Castle Dialogue

As I watch the rebroadcast of the season I am struck by the amount of witty and enlightening  dialogue that is delivered so quickly that its content is lost or not able to be fully appreciated. There are often little gems of character development or info that give depth and meaning to what will surely be a developing relationship between Castle and Beckett; the writers have purposefully thrown it in the script but I fear time constraints or whatever is keeping much of it from making an impression without captions or even a 2nd or 3rd viewing.

Certainly Nathan's character is partially defined by his witty replies and quick, creative thinking and the go-go crime solving NYPD wouldn't hem and haw either. Still, I think involvement and interest in the show would benenfit from a bit of a slower delivery so some of the bon mots might shine.

Example : Becket''s comment in Ep.1 - ”is this a Mamet play” and Castle remembering that she reads plays. Good insight into another side of Kate – a creative and literary appreciation that would certainly tie them together. Then in Ep. 2 – their conversation about Castle nannying Alexis – his admission those were some of the best days of his life – Kate's dawning awareness of his complexity and admiration of who he really is – then his reversion to the playboy persona he likes to display by replying he was between marriages and thus it was a good time to meet moms in the park.

Both were fine writing, crafted to reveal a new layer but I didn't fully appreciate them until I went back and rewatched, listened more devotedly, or used captions. Just saying…love the show, love Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic and what they are doing with their characters - along with Sullivan and Quinn – and really would like to see it hang around a while.

I think the keyword here is "subtle". Although the fast pace dialog and witty banter presents the reverse impression. Many, many facets of the character's actions and snippets of dialog reveal so much… It's really good writing that you really don't notice unless you really pay attention. It works on so many levels.

Their barbs are hilarious but juicy tidbits are dropped throughout the ten episodes and if you want to you can begin to piece together what are definitely fully structured characters…

I totally agree, the writing on Castle is so fantastic and I love catching the little comments.  The other thing that is masterful, are the little looks that Castle and Beckett give as reactions when some of these lines are delivered.  Whether it is a sly smile as she is turning her head, or the change in his gaze as he moves from joking to serious, it all just works.

You're absolutely right, hanh…those subtle facial expressions just make the delivery of those lines. Nathan said that he does improvise and throw a few of those random comedic lines in there…I wonder how much of them are from the splendid writers and which are the actors'?

Although there are many scenes like this, the one that comes to mind is the interrogation scene (bunt key guy) is being interviewed by Castle and Beckett. He’s being evasive and smug when answering her questions. Castle is amused by it, but Beckett just loses it. She jams the table up against the suspect and gets right up in his face with a no nonsense attitude.

Castle’s amused look quickly turns to surprise and then admiration. Unlike the suspect, who eloquently states that “smart fish don’t bite” Castle is a goner, hook, line and sinker. He doesn’t say a word, but his reaction is priceless. He’s totally taken with her…. even if he doesn’t realize it yet. Laugh
