Hello fellows,

first of all excuse the crappy english/american writting I do…I am from Germany and don't know it better.

I am a huge Castle-Fan and stick with it since the first broadcast. Before I start with the topic of the topic I wanna tell you what I love so much about the series and especially that I will always love the series independently from the points written below.

Of course there are the amazing characters which are played by also amazing actors who gave these chars significant behaviour which is certainly based on themselves as far as I have seen on the YouTube-Vids from the Conventions (e.g. ComicCon 2010) they went to. The humor is just unbelievable funny, the background-stories are well thought and kept authentic. One of the best things (and as far as I know never seen before) is the real world publication of the books Castle writes in the series, naturally I've read them all (well with Heat Rises I am close to the end so don't spoiler anything!).

To the Topic: Origins

To be honest I'm currently a little bit unhappy about what is happening in the series. This has nothing to do with the ongoing story, but rather with the ordinary and the everyday behavior of the characters. I have this meaning growing inside since the start of the third season and I just wanna share it, not accuse anything to anyone.

There are things that have been worked out at the beginning of the series but simply do not exist any longer. Here some points:

Books: In the first episode there was a book publication party for Stormfall, some episodes later a reading session and on the beginning of season 2 there was also a party for Heat Wave (and of course we will never forget the scene where Beckett sits on the closed toilet seat reading the pre-release when Castle scares the hell out of her wink . Well, at the beginning of season three we barely get information about the release of Naked Heat, the secound Nikki Heat novel. Same thing when Heat Rises came out. Of course the situations on the characters were messy but nothing at all? Especially the books aren't mentioned in any way after the release what brings me to an subitem

Easter Egg with Ryan running around holding Castle books. I don't know exactly when it actually stopped but some time he just didn't carry them any more around. I thought it was funny because no one really mentioned it in the series. The thing with the grafic novel of Derek Storm in the Superhero episode was again funny. I know this season the movie of Heat Wave is coming out and I hope this one will stay a little bit longer the topic.

Poker Nights: I don't need to write so much about them, they are just gone with the wind. I loved the discussion between the novelists about the cases and also the session with the mare, the judge and the cap. There are plenty of possiblities for further table rounds. (Ryan's future wife can join one of them, new captain of course of maybe Alexis – at least Molly Quinn is now 18, actually don't now how old the character is right now – of course she beet'em all.)

Fun Games between Castle and his daughter: I've just seen the episodes were Alexis and Caslte were fighting laser tag and duelling with swords. That was so damn childish and funny.

Castle's Women: Mother, daughter, alexis mum, castles publisher – we had a lot of women with funny stories and embarassing moments for castle, well all of this is now down to mother and daughter (but less funny and less embarassing) now I think.

Recognizing the famous one or at least mention who the hell he is: At the beginning some of the suspects or wittnessess either recognized Castle as an writer or asked who he is because he under all circumstances still wears no badge.

Castle's Bar: He bought a bar! With alcoholics and all that stuff! We never, I repeat, never saw them all sitting together in that bar and celebrating anything or at least share a drink after a heavy case. At some points the bar was mentioned but thats it. But I have to admit I can't be mean that somethings no longer in the series on the fact that it never was on the series wink

I know series like this always have some changes in the line of the time, grow a little bit or a bit more but I also know that Castle isn't like any other series.

Well these are the points I am actually missing on the series. I want to repeat that I still love the show and enjoy the stories, the characters and all of it, but these points were just the things who dragged me into that series.

I can't wait to hear your opinion about these points and if they should get back in the series. Again sorry for the crappy english I write.

Regards,

Will.D.McG.

Welcome to the Forum! I hope you will keep coming back for more.

Your English is not bad. Only a little polishing here and there, and no one would know the difference.

You raise several good points, some of them have been discussed earlier. I will give my thoughts.

Books: You are right, there is less emphasis on things like book launch parties, receptions, or other publicity events. But we did get a book-signing in Episode 1 of this season.

Ryan: We don't see him carrying around Castle's books like in Season one. But he has insights that show he has knowledge of what is in those books.

Poker Nights: The last was in Dead Pool. I don't think we will see Alexis or Capt. Gates joining in, but there will probably be one this season.

Castle/Alexis games: Alexis is growing up. This was partly addressed when she almost sold her Star Wars light sabers to buy a Vespa, but changed her mind.

Castle's Women: I don't mind the contraction here – he is having less to do with other women as he matures.

Recognizing the Famous One: Well, I kinda miss that, too.

The Old Haunt: I think this was discussed last year. I remember that the writers stated they couldn't use the same location again without extra costs. We will have to settle for the occasional mention of it.

I think most of these would naturally fade somewhat as the story line develops, once they have been established as background. As in real life, there are many things that we move away from, and have fond memories of, that we cannot always go back to. We will miss them, but life moves on, as does this story.

First of all, thanks for the welcoming. I have to admit I had to look after the word "polishing" in the dictionary wink

Books: Right, the book-signing I nearly forgot..just watched the entire 4th season again. I guess we can also assume he wasn't in the right mood for any book publishing partys this time.

Ryan:Of course the insight knowledge of Ryan into the books is there but that's not the point of an Easter Egg (at least I guessed it was one). For example I knew once an comic series (unfortunately forgot the name) where you could find an drawn fungus in one pic of every issue, the fun was to find the fungus. That's an Easter Egg to me.

Poker Nights: Great, didn't know that there was planning for another poker game in this season, I am already on assuming the participants. Well Alexis may not be part of it, she has some other troubles around right now, but the Captain I would hope so, think she has a great poker face, at least she had one on 24 as a politican.

Castle/Alexis games: The growing part of Alexis is what I am afraid of, same thing happend on Eureka where Zoe went to college, know she's only in for some guest appearances, I hope this won't happen here when Alexis finally get her commitment.

Recognizing the Famous One: Especially the ways he used it for getting some confessions or informations out of suspects like the Triade-Poker Game where he plays with the russian guys.

Yeah you are right, life movs on and also the show must go on. But especially things like Recognizing the Famous One can't just fall away because these are things you can not influence.

I don't know that they are actually planning a Poker Night. I just think there will probably be one.

I think it just has a lot to do with Alexis is growing-up, "It's not about the books anymore", Castle said "I love you" to Beckett at the end of season 3, Ryan probably finished all the books, the Huant is not a
Permanent set, and fun stuff like poker nights take away from the precious 42 minutes they have in an episode. Do I miss some of it, like poker nights? Yes, but like He-touches-things said, the story and characters have changed over the seasons. It's unreasonable to think they can just continue with the way things were in season 1.

Welcome to the forums William!  You raise a good point generally about some of the "fun" being left behind in the show (fewer poker games, fewer laser tag session with Castle and Alexis) and all I can guess at as to why this is would be because the general tone of the show has gotten slightly more serious.  At the beginning we were learning who these people are on the surface and things like Castle and Alexis fencing each other or Castle playing poker with his writer colleagues introduced us to them and showed them sides of his personality that the police work wouldn't necessarily.  Now that we know him and the nature of his relationship with Alexis, plus the fact that Alexis is growing up, we won't get as much of that.  Plus, Castle and Beckett's developing relationship needs to be shown against the backdrop of the conspirators in her mom's case and the potential threat to both their lives that that poses.

Fortunately, we do get our fun in other ways.  Lanie has become sassier, Beckett still teases Castle here and there, and Martha is always keeping her son on his toes.

Change is inevidable when it comes to a show like Castle.  A primetime dramady has to change and grow.  The stories have to progress and the characters can't get stuck at one point. While many fans love every stage, some go through a period where they don't get the character and/or story.  Season 4 is a time of huge transition and I think we have to give the characters a lil longer to readjust to where they are now.

some points taken here.

I have noticed that the more we go through the series, the more Castle became just-another-detective of the team. The only difference it's that he doesnt wear a gun.
How can you tell in the past eps that he's a famous writer? And not just another crime consultant?
How does he bring his out of the box thinking?

And how's different the intimate book writing session in 4x01 with Castle in a casual checked shirt from the red carpet of Heat Wave with an outstanding Hervé Légér Beckett? He's some sort of indie writer now?

And when does Castle finds the time to write? Being at the precinct 24/7 and writing only at night?

I understand budget cuts, but arent we losing some of the soul of this show?

BTW, before everyone starts someting that I dont want, I really like the show and what our characters have become.

"it's not about the books anymore." "Kate, I love you. I love you, Kate." "Beckett, what do you want?" "You."

Budget cuts haven't got anything to do with anything, who told you there were budget cuts in the first place? You' seem to be making stuff up again.

I don't think we're losing anything, the show is growing, nobody wants a static stale show.

Castle has plenty time to write, we only see the times when he's working – by your way of thinking he mustn't ever eat or pee either 'cause we never see him do that.

I was expecting a reply from you of this kind, Admin!
As always, with the sword in your hand to protect the show, isnt it?

Setting aside poker nights and stay away from Old Haunt location is not about budget?
Does not Martha said that Rick passed every day at the precinct? When has he time to write? Not at the precinct, I gather.

But, again, the show's perfect, and we live in a perfect world. So, this is not the place to adress any issue about the show. Understood.

And, besides, I really dont like the fact that you needed to reply at my post but not any earlier. But you're the admin and you rule this forum. So, I'll retreat!

Hi Bel-riose , do not leave ! I agree with you : I do miss the pocker parties, and the book signature parties with that so charming, elegantly dressed Castle, beautiful women at his toes, etc. too. And YES I am worried about him having (very probably) not enough time, and not being in the mood of writing any more. Gina should show up and say come on, go back to your books, you'r a talented novelist, you just can't give up that way. The way he was dressed for the last book signing was really sad, and his "fans" looking really "limited" was not helping to keep hope in his future as a novelist.

As you say, nobody seems to know who he is any more, and, with the new Captain saying he is a "limited guy" this is just too much ! I really need him to get back some of his previous charm and glory.

To get matured does not mean to be sad and loose interest in the bright side of life [Image Can Not Be Found]

Can anyone state the source of the argument that there are any budget cuts?  Just one will suffice.   Truth be told, there has ALWAYS been a balancing of the budget, but there has been nothing said about budget cuts.  The show is doing well and there is a financial responsibility to stay within their budget, but that does not indicate a budget cut in ANY way.

As for some of the things that were listed as being missed,

Poker games – we only saw a couple of those in the first season, it wasn't something we saw every episode. And if it was something that we saw all the time, the ones that have been signification would lose their significance. They are special to us because they occur once in a while.

Books – We don't see every minute of Castle's day, let alone the WEEK that passes between cases that we get to watch.  For the most part, the cases take about 3-4 days (that we see, to solve).  That doesn't take into account the DAY OFF the detectives get (yes they get at least one a week) nor does it account for the rest of the week when they may not have had a murder to solve.  We don't see a whole week's worth of Castle's time, there is time write.

The story has to change and evolve. NOTHING every stays the exact same, and if it did it would be beyond boring.  To want things back to the way they were in Season 1 & 2 doesn't allow for the growth the characters now have in their work and personal relationship.. things have to change to move forward.

And I'm sorry bel_riose, but I call foul on the tone and disrespect shown to Admin.  Not cool !  It's okay to discuss and voice your opinion, but that was out of line.

If I may share my two cents about the budget:

Does Castle have a budget? Yes, they do, for obvious reasons. How the budget is balanced, though, is a completely different story. Something we might see in one episode that was part of the budget may be changed for something else entirely in another episode. It's not a matter of budget cuts, but rather, budget management, which is a completely different story.

EDIT: docvap, Totally agree with what you said about the budget, I just didn't see it before I made this post.

"How does he bring his out of the box thinking?"

We can tell this by his crazy theories and remarks he makes when building theory. We also know by the cracks he makes to lighten the mood at crime scenes.

Every show works on a budget and Andrew Marlowe has stated that numerous times. No budget cuts have been made to the show, they just work within normal confines of a network tv show.  Unless you can show proof of this by the ABC execs, I suggest you should be careful on making statements that are not based on solid facts.

As far as Castle writing or watching him write, if you pay close attention during the episodes, we will often see him making notes for what we assume would be for his latest book.  It was also addressed in The Dead Pool that Castle tends to wait till the last minute to write and then he writes in a caffeine fed frenzy.  Knowing this, we would not need to see Castle writing during a normal episode.

Poker Nights are probably hard to organized as it is based on the availability of the other writers.  It also has to fit into the particular storyline and over all storyline for the season. I'm sure we will see another one if it fits.

The Old Haunt was an expensive location shoot. Not going back allows the show to do more things with more episodes. This has nothing to due with budget cuts and more to do with using the budget allocated more efficiently in order to continue to make a great show.

I back Admin completely on responding to your post because you stated false information.  It is the "job" of an admin in any forum to address rumors before they get out of hand and hurt whatever show or organization involved.

Castle is just as fun as before but in a different way. He jokes around with the guys more, his comments are more subtle but very funny if you pay attention to them. He's grown up some as any character would given what he has gone through since the start of the show. He is also now handling a teenage daughter with her own more adult issues so he has to be the parent. He has to be the one to guide her and knowing from my own experience as a mom, actions speak louder than words.

As far as the ladies at his toes, He's stated he loves Beckett so why would he want ladies around him as much?  In real life, people usually grow out of the party phase and learn to have fun in other ways.  It gets old I'm sure having people dote on you when you want something more real.  He's found it now with the precinct and is now finding different ways to have fun.

We are only 4 episodes in to the season so far people.  Give the storylines a chance to develop. Trust that Marlowe and the brilliant writers on the show.  They will deliver.  They have every single time so just enjoy the ride.

ok world,

maybe it's my bad english. but I'm constantly misunderstood by the people on this forum.
I love Castle, I love the actors, I love the writers, and I love the story.
and I watch Castle from flowers from your grave and I remember anything.

but I love 100%, every single minute of this show? no. Like I dont for Chuck, NCIS, Big Bang Theory, Firefly or the other shows I watch.

The thing I hate about this forum, is that everytime that candidly I suggest "I didnt like Nathan's shirt in last night ep" there's plenty of overreactions like everybody here is terrified by the idea of something wrong with the show that will instantanly distract 1million viewers from it and causing the show cancellation and a life of hopelessness for Stana and Nathan.

And our Admin, as much as I like her and as much I offered her my help sometimes, is among them.

No budget cuts, only budget administration? Ok, if it makes all the difference in the world, ok, my fault.

But some things I used to like about this show are missing.
There's something else that I like more, in replacement? Yes.
Do I like all the grow uo thing? Maybe. Castle and Beckett arent real persons, they are mere characters so I like to watch the show and have fun, not to be worried for their fictional life.
I used to like red carpets, poker games, ferraris and all the displaying rich man things.
And now I like the more relaxed relationship between Castle and Beckett and the way they love each other.

I just hope, childish, for a win-win situation. That's really all I concern.

PS: I dont want for all the gold in the world, to quit this forum. I have fun reading you all, even if I'm unlucky actually writing in it.

"it's not about the books anymore." "Kate, I love you. I love you, Kate." "Beckett, what do you want?" "You."
