I will go out on a limb and guess that Beckett attended University. And she completed her 4 year degree putting her around age 21 before joining the police force.
* Did she attend in New York and live at home?
* Did the murder happen during a break (Christmas, Spring or Summer) so she was at home when the murder happend?
That's all I have for now.
We know that Beckett was definitely home at the time of her mother's murder. As I vaguely recall, she was with her father waiting for her mother to join them out on the town for dinner, but she never showed, and then going home afterwards, only to be met by an NYPD detective with the bad news![]()
I don't know enough about where she lived. All we do know is that the apartment that she had that was blown up was not her first. She did mention to Castle her first apartment was on in an apartment on top of a restuarant that made everything smell like chicken wings… but I do not know when she lived there.
Wow, we are getting some good timelines for Kate' past.
I just want to throw a wrench into things and say that we don't know she was living at home when the murder happened. Her dad could have met her after class and they went to the restaraunt and then her mom was suppost to come meet them there. Maybe they decided that her mom went home instead, that's why she didn't show up, so that is why they went to her dad's home together after dinner.
We do know from Sucker Punch that her dad lives close enough to come into town for a visit if he wants to. If he still lives in the same house as 10 years ago is situation could work too.

Wow, that's new to me too.
About the timeline: the one year what she spent with treatment (to cope with her mother's death) need not necessary be an extra year in her career, more probably she attended the pshrink beside her job.

It's not necessary to be under one roof with someone who want to overcome the alcohol, because it depends mainly on his/her own will. But if there is someone to whom you can show your strength or before whom you do not want to be ashamed, this could help a lot. There are no general solution, it mostly depends on the habit and personality of the involved person.

OfflineYep, she didn't have to necessarily be with him all the time. If he got into the habit out of depression from his wife dying, then what he would really need is a good support system. Long as he had stable communication with Beckett and they visited on a regular basis, he could possibly overcome the alcoholism without Beckett living with him. Of course, it obviously comes down to him wanting to get out of it, though, and I'm sure that Beckett helped him as much as she possibly could, while still living her life.

OfflineI just re-watched "A Chill Goes Through Her Veins" and this is where a some of the early timeline comes from. I took notes
After the first glimpse of the crime scene we see Beckett waking up and… we see a picture of Beckett's mom and dad (same actor as s2 – Sucker Punch).
–> The victim died 5 years ago (from spring 2009) and her husband was killed a year ago. Detective Sloan worked the missing persons case of the of the victim back then and "he was before my time" said Beckett.
Beckett tells Castle her story…
Mom, Dad and I were to go out to dinner together and mom was to meet us at the restarant
We waited for her for two hours then returned home
Detective Ragland worked the case, "they" found the body, she had been stabbed – was not a robbery or sexual assault and the murder was attributed to gang violence.
Dad took the death hard
–> Dad has been sober now for 5 years
So Beckett has been in the police force less than 5 years ("before my time") and Beckett's mom's murder happened more than 5 years ago.

OfflineBeckett's trip to Russia "the summer between her Junior and Senior year" that she brings up in DEEP may have been in high school. We're not talking Junior Year Abroad program that you'd see in college, she said "summer" – something more likely to happen in high school.
I just looked up Stuyvesant High, an incredible high school, not your run of the mill NYC public school. This school is one of NY State's gifted and talented schools. It has admission requirements and is very proactive at giving kids experiences outside what they could find in other schools in the city. It's as close as you can get to elite private but still be public. Check it out… http://stuy.enschool.org/ . It is very likely that a high school like this would offer travel opportunities like this.
The reason I bring it up is that if this trip was in high school, then we can more easily assume that her descent into the job came directly after her mother's murder when she was in college (age 19) and possibly changed majors, since we wouldn't have to explain a trip to Russia when she was 20-21 years old.

OfflineI pretty much assumed she went to Kiev in high school, because of what Alexis said about the study abroad program she was looking at (that would have happened in high school.)
I went to a high school which had a ton of exchange students, going in both directions, all over the world. If she was at Stuy, it would be totally plausible, so ITA.

OfflineHoly cow! I am truely amazed at all of this. Sometimes I take for granted the "in front of me" storytelling, as to where I don't think about things too deeply, but this just makes her character SO much more interesting. I would love to know her timeline.
Can we refer to any Nikki Heat books for referencing since it's very parallel??
Castle: Yes, Beckett? Either there's a dead body or you just wanna hear my sultry voice.

OfflineAlthough I have watched Castle from May 2010 and watched all the episodes in all 3 seasons and enjoyed them, I became a dedicated fan of it and started re-watching episodes only after that awesome season 3 finale, which took my breath away.
I've been trying to determine how old Kate Beckett is and how long she was working as a cop. So in S02E13, she says or Raglin (I am not sure about spelling) says her mom has been dead for 12 years. So since she became a cop after her mom passed away, she has been a cop for around 10 years is it – since it takes time to complete the training course at the academy? Or did she not join the academy right after her mom died?
I know in some episode she made reference to 'it being before her time' when something was 5 years ago but could it mean she was not at that station and was somewhere else in training?
Anyway, this thread had some great information and it was really interesting.
Thank you.

OfflineAccording to Knockdown, Johanna Beckett was murdered on January 9, 1999. A tweet of Terri Miller's says Kate was 19 at the time, so she was definitely in college. This means she was born in 1980 (or 1979 and she hadn't yet had her birthday when her mom was killed) and that she's in her early thirties when she meets Castle.
Working backwards, we figure the following:
- She graduates at 21 in 2000 or 2001
- Enters the police academy that summer or fall and graduates in early 2001 or 2002
- She spends three years as a beat cop, until 2004 or 2005, obsessed with solving her mom's murder. During this time she meets Captain Montgomery and he mentors her with an idea towards her becoming a detective.
- Captain Montgomery makes her a detective at the 12th and probably helps her realize she has to put it behind her for the sake of her career and, we now know, to keep her away from the case. She spends a year putting it behind her until 2005 or 2006 and works for five years until she meets Castle.

I think that just means "before my time" at the 12th. She was a beat cop first, and training.

This is a nice summary, thanks.
So in the United States, does the training at the police academy take less than a year?
Ok, so in that case, it makes sense that she finished whatever she was studying at university and then went to the academy without switching majors in the middle (presumably, the academy doesn't require any specific major for someone wishing to be a police officer)
I know we haven't visited this thread for a long time. Its just that re-watching old episodes has re-ignited my curiosity for Beckett's past.

OfflineYen- it only takes one year to complete the academy and while having a college degree is desired, it is not usually necessary when you get hired. My dad only had his Asociates when he was hired. Then once you are out of the academy there is a 6-12 month probation/training period. This is usually included as time spent as a beat cop.
It is very likely that Beckett was a beat cop stationed at the 12th, especially if that's where she met Montgomery.
