I apologize if this has already been discussed.  I tried searching and didn't come up with anything, so here goes.

Did anyone else notice that Castle's real name – Richard Rodgers – is the same as Richard Rodgers of Rodgers and Hammerstein?  For those not familiar with musicals, they were a very famous and successful songwriting team for musicals in the 20th century (musicals like Oklahoma, Carousel, South Pacific, to name just a few).  We know Martha performed on Broadway, right?  And in the first episode when she brings her new boy toy home from the book release party, she is singing "I'm just a girl who can't say no" from Oklahoma.  [Image Can Not Be Found]

I bet there are more allusions like that.  Anyone else notice anything?

Yes! And then, when I was in NYC about a month ago and was on Broadway, I saw the Richard Rodgers Theatre sign and was like OMG YES! So far I haven't noticed anything else, though. But now I'm curious.

Hmm… that's interesting. I've always been a musical fan, and especially a fan of R&H, but I never even noticed that.

Perhaps Martha, being a Broadway actress, purposely named her son Richard after Richard Rodgers, since her last name was Rodgers. But other than that, I haven't noticed anything else. Something to keep an eye out for in my summer rewatch.

That's a definite possibility.  Never thought of that.  Being an R&H fan, I did notice the name connection, but that idea never occured to me.

There's a musical called "Tick…Tick..Boom!" by Jonathan Larson, the guy who wrote Rent.

Given that there's an ep called "Tick..Tick…Tick…" followed by "Boom!"  in season 2, I'd be shocked if it wasn't a nod to Jonathan Larson die-hard fans, because you have to be a die-hard fan to know that show.  Although if you're a Renthead, I highly recommend you check it out.  It was produced post-humously and it's semi-autobiographical.

Yes, that's true!  And actually, I was searching the other day for some audition music for a play that's coming up and I noticed that several episodes were named after Broadway plays.  Lucky Stiff was one, Tick..tick..boom was another.  I love that I find all these Castle tie-ins everywhere I look.  [Image Can Not Be Found]

This was the first thing I thought of when he said his real name. With Martha being in the theater it made perfect sense for her to name her son after Richard Rodgers of Rodgers and Hammerstein. When they had that scene my mind immediately went back to the premiere and Martha singing I'm Just a Girl Who Can't Say No from Oklahoma. That's my favorite musical of all time so I was singing right along with her.

I like how the show has these ribbons running through them and that the wirters don't seem to forget what has happened before on the show.

LOL!  I forgot about that!  Hysterical!  I wonder if that's also why Castle changed his name legally: he got sick of people asking him if he was gonna write a musical when he'd introduce himself as a writer!  Still makes you wonder why he chose the surname "Castle"?

To me, "Castle" is a much stronger name than "Rogers". As another "Richard", I'm glad he kept it.

Castle does have a certain coolness about it, too.  Like when he answers his cell phone and Beckett is calling, Castle is much more fun name to play with then Rodgers.

im pretty big on musicals myself especially the music aspect of it (excellent music in all those shows)

with the summer hiatus going on and nothing new its nice to take a break from watching the episodes see something else and them come back and notice things you didnt notice before.

it would be interesting to ask either terri or andrew why they chose the last name of "castle" as well when they did the original pilot.
