Ok, I didn't see this mentioned anywhere else on the boards, so, sorry if it is but…

Did anyone else read "The Ryan Report" last week? Ryan was talking about being superstitious and he mentions some of the little superstitious quirks that everyone has. Talking about Beckett he says, "Or as secretive as a particular homicide detective who thinks nobody has noticed that she has to put all her little elephant statues in a straight line when she first sits down in the morning." Anybody else catch that?

So, I didn't think much of it when I read it, other than just a passing thought of, "Oh, I wonder if there really are little elephant statues on her desk?" But then, I was re-watching 2x05 and I totally saw them!! I was like, "AH! Hey! There they are! There's Beckett's little elephant statues that she rearranges every day!" So then I had to go back and see if I could see them in other episodes, and what do ya know? I saw them as far back as the premiere of season two and as far forward as last night's episode. That made me completely happy and now it's definitely become a game for me to look for them. I haven't checked season one yet but trust me, I will!

Now I'm going to have to check out some episodes and take a look at those elephants LOL

Yeah! Just FYI there's a really good shot of them in 2x05 at 28:13. It's the part where Castle comes back to get his sunglasses and they're both mad at each other so she tells him to take his stupid russian nesting dolls. When he's picking them up you can see that they're right by her elephants. Smile

Too funny. I am the opposite. I'm a big fan of elephants (real or art) and noticed her little set many episodes ago. I can't recall how long they've been there but I'll be re-watching my season 1 DVD to find out. I was excited to see that Ryan mentioned them in his report.

I only see like 1 and a half on her desk, but it sounds like there is more. :)

Castle: Just waiting for my partner. Maybe you've seen her, pretty girl, thinks she can leap tall buildings in a single bound,

Beckett: She sounds like a handful.

I didn't realize she kept those! I thought after the case where Castle buys them was solved that she took them home or they just disappeared, since Beckett made some crack about how they ugly up her desk. I'll be watching for them in the future now.

i love it how even the little details of Castle makes me laugh. although the elephants are pretty kool.

i mus admit that after reading this i went and checked ep 2x05 to see them. now i will be looking for them in future episodes :)

I'm pretty sure we're all going to be looking for the elephants from now on! I vote that it be added to the drinking game rules: Take a drink whenever Beckett's elephants show up on screen. Laugh

If I may say those are not little elephants. Those are russian dolls. You have dolls of similar but smaller inside when you open them. Then another then another. There is a scene were Castle is showing them to Karpowski in the episode where the mother of the child was murdered by the doctor who replaced her baby. Hope you guys remember.

To the right of those, there are white elephants. Well, there's only one and a half shown there.

I didn't think those looked like elephants, but I know little to nothing about Russian culture, so I figured I'd take everyone's word for it. Now i'll DEFINITELY be looking for these elusive elephants.

so… what was the meaning for the pachyderms? i couldn't think of anything… finally went to wikipedia:

"Elephant in the room" (also "elephant in the sitting room", "elephant in the living room", "elephant in the parlor", "elephant in the corner", "elephant on the dinner table", "elephant in the kitchen", "elephant in the champagne room", and "elephant on the coffee table") is an English idiom for an obvious truth that is being ignored or goes unaddressed. The idiomatic expression also applies to an obvious problem no one wants to discuss.^[1]

It is based on the idea that an elephant in a room would be impossible to overlook; thus, people in the room who pretend the elephant is not there might be concerning themselves with relatively small and even irrelevant matters, compared to the looming big one.
