LOL! I was at that Comic Con panel. Not sure which cracked me up more, Nathan's salacious reading or Stana almost dying of embarrassment as he read it. Bounce2

I know. I wish I could claim to have been a mega-fan and made the trip just to be there, but it was pure chance. I usually go to either Comic Con or Gen Con about once every four years and this time we met up with two old college friends I hadn't seen in years, one of whom was a massive Whedon/Firefly fan and insisted we go see Nathan and Co.

I'd seen neither Firefly nor Castle at that point so it was one heck of an introduction. I'm still hooked. Love

I've just read all three books in fairly quick succession. I read Heat Wave first followed by Heat Rises and then Naked Heat(these were the order they arrived when I bought them). I just finished Naked Heat two days ago. Shakespeare they're not but considering I don't read novels at all(these are the first I've read in over ten years) I enjoyed the fact that they're intense but light reading that were easy to read and easy to follow. I found that I didn't want to put them down as they were really engaging. I think the books would be easy enough to follow for someone not familiar with Castle but there isn't a lot of character development in the first few chapters of Heat Wave that perhaps you would find in other novels. I really liked all three but Heat Rises was definitely the best with the story line being a little more intense and the relationship between Rook and Heat more developed. I really like the relationship between Rook and Heat and can easily picture it as Castle and Beckett when they finally get their act together, although whether Beckett would ever be as open with Castle as Heat is with Rook remains to be seen, but I guess that's one of the reasons she's going through therapy. I'm really looking forward to the fourth book whenever that may be, possibly this year I hope as there seems to be one released for each season so farBounce2

From all the three books, I liked "Heat Rises" best. It has the most evolved plot and the characters are in my mind not solely inspired by Rick's buddy's as the 12th but take on a life of their own. They become more fleshed out, especially Nikki and Rook and their partnership/relationship. In the way in which they interact with each other they are at this point quite different from Rick and Kate, they actually talk and communicate and it brings them closer together. To me it is developing its independent dynamic from the series. Obviously, there are still scenes, information, characters that hark back to many Castle episodes but in spite of that, in this last book I became really engaged in the story for the story's sake and for the characters' sake.

I heard  "heat rises" was the best, and i think you are agree with that.

what do you think about "naked heat"? i think there are more informations and scenes related to Castle.

If I remember correctly, it reads more like a Castle episode. It's witty and fun. The plot is nothing to bite your teeth into but it is definitely a fun read. And, yes, it has many moments, call-backs to Castle episodes.

Terri Miller tweeted that there will indeed be one released this year. I imagine it'll likely be released to coincide with the beginning of the new season, much as Heat Rises was this year.

I finished Heat Rises last night. After reading all three within a week, I now miss Nikki and Rook! :( It'll be a long wait until the next one! Maybe I'll read them again in the summer to get me through the hiatus (show and books!).

I agree. I really like the relationship between Rook and Heat in the novels. It would rock if Castle/Beckett could capture some of that on screen. It has all the elements of eternal URST with them together. That would be fun.

I enjoyed all three novels.  I read all manner of things – from Austen to Tolkein to Christie to Hardy.  I love to read things that teach me something new so my mysteries are more on the historical end.  I've read Patterson, Cannell, and I"ve started a Connelly but they set there stories in present day (California mostly) and that's just not interesting to me. I can get that stuff on the news. What I enjoyed most about the Castle novels was the ability of the author to inject a bit of fun into the story.  It truly seems as if Castle's charm and sense of fun comes through in his writing.  And as someone said above, the further into the Castle/Beckett story we get, the better the character of Nikki Heat is understood by the author and is portrayed with more depth.  The books are getting longer too as Castle has more to say.

What I find the most fun is reading the books with the mindset of Castle the author in mind.  Whoever is  …  ahem… typing for Castle is a master at getting into the mindset of the character, writing "in character", writing from his perspective, using his experiences. I like to try and tease out where it was in the series that he was writing that particular section of the book.  Not just the case that inspired the scene in the book, but also where he may have gotten the inspiration to put Nikki and Rook into the situations they face.  We had a conversation going awhile ago about some of those instances in this thread,  http://castletv.net/forums/cas…..E2%80%A6  .  Take a look.

Laugh Waldkind, I was reading Heat Rises at the hairdresser the other day, and I didn't think to remove the cover. Everyone got so excited because it was Richard Castle on the back of the book. You are right, they first wanted to know about the front cover as it looked a bit steamy. This naturally got us talking about all things Castle. I didn't only feel good because my hair looked better, but because I have met a few more Castle fans. The book is now doing the rounds at the local hairdresser.

In a few episodes we see Ryan walking with a copy of a Castle book under his arm. I would love for him to tease our DD more, especially as the books have some really steamy scenes in them, and are obviously a wishlist item that richard Castle wants to happen.

In general, those books are a huge promo for the Caskett relationship. They scream "see Kate, this could be us, we'd work great together and the sex would be awesome" Laugh Rook is the perfect boyfriend. Whenever I read (and enjoy) scenes with Rook and Nikki I laugh inwardly because I'm thinking "Oh Castle…"

I hate the covers, though! They make the books look like a cheap bodice ripper. When I read them on the bus I leave the covers at home!

They did a fair amount of teasing Castle and Beckett both in the second season when Heat Wave came out.  I think the "newness" of the situation wore off with the second and third books, so at least the team at the precinct don't seem to find it worth teasing about anymore.  Of course, Heat Rises came out after Beckett was shot but before she came back.  I assume she got a copy and read it when she was recovering at her Dad's cabin.  I wonder how many people besides Beckett know what Castle was saying with the dedication. Smile

A line Rook said to Heat in Naked Heat that jumped out at me as oh so very Castle was "It's win-win. No, it's better than win-win. It's me-you."  Has he ever said that to Beckett in the show?

Something just occurred to me and I am most likely slow on the uptake here, so forgive me: Is it just me or are there chess words flying around in Castle. "Rook" is a chess figure, right? And so is a pawn? So, we have a mention of chess figures for the "real" Beckett in the show (my assumption that Mr. Smith meant her when he said pawn) and the fictional Rick "Rook". I wonder if there are any more…

Black Pawn is Castle's publishing house.  Gina Griffin and Captain Gates – both names have heraldry or "castle" connotations… As you said, Rook as Castle's alter ego and Castle as the well=placed pawn.

Especially as the "castle" is also known as the "rook". Could he have been any more obvious?

wish4always:

that is a great story!!! and a great hairdresser!

I didn't catch the chess reference, but I was going to look up the word "Rook" because Nikki said something in the books about his name. I always saw the rook as the protector of the king, they can swap places, and I've always kept my rook close to my king.

I must say that for a non-native speaker the books are not easy to read. First, there is a lot of police slang that I simply don't know and a lot of abbreviations (which I find quite annoying BTW). Second, I find that I have to look up quite some words which hasn't happened to me in ages. I consider buying the books again when they come out in German this spring because I'm pretty sure that some of the dialogue was completely lost on me.

I'd love if they'd mention the books more in the show. I was almost shocked when I read that Nikki's mother was also murdered. If I were Kate, I wouldn't want millions of readers to know about that. I wonder if Castle asked/asks her, what aspects of her real life he can include in the books.

Still haven't finished Naked Heat because of a sick child but I'm such a Nikki/Rook shipper Love. The poor guy is so in love with her. What did Gina think when she read that book?? And speaking of Gina – my heart went out to Kate when I read the acknowledgments in which he thanks Gina for staying on top of him for the summer… yuck.

And "Nikki Heat" IS a stripper name!
