Jose Molina wrote the Castle episode “Famous Last Words” and was invited to chat with fans about the episode and his experience on Castle. Around 60 people attended the chat session which began just after 11pm (Eastern Time) and while the formal part of the session finished nearly an hour later, Jose generously stayed on to chat with fans in an open session.

QUESTION: [sarah_darling] Jose – If you could write for a guest star of your choosing, who would it be and why? (More then one guest star is okay too!)

[Jose Molina] Hmm… all the guest stars in all the world is a tempting question…

[Jose Molina] Realistically speaking…

[Jose Molina] I wrote an episode of WAT with Summer Glau in mind {Admin note: WAT = Without A Trace}

[Jose Molina] we offered it to her, but she was unavailable

[Jose Molina] I’d love to work with Summer again, or really any of the Firefly cast

[Jose Molina] of all the guest stars in the world…

[Jose Molina] probably Colin Firth or Rob Pattinson, just to make my wife jealous

[Jose Molina] for Castle’s sake…

QUESTION: [YouSmellLikeCherries] Jose, I started watching Firefly for the first time after last week’s Castle references, and I see that you worked on Firefly as well. I am loving this show just as much as Castle! I was wondering, though, what did your job entail as Executive Story Editor?

[Jose Molina] ESE is really a title more than a job description

[Jose Molina] it means you’ve been around for a little while, but not enough to produce your own eps

[Jose Molina] Tim Minear supervised me on “Ariel” and I worked with ben edlund on “Trash”

[Jose Molina] but my job was to write, write, write

QUESTION: [sheryllnkansas] In the past few years you have been writing/producing for some very serious/intense series, are you enjoying the addition of humor to the mix when writing/producing for “Castle”? Plus, is it harder to write humor or drama?

[Jose Molina] LOVING the addition of humor

[Jose Molina] and romance

[Jose Molina] When I left WAT, I literally updated my facebook and said “I will NEVER write int. interrogation room again”{Admin note: WAT = Without A Trace}

[Jose Molina] as much as I enjoyed and learned from WAT and SVU, I was burnt out on the genre {Admin note: SVU = Law & Order: SVU}

[Jose Molina] when I first heard of “Castle,” I was like “cops, procedurals, NEW YORK — NO!!!!”

[Jose Molina] then I read Andrew’s script, saw the show with Nathan and Stana and I couldn’t stay away {Admin note: Andrew Marlowe}

[Jose Molina] Can’t stay which one is harder to write

[Jose Molina] I can say comedy is obviously more fun

QUESTION: [spinja] Will you be writing more Castle episodes?

[Jose Molina] yes

[Jose Molina] Currently scheduled to do episode 14

QUESTION: [MnCastleFan] I wanted to congratulate you on your writing success and being a role model for the Latino community. When writing a show, do you have a choice on the murder location for instance having a crime in a Hispanic/Latino community? If so, would you be able to represent the generally strong family bond that exists or would that be too difficult?

[Jose Molina] wow… role model.. never thought of it that way…

[Jose Molina] The writing of a show is very collaborative

[Jose Molina] so it’s not so much about “having a choice” as it is about finding the best way to tell the best story

[Jose Molina] I am always very careful to not perpetuate sterotypes, though

[Jose Molina] if for no other reason because they are cliche and boring

[Jose Molina] but you look at “Franco Marquez” from last night’s show, he doesn’t look like what you’d expect a guy with that name to look like

[Jose Molina] then again, you don’t expect most guys to look like that!

QUESTION: [saucy214] 1. When you write an episode of Castle, which comes first, the crime/mystery or the development of character interrelationships? The two fronts of the story typcially seem to be intertwined.

[Jose Molina] It varies

[Jose Molina] For instance, “When the Bough Breaks” always had the element of the book being published

[Jose Molina] that came before there was a plot

[Jose Molina] because we knew when it landed on the calendar

[Jose Molina] there are certain goals that we have in mind for where the relationships should be at given times, but…

[Jose Molina] we sometimes start with an intentional Castle/Beckett storyline and sometimes with the crime

[Jose Molina] lame answer, but the truth is “it depends from ep to ep”

QUESTION: [spinja] Loved the foreshadowing of the Hayley Blue character in a previous episode, via a t-shirt. Do you have any particular familiarity with the current music biz in the US? The story seemed to come with an insider’s knowledge. The characters were all very true to the life. (former music reporter here)

[Jose Molina] I’d just read “Appetite for Self-Destruction” and am a life-long music buff who LOVES all things music-related

[Jose Molina] Can’t say I’m a huge fan of what’s happening in music right now, although Hayley’s name is a pretty big clue as to ONE band I enjoy

[Jose Molina] I’ve probably seen every “Behind the Music” ever, and am a VH1 junkie

[Jose Molina] It’s all from an outsider’s pov, but a die-hard fan’s pov {Admin note: pov = Point of View}

QUESTION: [ashley_slomo] I noticed that Beckett seemed to know a lot about rehab/substance abuse. She was talking about Hayley’s “exit interview” before she left rehab and how Sky wouldn’t stop using until she wanted to. Did this have anything to do with her father’s alcoholism? Will we find out more about that in this season?

[Jose Molina] I know all the writers would love to see B’s dad at some point soon

[Jose Molina] But the insider’s knowledge is more a cop’s knowledge than it is an al-anon’s member

[Jose Molina] At one point I had a reference to her dad when b knows about the “Ellison-King Rehab Clinic,” but I ultimately lost it because it seemed unnecessary

[Jose Molina] Cops see drugs and the behavior they elicit so often that there was no need to gild that particular lily

QUESTION: [Actress27] What was the scene you enjoyed most when writing Famous Last Words?

[Jose Molina] hmm…

[Jose Molina] good one…

[Jose Molina] still thinking…

[Jose Molina] Probably the “she hated Obama” scene

[Jose Molina] There was originally an opening where the body is discovered

[Jose Molina] where we hear “Here Kitty Kitty” as we’re following a cat down an alley

[Jose Molina] the cat stops to drink from a puddle of blood, and camera tilts up to see Hayley

[Jose Molina] that got cut, but it was a fun, creepy opening

QUESTION: [rvandsing] I’d like to know how the writers coordinate a specific story line from week to week. For example, we know there’s a story line about Beckett’s mother’s death. So, how do the writers handle incorporating that particular thread into multiple episodes?

[Jose Molina] We’re geniuses

[Jose Molina] We have a lot of communication between the writers

[Jose Molina] and ultimately marching orders from Andrew about where the arcs are going

[Jose Molina] it’s just a matter of figuring out how much can fit into an episode and be satisfying w/o overwhelming the main plot

[Jose Molina] but ultimately all the writers share pieces of the puzzle like good little boys and girls

[Jose Molina] For instance, I know what’s happening next in B’s storyline — as does everyone else

[Jose Molina] as well as where we want to go

[Jose Molina] and ultimately we can pitch dropping parts of the puzzle into each ep as we go

[Jose Molina] Hope that answers that

QUESTION: [Lindsey] Jose, as DVR and other non “traditional” viewing options become more popular, advertisers seem to be looking for opportunities to integrate products into shows- what is your opinion, from a writer’s perspective, on writing product placements into your scripts and where do you see the role of product placements in the writing process going in the next 3 to 5 years?

[Jose Molina] I think it’s fine if u can do it elegantly and it doesn’t interfere w/ the story

[Jose Molina] I think it’ll continue to happen over the next few years, but I sometimes think we may go the way very old school on this and have shows “brought to you” by advertisers

[Jose Molina] like when Ford presented 24 w/o commercials

[Jose Molina] at least, I’d LIKE to see that be the case

[Jose Molina] As a viewer, you go “thanks, Ford, glad I don’t have to watch commercials” and that’s that

[Jose Molina] (btw, by “old school,” I mean like back in the days when I Love Lucy was brought to you by Ovaltine or some such…)

QUESTION: [Tabz] Since you’re on such a crunch to write all the time, how do you overcome writer’s block?

[Jose Molina] You only get writer’s block when you stop — we can’t stop, so it’s not a luxury

[Jose Molina] if you’re stuck and you feel like your scene sucks, you STILL have to move on

[Jose Molina] if your scene DOES suck, you have to trust that someone else is going to help you make it better

[Jose Molina] that’s one of the reasons you need a staff of writers, we all have to pick up each other’s slack

[Jose Molina] but when you’re on a deadline, you just write, whether you’re “feeling it” or not

QUESTION: [Piratelabs] You and fellow writers seem to have some liberty with including small tips of the hat to shows that mainly Nathan has worked on (those his fanbase and fanbase of this show also enjoy). Frankly I think that makes watching the show and ‘listening’ to the show even more interesting for us the viewers (and fans!). I was wondering, since both your lead actors are Canadian born will there be any nods to Canadians?

[Jose Molina] Problem is, none of the writers are Canadian!

[Jose Molina] although one of our assistants is, and he carries the maple leaf flag proudly

[Jose Molina] I’m sure the nods are in there, ad-libbed by Nathan and Stana

[Jose Molina] there’s always a million little things in each ep that you only “get” if you know what to look for

QUESTION: [shellerinka] What is involved in being a producer and how does one become one?

[Jose Molina] In TV, there are writer-producers and non-writer-producers

[Jose Molina] I’ll speak to the writer kind

[Jose Molina] Producing your ep means everything from the first word on the page to the last minute of post production when you’re mixing the sound

[Jose Molina] from casting to wardrobe to shooting to editing, etc.

[Jose Molina] There are whole departments that do all the work, and as producers we give direction and make choices as to what we want or don’t want per the script/episode

[Jose Molina] believe it or not, I had to make a lot of hair decisions on this ep!

[Jose Molina] and I’m a supercuts kinda guy

[Jose Molina] but I knew what it was supposed to look like, I communicated that to the hair dept.

[Jose Molina] and they deliver

[Jose Molina] u become a writer-producer by being a working writer long enough and on-the-job training

[Jose Molina] as an ESE, I learned a lot from joss, tim and ben for instance

[Jose Molina] becoming a writer-producer is a process — you graduate to it

QUESTION: [Kcat] Jose, I bet it is great fun for you to work with Nathan, first on Firefly, now on Castle. How does he inspire you as a writer?

[Jose Molina] It’s amazing fun, yes

[Jose Molina] He’s an amazing guy

[Jose Molina] a complete professional in every sense of the way

[Jose Molina] it’s incredibly easy to write for him because he can pull off anything

[Jose Molina] drama or comedy

[Jose Molina] it’s inspiring because it gives you a lot of freedom to try a lot of different things

[Jose Molina] you can ask him to juggle chainsaws (in acting terms) and he will

[Jose Molina] so our challenge is to give him as many chainsaws as possible… and a unicycle… and a guy shooting rubber bands at his head

QUESTION: [caskett-beckle] Jose-I came to Castle as a Stana Katic fan. What is it like working with her?

[Jose Molina] Also awesome

[Jose Molina] Another true pro

[Jose Molina] The hours these guys work is insane, and Stana has to put up with additional hassles of hair and makeup and look as gorgeus as she does on next to no rest

[Jose Molina] and does so w/o complaining one bit

[Jose Molina] During my shoot, she was scarfing down some koo koo roo on set (at like 4 pm) and I was shocked that she hadn’t demanded to be fed a proper meal

[Jose Molina] I’m like “you’re the star of the show, the least you can do is demand food!”

[Jose Molina] Nathan and Stana (and the rest of the cast) make it a pleasure to be on set

[Jose Molina] and now i’ve ruined it and they’re gonna become huge divas!

QUESTION: [Vivaladorkmaster] What advice do you have for aspiring writers?

[Jose Molina] It’s a cliche, but the best advice is WRITE

[Jose Molina] All the time

[Jose Molina] Don’t be precious about it, just try to crank out more and more material

[Jose Molina] You’ll get better the more you do it

[Jose Molina] on a creative level, I’d say it’s always wise to try to absorb as much as you can — news, art, travel

[Jose Molina] It all educates who you are and what you write

[Jose Molina] and the more “full” you are as a person, the better your writing will be

[Jose Molina] on a practical level, if you’re trying to break into TV writing, you should seek entry-level work on a show

[Jose Molina] Don’t be bashful, we all paid our dues

[Jose Molina] Answer phones, get coffee, work 80-hr weeks for peanuts

[Jose Molina] It’ll pay off in the end

QUESTION: Last formal question and then Jose has agreed to stay for a little while for a general chat

QUESTION: A couple of people have asked about the opening this season and want to know if the more creepy opening from season 1 will be back.

[Jose Molina] We’re not opposed to it, but it’s hard to do those crazy stagings and keep the stories believable

[Jose Molina] If we come up with a great idea, we’ll use it

[Jose Molina] but there’s only so many times you can stuff someone in a safe and have a plausible reason for it

[Jose Molina] The “Here Kitty” opening I was talking about earlier is an instance where we entertained the notion

[Jose Molina] but ultimately we agreed that starting with a fun Castle moment and landing in the personal story immediately was a better way to go

[shellerinka] Heat Wave reads very much like an epi, is that how much you need to write per episode?

[MichyGeary] How helpful are Heat Wave sales to the renewal of Castle? Does it matter at all when ABC decides what shows to renew?

[YouSmellLikeCherries] Jose, Have you ever strongly disagreed with a direction that another writer/writers have chosen to take and felt that something that the character said/did was not something that really fit the character? Is it hard, generally, to agree on scripts or does everyone sorta know the characters well and have a mutual understanding of how they should act?

[Kcat] Wow, what a gift you’ve given us tonight. You really are a genius! You would be an excellent teacher! I’ve learned a lot from you just now! You mentioned before that Anna Waronker did 99%, but did you write any of the lyrics last night?

[Jose Molina] re: lyrics — there were certain specific things we needed from Anna

[Admin] I think we had a simliar number of chatters here last week for Terri I think we’ll call it a draw.

[Jose Molina] and she gave us those specific things — the “crossing of the treshold,” for instance

[jessicarosen] Love that you all Twitter and that we can work to keep the show on the air by RTing and Tweeting to friends. Thanks for doing that. Makes us feel like a part of the show. I’m a novelist and have found many fans of the show in the writing community. Just a comment.

[MichyGeary] Would you ever consider working with a music artist like that again? I don’t mean similar storyline, but working that closely with a musician?

[MichyGeary] Jose — I know the writers want to “take their time” with Castle/Beckett, but do you think there could be some physical moments between them that would add to the tension rather than destroy it? I’m not suggesting they start dating since I agree that would eliminate a lot of the fun. But maybe if they were allowed some moments of physicality, it would make things more awkward?

[sarah_darling] Jose -you said that you’re doing episode 14… Is that going to be around the Christmas holidays? Are we going to get a Christmas/New Years episode?

[Jose Molina] Cherries… maybe…

[gfunk] Castle’s reputation with women is talked of a bit, but will we see more of it? how will it be handled without viewers losing respect for him?

The new Disney 3D animation film “A Christmas Carol” is the retelling of Charles Dickens classic novel about a Victorian-era miser taken on a journey of self-redemption, courtesy of several mysterious Christmas apparitions. “A Christmas Carol” starring Jim Carrey opens around the world this weekend.

Of interest to Castle fans, the voice of Belinda Cratchit is played by Molly C Quinn [Alexis Castle].

Jose Molina, writer of the episode “Famous Last Words” has agreed to join us for a special chat on Tuesday November 3rd.

In addtion to writing for and producing Castle, Jose’s past TV involvement includes series’ like Without a Trace and Law & Order SVU but he is perhaps best known for his work on Joss Whedon’s Angel and Firefly as a story editor and writer of the episode Ariel and co-writer of the episode Trash.

The chat session will be on Tuesday 3rd November (are we really in November already??), starting at 11pm Eastern Time (8pm Pacific Time). The rules will be simliar to last time but I will clarify a few things soon.

Terri Miller, Castle Producer and Writer of this week’s episode “Vampire Weekend”, has generously agreed to join us for a chat session this Wednesday night. “Vampire Weekend” is a Halloween episode and airs tonight at 10/9c.

Technical Issues

We haven’t had the opportunity to test the chat room at high capacity, please be aware that if we have a larger than expected number of people attending this may cause issues with the server. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
There are some known issues you may encounter, please read below carefully.
1. Internet Explorer 8: If you are using Internet Explorer 8 you must turn on compatibility mode. There should be a button to the right of your browser’s address bar to turn compatibility mode on. This will prevent some layout issues caused by this browser. The chat room seems to work best in Firefox so if you have FireFox on your computer we recommend you use it for the chat session.
2. Timeouts: There is a bug in the system that causes some people to time out even when they’re active in the chat room. If you see an orange bar with an error message saying you are not connected, please refresh the page. This usually solves the problem.

Since it was hot off the press less than a month ago Richard Castle’s “Heat Wave”, the novel based on Detective Kate Beckett from the TV series Castle, has continued to rise above all expectations. In many online stores “Heat Wave” has been so hot that it’s now on back order and deliveries are expected to take a couple of weeks.

Two weeks ago “Heat Wave” was listed on the New York Times Bestseller list for Hard Cover Fiction at #26 and last week it dropped back to #28. The NYT Bestseller list is calculated on sales figures from two weeks prior. Two weeks ago, “Heat Wave” featured prominently in the Castle episode “Fool Me Once” showing Beckett being caught by Castle as she secretly searches the pages for the hot and sweaty “sex scene”. Castle points out that it’s on page 105 (yes, it really is). After the episode aired, ABC played an advertisement for the novel, bringing it to the attention of many viewers who were previously unaware that the real book actually existed.

Sales for the book immediately started to rise and “Heat Wave” soared from more than 200 on the Amazon Bestseller List to 8th position! This rise has also been reflected on the NYT Bestseller list with an impressive increase from #28 to #11. It is entirely possible that by next week “Heat Wave” will have made it into the top 10, an amazing achievement for novel written by a fictional character!

Heat Wave Soars

After the exciting news of Castle’s back 9 pick up earlier today, sales of “Heat Wave” have continued to increase. Barnes & Noble are now out of stock with Heat Wave having reached #1 on their Bestsellers list.

After dropping back to 9th position, “Heat Wave” is now rising up the charts and is currently at its highest point in 6th position. Amazon still has “Heat Wave” in stock so get your copy before it sells out.

Last week “Heat Wave” dropped back slightly on the New York Times Bestseller list however a significant increase is expecting when the new figures are released late this week due to the high sales on Amazon and elsewhere for the week in question.

UPDATE: Heat Wave is also #6 at Books-A-Million. Currently the novel is on backorder at most online retailers and will take 2-6 weeks for delivery.

Castle Signing a Huge Success

An estimated 400 people attended the book signing for Richard Castle’s latest New York Times Bestselling novel “Heat Wave” held at the Barnes & Noble at The Grove in LA last night.

The evening began with Nathan Fillion answering questions at a short Q&A session.

Fans were delighted when Castle actor Nathan Fillion (Rick Castle) was joined by other cast members Ruben Santiago Hudson (Captain Montgomery), Seamus Dever (Det Ryan) and Jon Huertas (Det Esposito).

To top it off, Executive Producers Andrew Marlowe, Rob Bowman and Laurie Zaks attended as well as other members of the crew including writer/producer Terri Miller and producer Joan van Horn.

Fillion, Dever and Huertas signed from a table at the front while other members of the cast and crew walked among the crowd signing copies of “Heat Wave”.

Unfortunately no other signing events are scheduled at this time but we will keep this site updated with info should any more opportunities arise.
