well, Jordan Shaw wears pencil skirts and it seems to work for her…and yes, I totally noticed the lack of heels in Rise. It was a good choice to film it that way. It's almost if Kate doesn't have the strength and energy to worry about putting on appearances and appearing stronger.
She probably just doesn't like them… but of course I have to over think things [Image Can Not Be Found] It could be that pencil skirts are very limiting and almost confining. It can be hard even going up large stairs in them much less running or anything. Beckett is very independent as we know and doesn't like to be confined or restrained. Pants give her the freedom to move and bend where and when she needs to. Also from a producer's view I bet it just helps make a "wow" moment in the episodes where she does bust out a dress. Beckett is girly and feminie, but she's also got quite a bit of tom boy in there. When she glams up in an episode it makes more of an impact with the audience because she doesn't do that every day.
Beckett may not wear skirts to work also because she's a woman in a man's world. To keep pace with all the guys she has to be a little bit smarter, faster, stronger and tougher and that's not easy to do wearing a pencil skirt. It also helps her blend in and let her be known for her work, not for being the only detective who wears a skirt.

OfflineI really like the heels, and I've run a lot in heels (chasing after busses LOL), so it is possible and for a short run (under 5 minutes) not less comfortable than running in Nikes. In general I find her wardrobe pretty down-to-earth and practical. The show itself has so many "they would never ever do that in real life"-moments I really don't care wether her heels are unrealistic or not
And they do make her bigger than Ryan and Esposito… it may be unintentional, but who knows.
What I like best about her is that she is feminine, very sexy, but without showing off her chest or legs all the time. She is usually pretty "covered". I don't like shows where the women play lawyers or detectives and have cleavages as deep as the Mariana Trench. She doesn't need that. And that amazes me. And then, when she wears a dress like in "Lucky stiff", I was so stunned I had no idea what she was talking about with the drug dealer (and Castle obviously had some brain dysfunction, too)
I love her long, curly hair. The short hair was okay, but the long hair is so much better. And yes, she did wear a bit too much makeup in season 2.

Uh I totally agree with the "cover em' up" mentality! Why do women have to show everything to be pretty? That is awesome about Beckett's character! There is enough left to the imagination and she doesn't come off as slutty. In a man's world it's easy for women to come off as itchy with a B or slutty depending on how they are dressed. Good comment!

I have to correct myself (I am still catching up on seasons 1 and 2). Her hair also looked awesome near the end of season two, when it was straight, wow, she looked mid-twenties and very very pretty!
I agree with you here. That style was sexy and very trendy for a woman her age. My other favorite style was actually her hair in the pilot – the really short hair. Professional, but not as sexy.

OfflineThere are many views re Beckette's look this year. While I love her hair this season I really don't like her clothes. Yes, I get that they may be trying to make her look more professional. Yes, I get that she may be dressing more conservatively because she isn't looking for a relationship. Yes, she is a beautiful woman and would look good wearing a flour sack….BUT, I miss her looking more feminine from time to time in her clothing. But that is just my own opinion. OfflineI have two thoughts on Beckett's look thus far in Season 4:
1) She was shot, and spent a lot of time in recovery, and I believe the choice in clothes is to continue with the "frail" post trauma look (therefore a slightly over-sized fitting)
2) Iron "get me a confession so I look good" Gates. She has brought a certain "discipline" to the precinct because of her demeanor and how she dresses. I know that when I have been scheduled for a meeting that I perceived to be "confrontational" ie – performance review time, I dress up more and will pick the "power tie" over one of my Mickey Mouse (literally) day to day ties. With Gates running the show, Beckett has spent more time in "suit like" outfits than not, because Gates wears them like she means it.

OfflineI saw a link talking about the military jacket Beckett wore in Demons and thought it was so funny how they dress her in clothes that are generally much to rich for a cop's salary. I know she doesn't have A LOT of expenses other than het apartment, but just that place costs a pretty penny. I almost wish they would dress her in clothes from stores like J Crew, Banana Republic, Anthropology, and Gap. These are more reasonable stores. Fans love Beckett's looks at it's much more likely that a viewer can go out and buy a $100 blazer from J Crew than a $250 Burberry blazer

I take your point, but they are trying for a particular look/image rather than trying to be real – in the same way as the police procedures aren't right, nor the law or forensics etc. And even if we buy some of this stuff, we sure aren't going to look like her wearing it. (Or at least i'm not.)
None of the shows dress or house their characters in places that real people carrying on the relevant job could afford. The characters from Friends lived in apartments that 100% of their aggregate gross salaries wouldn't rent. The male cops from myriad shows wear $2k Armani suits. Beckett's digs would run north of $1 million to buy (or more) and probably close to her take home pay to rent. In Season 1, some of her shirts were the kind of things that a regular cop might afford, but that was about it. At least two of her coats from S. 1 i've seen for sale at $3-4k and several of the leather jackets are near that. And since s.2 started the cost of the clothing has climbed steadily.
Good luck finding a handkerchief at Burberry for $250. (Most of the blazers there push $1k and the coats are more).

OfflineI understand they are going for a certain "look" but I've done my fair share of shopping and it would not be that hard to find quality clothes from very repedible stores that cost a third of the price. It's not as if she is playing the part of Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl. It's just an observation especially since there are many sites online that are dedicated to Becketts woredrobe.

OfflineI suspect the woman could make a burlap bag look good, so they don't have to dress her in the top end stuff to make her attractive. [Though they did find some particularly ugly things to put on her back in season 3.] And yes, you can find quality, classy clothes for a lot less (no one really needs jeans that cost $200 do they?) but i cannot think of many shows where any of the women (no matter what their economic bracket is supposed to be) wear clothes or shoes that fit their jobs – either functionally or economically. Most of the guys are equally expensively tailored. It's entertainment and fantasy – and i like to look at pretty things, as do most of us. Why would we demand reality in this part of the show, when we seem to live with the unreality in most of the rest of it? I don't really understand why Beckett should be dressed from stores that the fans who post on the websites you mention can afford to patronize. I can afford to buy the stuff they have her wear and i own a couple of things by the same designers. But that isn't going to make me look like her (don't i wish it did). Frankly, i find it more fun trying to figure out who she's wearing (and giggling over the unreality of the cost vs her job) than anything else.

OfflineI completely own up to wearing designer, $150-$180, jeans because my mom mistakenly bought me a pair of Citezens of Humanity jeans when I was 15 and once you pop you can't stop. They fit better, they last longer, and they are as soft as a baby blanket. Luckily Gap reworked their jeans and they also fit great and those are half the price. I completely understand the fantasy/entertainment factor, it's just one of those things that makes me laugh…as much as some of the procedural mishaps, which make my chuckle too.

that's a good point and I've also noticed that. But especially the suit she wore in the last episode made her look extremely fragile. If you are a very slender person clothes that aren't skin tight make you look even more slender, it's strange, but that's why I prefer jeans and tight tops on Kate. She often looks lost in her more official clothes but that may be intentional due to her trauma (as jrabbit pointed out, too). It's the same with the bun, I don't like it on her, she looks even smaller and older with it. I really wonder if in one episode they'll give her a pony tail.
I wouldn't want her to wear Gap. I don't want IKEA to decorate her apartment
. It is funny when you can say "hey, I have that same shower curtain!!!" but I prefer thinking wow… I want that kitchen island!!!! Besides, we don't know how much money she really has. Her mother was a lawyer, and Castle once said that he thinks she came from a "good" home, so her mother probably left her some money when she died or maybe her father bought her apartment for her.
