I'm rereading "Naked Heat" and something just occurred to me.

Gonna put it in spoiler brackets just in case:

How did Jess Ripton even know that Cassidy Towne was writing a book that would reveal that Jess Ripton had actually murdered Soleil Gray's boyfriend.  No one but her publisher knew what the book was going to be about, and NO ONE knew what the final chapter was. So how did Ripton get tipped off enough that he had to basically start a murder spree to cover his tracks?

If I recall, it was Esteban Padilla that tried to shakedown Ripton, which I think spiraled back to Derek and then onto Cassidy or from Cassidy to Derek.
