It struck me that Castle has a lot in common with Peter Wimsey.  If you're not familiar with this character, a creation of Dorothy L. Sayers, then you might want to check them out.  Sayers wrote in the 1930s and was part of the golden age of detective fiction along with Agatha Christie.

Peter Wimsey is an English Lord in the 1920s who solves crimes as a hobby.  He plays the fool sometimes in order to put people off the track but as his man Bunter puts it, he's "sharp as a bacon slicer, that man."  Every book brings a new revelation as to the true depth of the man behind the monocle.  (It kind of reminded me of Castle being a crack shot – undisclosed depths…)  There are a number of short stories and full-length novels out and I don't believe they have ever gone out of print.  BBC and Masterpiece Theater have also filmed the major works with Ian Carmichel or Edward Petherbridge cast as Lord Peter Wimsey.

The last 4 novels (starting with Strong Poison) team him with Harriet Vane, a mystery writer, and the tension between them is very much like Beckett and Castle.  They meet as Hariet is being tried for the poisoning murder of her lover and Peter takes the case.  There are even 3 novels "co-written" with Sayers after her death based on her notes that continue the canon, or as the writings are refered to in the Realm of Wimsey fans, The Corpus.

If anyone ends up reading them, let me know.  I'd be interested in if you make any connections…

The series sounds really interesting ACF, and like something I'd enjoy!  I'll add it to my list of books to read…

Love these!  Especially William Monk.  He is such a wonderful complex character.  And I love the Bryant and May mysteries.  They make me want to go on one of those walking tours that Bryant does just to hear the off-the-beaten-path history.  I was facinated by the underground rivers!

The Irene Adler book sounds interesting.  I think I will look that one up.

You might also like:

PD James "Adam Dalgliesh" series – modern day (Well, 1970s to present…)  AD is a London police detective who writes poetry to deal with the tragedies in his past.  The first 15 or so novels were adapted fro television by the BBC starring Roy Marsden.  Martin Shaw played the characgter in 2 recent TV movie adaptation - Death in Holy Orders and The Murder Room, both for BBC.

If you like historical mysteries:

Susanna Gregory  "Matthew Bartholomew" series set in Cambridge during the black plague years.  MB is a physician who uses forensics (Instead of astrology) to treat patients as well as solve murders.

Ellis Peters "Brother Cadfael" series set in Medieval Shrewsbury.  BC is a monk and herbalist who joined the abbey after being a solider in the Crusades.  Really good BBC Masterpiece theater adaptations starring Derek Jacobi too.

David Dickinson "Lord Powerscourt" series set Edwardian England usually involving a high profile bit of history.

SInce I am a BIG Martin fan I did read several of these  when I  heard that Martin would be in a series of the  films

Nowadays I find my  "Need something to read" either at the hospital pick a book/return a book bin or my laundromat has a shelf of paperbacks–think I have read ALL of those

Read several of these as well when I saw Derk Jacobi in the Masterpiece  pieces

Did you like The Murder Room or Death in Holy Orders?  I loved both and wish they would make PD James' last 2 novels into movies with the same actors.  Martin Shaw was a perfect Dalgliesh.  I like my heros a bit flawed – case in point – Castle!  (…and Wimsey, Mal Reynolds, William Monk, Sherlock Holmes, House… not to mention FItzwilliam Darcy, George Knightley and Edward Rochester…)  Smile

I know what you mean about having a little bit of history.  Even if it's a modern setting, I like to learn something when I'm reading.  That's why I think I loved the Last Call episode of Castle so much.  I've heard of the speakeasies and Jonny Walker.  My husband has even tried Jonny Walker Blue.  I think I would have been just as giddy about finding something like that as Beckett and Castle were!  Maybe they will write a Nikky Heat book with some secret tunnels – Now that I could get into!
