Thanks for the link.  I just read Chapter 4.  I am flabbergasted by all the grammatical and spelling errors.  I know others have posted about this before, but the errors seem to be worse in this chapter.  For example, “spilt up” instead of “split up” and “barley” instead of “barely.”

Ouch – that is rather concerning.

I had to laugh at Judge Horace Simpson given the actor that plays one of the judges in the show is known for a certain H Simpson character.

Does anyone else get a little excited when you find a reference to an episode in one of the Heat Wave chapters?

Not a little!  A lot! It is like finding the answer to a puzzle–"There! There it is! Another one!"  I really like this book. I wish they had more discussion and wit between Rook and Heat like in the TV show. That relationship is what it is all about.  Nonetheless, I still love it.

"I am not a Suspect.  I am a Human Being." Heh, loved that.

I love the whole reference to the finale episode in this latest chapter! I was totally picturing Jacey Goldberg throughout the whole Mrs. Starr part.

So I finally made it through chapter 3 and 4. And all I can say is wow, how on earth did these chapters make it past an editor? It was like grammar error after grammar error. And in between, there was absolutely no character development, minus the one scene at the end of chapter 3 about Nikki's past. And that drove me nuts too, because when Kate tells Castle about her mom, he says he won't use it – not a firm promise, but I was really hoping that it was going to be something that was between them (Kate and Castle) and not in the book.

But the characters all seemed very one dimensional and the names drive me nuts. If Rook is suppose to be Castle and Nikki is Kate, for a writer, Castle has an interesting view of them.

The more I read (and wonder why I continue reading) the more I think I should just write off the book as a great marketing attempt gone horribly wrong. Such a good idea, but so poorly executed.

P.S. And don't get me started on the product placement going on…

Haha the product placement is done rather shamelessly.

You know, I don't think it's product placement per se. There is a school of thought in writing I've run across that thinks that branding everything is the same as being detailed and specific. The Faith Fairchild mysteries by Katherine Hall are similar. You can't go more than two sentences before hitting a brand name in her mysteries also (well, at least in the first couple–I didn't read more than that).

Not my favorite writing technique, and it dates the book pretty quickly, but Castle is not alone in using it.

I've seen some branding used before, but it was usually references to thinks like McDonalds, or Barnes and Noble. Companies that have been around for a long time and don't immediately date a book. And the references weren't very common. I actually find references to technology as the worst offenders for dating books.

If using references is a technique… ugh, I won't be buying books by those authors. I do believe it's meant to be product placement though. From what I can tell, the books going to be hardcover. However, it's going to be a pretty cheap hardcover, which makes me wonder if the product placement isn't being used to cut down the cost for consumers.

Heh, yeah it didn't seem so at first but it's gotten progressively worse and the product placement is so out of control. I think the writer thinks using product placement is a good shortcut for describing things. Every week I get less and less interested in reading it.

I think the idea is great (it's just an extension of Castle which works because we all love it), but was anyone else slightly disappointed with the writing? I bet whoever is 'ghost writing' this book is not a novelist, there are quite a few mistakes (one of them in the first few lines) and it really bothered me. If Richard Castle is supposed to be an award winning writer, why is his style that of a second year college student. I hope they do a better job editing the next installment because the story is great but the writing doesn't do it justice.

Thank you for saying it first.  I was very disappointed.  I expected better. (To carry the conceit of the marketing campaign further, I suppose ABC could claim Richard Castle was working under a three-week deadline and therefore couldn't turn in a manuscript with his usual level of style and professionalism….)

HOWEVER, I've downloaded all the chapters so far released and I've pre-ordered the book online.  What can I say–it's for completeness's sake.  I wonder who I have to talk to in order to get a shot at ghostwriting the second novel in the series?  If what we've been given is the best we can expect from ABC, I might be able to do it, too.Wink

It's no surprise truth is stranger than fiction. Fiction has to make sense.

You know…..why don't WE do one?  Right here on this forum?  What if we took suggestions from everyone and tried stitching it together as a novel?  Castle might do it.  I can see it now:

INT. Smoky piano bar–Night

Castle has had too much to drink and is plinking away at the piano with the player, doing something like Chopsticks…badly.  And someone heckles him from the audience.  Castle picks up his drink and salutes the heckler with it, grabs the microphone and addresses him.

Castle:  I'm taking requests from the audience tonight.  What shall it be?  Comedy?  Tragedy? ….Murder?

Heckler: We can start by murdering you!  That'd cover all the bases.

The audience starts flinging plot ideas left, right and center and Castle does the pocket-maccarena looking for a pen to write it all down.  Pulls back his sleeve and scribbles on his forearm.

Castle: (reciting what he's written)  Okay, we got 'found stabbed and stuffed in a grand piano'…'pickeled in a bar, Relof'….wait.  Is that a comma or a freckle?  Damn…

And with a start, Castle jerks awake and finds he's….

INT: Bedroom–Night.

…In his bed, sweating out a nightmare.  He turns on the lamp and checks the time.  It's 4:23 in the morning.

Castle:  Whoa… that's the last time I have leftover fish tacos for a midnight snack.

He reaches over with his left hand to turn off the lamp and sees his forearm….scrawled over with pen.

Castle:  Aaaugghhhh!

FADE TO BLACK

I asked someone at ABC about the mistakes in the online chapters and he said that he checked with the Publisher, and all errors were removed from the final version. The online version was pulled from the preview edition before it went to press. I don't know if that makes anyone feel better but….

Akajb, I agree with you, I'm not really even looking forward to the chapters anymore. It's just such dreadfully painful reading that I definitely can't justify buying the book. That's a good theory about the product placement, and I can't help but feel like–if that is indeed the case–instead of frustrating the readers, they could just make it public that yes, this book is brought to you by an alphabet soup of corporations.

Taimdala, I wouldn't be surprised to see them try to use a (dare I say?) cop-out like that to justify the writing. I just don't think anyone would buy it, I mean what author forgets to include simple things like character descriptions, mannerisms, and the simplest of details. I didn't realize how much I take these things for granted in books until I started reading these chapters that are completely omitting those things.

And hotdmoss, do you know if the person at ABC meant that they simply fixed spelling mistakes, or did they add in the missing elements (descriptions/take out the blatant endorsement) to make it more novel-like?

As of now, these chapters are reading more and more like a poorly written 'fan fic' and I have to say that this brilliant promotional idea has been a pretty big let down so far. :(

pocket-maccarena

I am SO stealing that LOL, fair is fair.

I really hope they fix the book as I've ordered it and have so far resisted reading any of the chapters posted on line. I will be very pissed off if its junk. It does have such potential if done right. Done wrong it will turn people off in droves.

Yer I reckon we could get Castle into all sorts of mischief. How about 100 word challenge drabbles?

Let me tell you something about crazy people. The sex is unbelievable.

Same goes for copying the series. In a nutshell its stealing from the actors who would otherwise get royalities etc for sales. Same goes for downloading songs from the internet and coping DVD, its stealing. Might not matter to you but it will to someone.

Lol I downloaded the episodes a while back but I still plan on snatching the DVD when it comes out Laugh I only got the episodes earlier so I could watch them after hours when I don't have the internet around.

It's really too bad that this book isn't very good quality because it was such a good promotion idea by ABC and I was looking forward to keeping up with each chapter and then buying the book, but reading the first few chapters you can just tell it isn't at the proper caliber.

Hi SHumster, welcome to the forum!

I think there are a few people out there that agree with you, there are certainly appears to be a few issues with the novel.
