Bonus: Cameos by mystery writers

Nathan Fillion is starring in a new mystery show on ABC. “Castle” premieres March 9 (http://castletv.net/). Fillion plays a mystery writer who ends up helping a police detective solve crimes. Looks like light fun mystery, instead of grim morbid mystery. Yes, there’s still plenty o’ murder, but the focus is on the catching of the criminal, not the commission of the crime. Someday I must try to put down my theory of fictional callousness, whereby some stories full of murder are morbid and depressing, and others full of just as much murder are light and cheerful. This looks like the latter type. Bonus: cameos by actual mystery writers at Castle’s weekly poker game. Worth a try, anyway.

Fillion is really really fun to watch

Castle: Nathan Fillion solves crimes…Thank you Hammer Man! LOLZ. OK, for serious, I’m looking forward to this. I mean, Fillion is really really fun to watch. He was fun to watch on Firely, and on DH (Season 4 peeps, he plays Katherine’s husband, you’re welcome!) and he was really really fun to watch in Dr. Horrible (I will continue to pimp it. I will spread the NPH love anyway I can) and the girl looks pretty good too. ABC has been on kind of a hot streak with new shows in the past five years (They also cancel the good stuff, I’m talking about you PushingDaisiesDirtySexyMoneyCashmereMafia) so they’ve got a leg up.

Promising Mid Season Offering

Nathan Fillion stars in this mystery/comedy as a famous author who switches from inventing murders to investigating them.

Having watched CBS and Fox prosper with such sort-of-romantic, star-driven mysteries as “The Mentalist” and “Bones,” ABC gets in the game with “Castle.” They’ve certainly hired the right star for the task in Nathan Fillion, who seems set to move past his “Firefly” cult status to mass appeal. Throw in an excellent partner in Stana Katic as the cop who has to put up with Castle’s amateur sleuthing and you have the makings of an entertaining weekly diversion.

To be sure, if what you want from TV is originality and innovation, you should look elsewhere: “Castle” is the electronic equivalent of comfort food. But these days, who couldn’t use a little comfort?
