Hello,

I am new to the board and just started watching the show this season.  Caught it one week by chance and was hooked so watched all previous episodes, including season 1, the next day online…  I was wondering if something was ever explained, I haven't see it but maybe missed it……

I am assuming that Castle was Martha's maiden name?  She has been married a few times at least as they mentioned that her last husband took all her money and that is why she lives with Richard and Alexis now… but have they ever said if Castle is a pen name or maybe his father's name?   My understanding was that Richard doesn't know his father, although I don't think they have actually come right out and said that — only that Martha had ….. several men in and out of her life as Richard was growing up.

Probably a stupid question but I was just wondering ….

Interesting question, I don't think it's been addressed but I wouldn't think it was a pen name because Alexis has it too. I would assume it's a family name from one of Martha's previous marriages.

Hi solemnheart! Welcome to the boards! Wave

It's not a stupid question, I'm wondering the same thing.

We've heard Ryan and/or Esposito call Castle's mom "Mrs. R", implying that she's still Martha Rodgers. Not sure where "Castle" came from, but I'm guessing it's his legal name since Beckett was reading his criminal record in the pilot. He could've changed his name, or just adopted that one for writing, but in either case, it's his name now and has been for a while. Not sure if we've heard it said out loud, but I'm pretty sure Alexis' last name is Castle too.

I'm also a bit curious as to where it came from… Hopefully we'll get some more answers later this season ;)

Hi solemheart and welcome,

OK I think that Castle would have been Martha's surname when she had Rick but Rogers would be her husband's surname as as he obviously didn't adopt Rick he kept Castle as his surname.

Let me tell you something about crazy people. The sex is unbelievable.

Ah, thank you!!  I was so about to start this thread.  This last episode (2×08) brought up this question for me big time.

Martha uses the name Rodgers- is this her maiden name or one of her married names?  I thought it was her most recent husband's name, but then she is using that name on 'MyFace.'   Since her old school friends are finding her, it MUST be her maiden name.  It's not likely a stage name for that reason, too.  It stands to reason that since she is an actress she would have kept her original name and not changed it throughout her marriages.  Ok, so then where did the name Castle come from?

I thought about the pen name idea, too, but again Alexis uses the name Castle as well, so that's not a fit.

If Martha doesn't know who Rick's father is, then it's unlikely that his name came from his actual father.  And seeing how she says he never had a father figure, it doesn't sound like any of her boyfriends/husbands ever stuck around long enough to adopt him, sooooo…

Unless perhaps Martha was married to a guy named Castle at the time she had Rick and she gave him her married name at the time.  Guess I'm gonna go with that theory for now.  Yeah.

Technically, Martha could have been married to a guy named Castle, and still not have known who Rick's father was. No one said she was a saint. So she gave her son her husband's name for lack of a different name to give him. It probably woud have been rather conspicuous to name him Rogers if she were married to a man named Castle. It's also quite likely that Martha, being a professional actress with an established reputation in her own name, never took any husband's name and has always been Rogers. After the divorce (which may or may not have had something to do with Rick's paternity), she opted to leave his name alone.

And the theories continue …

no body has brought up the possibility that "Rodgers" is a stage nmae for Martha. Particularly with rodgers being so well thought of on the stage i.e. Richard Rodgers. Come to think of it that may be why Rick is named Richard, in homage to Richard Rodgers.

True, but go back to what GreenyJess said:

"but then she is using that name [Rodgers] on 'MyFace.'   Since her old school friends are finding her, it MUST be her maiden name.  It's not likely a stage name for that reason, too.  It stands to reason that since she is an actress she would have kept her original name and not changed it throughout her marriages."

It really is a mystery… I'm curious if it'll be addressed this season Read

Maybe Castle's name is like a Tootsie Roll Pop… The world may never know. (P.S.: I'm refering to the older Tootsie Roll Pop commercials when the kid is trying to find out how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop.)

Haha. I've seen those commericals! I love tootsie pops.

And yes, I dunno if we'll ever find out! :P

That's actually an interesting thought! I always kind of wondered about the name's origin, but hadn't put that much thought into it.

I think it will be interesting if the writers explore Castle and his feelings about his father. It appears in past episodes when his father is mentioned Castle & his mother have no idea who it is, or at least she is telling him this his entire life. I wonder what his feelings are about his father and if he will share this with Beckett in the future. Would be neat if the writers had a case about a father and son trying to ovwercome differences and one is murdered  and how this effects Castle wanting to know who his father was or try to find him, maybe he has and he comments on that or that he is upset with his Mom that she never let him know his father or that he would like to just act like he never existed. Could be some interesting storylines about his last name, or even Alexis wanting to know about her health history.

I think Castle not knowing who his father is adds so much to who he is today. (Just a quick thought to throw in!)

I wonder if they would ever incorporate his father coming into the picture.

According to Nathan's tweet we're going to hear about Castle's middle name in the following episodes (I'm guessing after the 18th). Bounce2

OK Castle, but it's accompany and observe, and not participate and annoy, got it?

This is one little detail that's been annoying me, Castle's last name. I was very interesting to note, right after Suicide Squeeze aired, WriteRCastle tweeted Alexis Family tree, and Martha's maiden name is Rogers. But, when Montgomery was complimenting Castle, and saying he had to have some "cop" in his family tree, Castle answers, "No, the Castles are primarily charlatans and circus folk." (paraphrased.)

for sake of less confusion, he might have been referring to the Rogers clan as *the Castles*. But I would really love a little light shed on this topic.

My take:

Castle is Martha's real last name, maiden name probably. I bet Martha Rogers is her stage name because Martha Castle isn't very neutral. It kind of sounds like it should belong to one of the puppets on Sesame Street. Laugh

A lot of people change their names in the acting world, John Wayne's real name was Marion Morrison. Martin Sheen's real name is Ramon Estevez and his son is Emilio Estevez. So it is possible that Martha chose to give her son her real name Castle instead of her stage name. Richard Rogers doesn't doesn't ring as well as Richard Castle.

Waaaay back when this show first started, I had toyed around with a brief not-really crossover idea with Dirty Dancing, for the soul purpose of using it as a backstory.  As the series went on, I mostly ditched it, but since the story surrounding Castle's father is so up in the air I might revisit it just for fun.

Awww…I like Richard Rogers just fine.

But I also like the Sound of Music. So maybe it's just me.

But if that were true, wouldn't Alexis be Alexis Rogers?  When an author uses a pen name, they still go by their real name.

That's what I was thinking too, Lady Brenlis.  I think that there was a guy surnamed Castle in Martha's life right around when she had Ricky.  I was thinking about the Cubs beat writer George Castle (hey, he's a writer, it may very well be possible!!) being Ricky's dad (and that explains the baseball connection in The Suicide Squeeze!!).

But hey, any mention of my beloved Cubbies would make me a very, very happy guy.  Squee. Bounce
