/13538#comment-76976 Toronto Fri, 18 May 2012 20:37:51 +0000 http://castletv.net/?p=13538#comment-76976 I saw "the Moon's Our Home" on a VHS video a long time ago, and (as mentioned) it is for some strange reason not only not on DVD, but a lot of people have never heard of it. The only film most people know Margaret Sullavan from -- she had a hard life -- is "The Shop Around the Corner" with Jimmy Stewart (1940). She was a beautiful, funny actress. Like I said, there are others -- happy for other people to suggest some. I love Carole Lombard to distraction. "My Man Godfrey" is her other great film, with William Powell. One of the few films to deal with the Depression in a semi-comic way (or at all, for that matter). Powell, from the city dump, becomes her butler. An hour and a half of sheer bliss. For Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn, "Hoilday" (1938) is their other pairing, which is an odd play-turned-film, but fun to watch. She's a socialite, he's a "self made man". "Only Angels Have Wings" (1939) is Cary Grant as a mail pilot and Jean Arthur as a wisecracking singer meeting in a South American bar/airport/fliying business. Pure escapism. "Notorious" is a great film, great recommendation. To Have and Have Not has always been one of my favorite films. I, too, have seen all of these except The Moon's Our Home. It's available from Facets Multi-Media - facets.org It's currently listed as out-of-stock, but it says they will have more coming in. What a great list!
