The Mentalist should be compared to Psych instead. Psych is the sillier version.

Love the blog on the comparing the two characters.    I feel that the Mentalist has a darker over tone (under tone). Castle is laugh out loud and a good show to escape from the day to day grind.  That is why it works and that is why it works on Monday.  It does not take itself too seriously.  Mentalist character is expected to help solve the mystery.  Where as Castle is just there to help his book research.  Beckett and her detectives have the real job to solve the crime.  ROFLWave
