ABC Survey on Last Call

Yesterday on my way here (I know, I should make THIS site my home page), I accidently clicked on the ABC Castle button in my browser instead of the CastleTV.net button.

Well a "slide in survey request" came onto the page asking if I had watched last night's episode (YES, DUH!!!) and if I would participate in a short survey (well this is Castle we are talking about – so DUH!! YES!!).

Unfortunately I didn't write down all that they asked, but here is what I remembered.

They wanted my demo info (age, sex)

Did I watch the show

Did I watch it live (or DVR, or online – there were many choices)

Do I watch Castle … I plan on watching, I was channel surfing, it was on when I came into the room, etc

How often do I watch Castle (4 times per month, 3 times, 2,1, seldom, never) – They don't know us very well do they, if they gave me an option I would have said, at least 12 times / month – I watch it live then at least two more times per episode.

There was a grid with the 8 co stars of the show where I was to rank their role in the episode from perfect to too much. For Lanie and Captain Montgomery I had to say perfect, because I was afraid that they would mis interpret my intentions – they could have played a larger role / been onscreen longer NOT shorter.

Then came the most troubling question… Ranking the importance of each character to the SERIES. I rated them all as being VERY IMPORTANT to the show. I hope that they are not looking to cutting costs by dropping someone!!

Then there were two free form questions – where it looked like they wanted a one line response

  • What was your favorite part of the episode
  • what problems did you have with the episode

I said that I liked the banter, the character interactions, the secret room / passages, that there were a lot of "quotable" lines in the show between the characters. (I didn't know how long I could type – but I went longer than they had space for)

I didn't have anything to say about problems / dislikes in the episode (I refrained from asking to see "more" of Stana Embarassed)

There might have been more to the survey than that, and they asked if I would be interested to do more surveys for the and of course I said yes!! Strangely they did not ask for my e-mail address. So now I will have to visit ABC/Castle more frequently.

Did anyone else see / participate in this survey.

I tried to take the survey, but I got rejected.  After they asked for my gender and age, it said that "that quota has been filled".  I guess they must only be taking so many surveys for each gender and age group.  I kinda feel bad, I wanted to help!

Same thing happened to me.  I thought maybe I was too old for their liking?  I'm in my 50's?  Anyway, I wrote to ABC to say I loved the episode and couldn't wait for the "first kiss" episode.

I was able to fill out the entire thing (there was a small discussion about this survey on the post-episode discussion thread for 3x10).

I was a little weirded out by being asked the importance of the characters (I also said all were very important…I can't imagine the show without each of them).  I hope that it wasn't about cost-cutting measures or something.

I did not list any problems with the episode…really, it was the perfect mix for me.  As far as the favorite part of the episode, I listed the great Castle/Beckett dynamic in this episode.

Others have said that they have not seen such a survey for other ABC shows recently, so I guess I'm still curious what this is all about…

I'm wondering if the character questions were more for figuring out how much more or less screen time to give a character, back-story etc….  Castle is a solid  hit for ABC, and a pretty steady performer, but perhaps they are thinking about how bump those rating up a bit higher.  Why else have a survey?

I'm also curious as to weither this is a survey that was instigated by ABC or by TPTB over at Castle.  Doesn't ABC do the advertising and marketing of the show?  Someone correct me if I'm wrong.  Maybe the survey is about how to market the show more effectively?

I really hope most of the regular viewers who don't visit forums or anything labeled each character as very important.  The show would falter if any of them weren't around IMO, even Montgomery, Alexis, Martha, Lanie.  Everyone's essential.

I haven't visited the Post Ep 10 thread yet – I want to have the time to read and enjoy in "one sitting" – life keeps getting in the way. I didn't know that others had seen / participated in the survey – I thought I was "reporting" on something new – LMAO!! Me first to the party – NOT!

BTW I'm in that 50's category and was able to complete the survey – must have been there at the right time. This is unlike the facebook survey a month or two ago where they rejected me because I said that I do not spend any time per day on FB/MS or Twitter!

Good point, Leftfield.  This is a much better option than what I was thinking (that TPTB are looking to eliminate a character or two from the show by not extending someone's contract).  This is why I made it clear that I wanted to see more backstory on Lanie and Capt. Montgomery since they seem to get the least screen time.

I'm thinking it was instigated by ABC.  Individual shows rarely do their own, especially through the network's website.  And if they did, I'm sure they had to get ABC's blessing and even let them vet the questions before the survey was posted.

That's what I was worried about too.  Really hope it's more like Leftfield's theory.

I guess it's possible that they could want to get rid of someone but…I used to do these kinds of surveys for NBC all the time, like, over the course of a couple of years about certain shows.  And they had exactly the same type of questions on characters – picture of a character, how well do you like them, rating their storyline, etc.  I think it was just general assessing people's interests on the show, and the interest in the show itself, so I'm hoping it's the similar case here.  I'm not too worried.

Don't like the sound of the survey.

For me, Castle has already been…altered…with an aim of gaining audience shares.

It started with those promos everybody (else) liked so much.

Now – ABC wants to know which characters you like least?

Wonder who they're gunning for.

Cuz believe it, if the network wants to mix it up with the production company, they will whip out these stats and say: See??

That's how it  sometimes goes.

Be careful out there.

LOVE everybody!

They're not asking what characters you like least.

You've got to take a trip to the main Castle page at ABC, if I remember.  By checking the lower, 34-? age group, it said all the sampling was done in that group already also.  Oh well.

As of 2 seconds ago, the survey is still up on the main page:

http://abc.go.com/shows/castle/

But, I'm in the 18-20something demo, which was full… boo.
In any case, I think it's kind of cool that they're asking questions at all.
I'd like to think it's so they can make the show even better. Smile
