Beckett:Oh,I was just trying to avoid the paperwork.

Beckett:Beckett.

Royce:It’s me.

Beckett:Royce, turn yourself in.

This gets everyone’s attention.

Royce:I can’t do that, kid. I’m too close to the money to walk away right now. Listen, I just need you to know that I didn’t mean for it to go like this.

Beckett: Did you kill Carver for the map?

Royce: Oh, come on, kid, you know me better than that.

Beckett: [Coldly, hurt] I don't think I do. Because the man I knew wouldn't betray me like this.

Royce: I gotta go.

Beckett: Mike. I was in love with you.

Royce: Oh, Kate. Don't.

Beckett: You were the only one who understood the obsession that drove me. Who didn't tell me that I would get over my mother's murder and that she wouldn't want me to do this.

Royce: [Shaking his head, sadly] Just — just trying to do right by you, kid.

Beckett: I dreamt about you. The night I shot the guy that killed my mother, I dreamt that I was the one who was on the ground dying, and that you came up to me and told me to stand up, 'cause there was still work to be done. [Longingly] When I woke up that morning I just wanted to call you, but we hadn't talked in so long.

Royce: You should've called. I never forgot.

Beckett: I'm going to catch Carver's killer, Royce. And then I'm going to recover Lloyd's score. And when I arrest you, you're going to realize that what you destroyed today was worth a hell of a lot more than money. [She hangs up. Speaks to Ryan, suddenly distant, and unemotional] Did I keep him on long enough?

Ryan: [Shocked] Uh, uh…

Esposito: Yeah, we got an address.

Beckett: All right, let's go.

Castle: Wh-what? All of that was just an act, to get a trace?

Beckett: Of course. [She turns and walks out, her face contorting with silent tears]

Castle Season 3 Episode 5 Anatomy of a Murderer

Beckett:These are just love notes. There’s nothing in here about the escape.

Castle:Then we have to look at these like a romance novel, not a murder mystery. These people are baring their souls in these letters and if we’re lucky we’ll find our Zihuatanejo.

BECKETT gives him an incredulous look.

Castle:In the Shawshank Redemption Andy was trying –

Beckett:No, I know what it is. I’m a cop. I’ve seen the movie. It’s just that there’s nothing about that in here. The only thing that Amy talks about is being innocent of the crime she was convicted of and how much she misses Greg.

Castle:Yeah, it’s pretty clear Greg misses her, too. Listen to this. “The days without you grow longer, but my love for you grows” –

Beckett:Stronger?

Castle:Harder. A poet he’s not.

Beckett:Yeah well, not everyone is a bestselling crime novelist. And it doesn’t mean that their love was any less. Listen to what she wrote to him. “I can’t bear to see you suffer. Make a new life with someone else. Just be happy. If anyone deserves it, it’s you.”

Castle:I think I have his response to that. (he searches, finding the right letter) “I don’t believe in much, but I believe in us.” I like this guy. “And no matter the obstacles, no matter how hard you try, you’ll never get rid of me. I love you.”

He looks up and they both realize how close they’ve gotten and what CASTLE has just said, even if he was just reading.

Castle:You’re right. These are worthless.

They’re both effected by the direction their conversation has taken but neither wants to admit it.

Beckett:So, uh … two lovers reunite after three years. Where would you go?

Castle:(thinking) A motel.

Beckett:Really? That’s what you call special?

Castle:Well … I’m assuming they’re on a budget. Alright, where’s the first place you’d go?

Beckett:I don’t know. Someplace romantic. Someplace with special meaning, maybe.

Castle:(he has a thought) Like the first place they met? (he digs through a stack of letters) “I’ll never forget the first time I laid eyes on you; that cold rainy night inside the Burgeropolis in Hillsdale.” Hillsdale, New Jersey.

He thinks he’s onto something but BECKETT just looks at him.

Beckett:Burgeropolis? You think that’s their special place?

Castle:Yeah, well… that’s … that’s stupid.

Beckett:Maybe we’ll get lucky with the APBs.

Martha:But,the question is this.When it comes down to it,would you be willing to break her out of prison?Because that,my boy,is true love.

GREG and AMY are handcuffed to the bench, waiting their fate, but their together and they’re happy.

Amy:Oh God, I love you so much.

Greg:I love you, too.

Amy:I can’t stand the thought of you getting locked up over me.

Beckett:Well you might not have to.

BECKETT opens to cell gate.

Castle :After hearing all your claims of innocence we decided to go over your arrest file. Turns out, there were a lot of discrepancies.

Beckett:So we sent the files over to Leonard Maloney over at the Attorney General’s office and he agreed.

Castle :Apparently your public defender was a real hack. He overlooked several key pieces of evidence.

Beckett:Including a statement that was ignored because of the eyewitness’s mental illness, so Maloney has agreed to reopen your case, and he believes you have cause to be hopeful.

GREG and AMY are thrilled.

Amy:What about Greg?

Castle :Well, in the spirit of justice, Maloney has said that if you get exonerated he will recommend that Greg get probation.

Amy:Why are you doing all this?

Beckett:Because someone convinced me that a love story as good as yours deserves a shot at a happy ending.

CASTLE and BECKETT watch AMY and GREG. There’s more that CASTLE has forgotten and BECKETT elbows him.

Castle :Oh, um. We feel bad that the state troopers picked you up at Burgeropolis before you could re-live your first date. So until you do get out … (he produces a bag and two drinks from behind his back) … we brought you this. (whispered to GREG) I told them to hold the onions.

GREG and AMY laugh.

CASTLE walks over to ESPOSITO while BECKETT fills out some paperwork for a uniform.

Esposito:That was a nice thing you did in there.

Castle :Nah,I just thought that after everything Greg did for her they deserved a chance.Besides,if it were you and I in Amy’s shoes,we’d still be rotting in prison.

Esposito:Speak for yourself,bro.I’d escape.

Castle :What,you’d just leave me in there?

Esposito:It’s law of the jungle.I gotta look out for numero uno.

Castle :Wow.Nothing like a hypothetical prison term to let you know who your friends really are.

Becketton’t worry,Castle.I’d get you out.

She says it in passing,but it still stops CASTLE.He thinks about that and what his mother said earlier and is struck.He’s not following her and BECKETT notices.

Beckett:You coming?

Castle :Yeah.

Raglan: [Indicates Castle] Lady, what part of "no cops" did you not understand?

Beckett: He's not a cop.

Raglan: Well, who the hell is he, then?

Beckett: Someone I trust.

Beckett: Castle, there's something I need you to do

Castle: Name it.

Beckett: Go home.

Castle: Forget it. Fear does not exist in this dojo.

Beckett: Look, I signed up for this when I put that badge on, you didn't. It's not your fight.

Castle: [Suddenly incensed] The hell it isn't! [Calmer, but completely serious] I don't hang around you just to annoy you, I don't ride off to murder scenes in the middle of the night just to satisfy some morbid curiosity. If that was all this was I would've quit a long time ago.

Beckett: Well, then, why do you keep coming back, Rick?

Castle: [Swallows] Look, I may not have a badge—unless you count the chocolate one Alexis gave me for my birthday—but I'll tell you this: like it or not, I'm your plucky sidekick.

Beckett: Plucky sidekick always gets killed.

Castle : [Shows up in Beckett's apartment]I know what you would do if you won the lottery.
[He lets himself in].

Beckett: By all means, please come in. So, What is your big insight into a financial decision I would never have to make?

Castle : You would use the money to honor your mother's legacy. On the way over here I called the dean of your mom's old school and we talked about starting a scholarship in Johanna Beckett's name. One that will provides a full ride for students planing on dedicating their careers to those in the legal system without a voice, the kind of people your mom championed. And, with your blessing, I would like to host a fundraiser to fund it.

Beckett;[Soft angry voice and face expression]You just can't stay out of my personal life, can you?

Castle;[Looks at her with fearful eyes]

Beckett:[Suddenly smiling and showing great emotion in her face] Thank you, it's really sweet.

Beckett: Yeah, speaking of mentor, I heard that you guys were pretty hard on Conrad last night.

Castle: Hard on him? No, no, it was just a little friendly hazing.

Beckett: To hear him describe it, it sounds like someone was trying to teach him a lesson.

Castle: [Laughs in a forced manner] What? Why would I want to do that?

Beckett: Because you didn't want him to spend time with me?

Castle: That is completely-

Beckett: True?

Castle: [Drops his false humour] Yes. Fine, it's true. I'm jealous. There, I said it. I-I want you all to myself, and to have you spending time with another writer? That upsets me! And if that makes me petty, so be it. Guilty as charged.

Beckett: [Smiles] Actually, I kinda think it's sweet.

Castle: You do?

Beckett: I do. And that's why you don't have to worry about me hanging around with Conrad anymore. From now on I'm a "one writer" girl.

Beckett:Where is he?

Montgomery:Turn around and go back home and let me handle this, all right?

Beckett:Sir, I’ve seen dead bodies before.

Montgomery: turns and looks before stepping aside. BECKETT looks at CASTLE before cautiously making her way forward. CASTLE follows her.

Castle :C’mon, Kate. You don’t want to remember him like this.

Beckett:Castle, if it was me lying there would you just walk away?

CASTLE knows that he wouldn’t, without a doubt. He lets her progress forward.

Castle Season 3 Episode 24 Knockout

Beckett:They found him the same way we did. They ran financials on everybody in that prison.

Castle:Who would have that kind of authority?

Beckett:A cop. Or someone who was a cop. So this third cop wasn’t Lockwood’s target. This third cop was the one holding Lockwood’s leash. He’s the one who’s behind this whole thing. Okay, I want us to pull reports with Raglan wand McCallister name on it.

Ryan:We hit all that already.

Esposito:Months ago. There’s nothing there.

Beckett:No, no. I’m not talking about arrest reports. I’m talking about performance evaluations –

Esposito:We went through everything. We went through every cop we could find who could have worked with them. None of them were our third guy.

Beckett:Well, check it again. And when you’re done with that, check it again.

Ryan:Beckett! We want him as bad as you.

Beckett: The hell you do. Nobody wants him as bad as I do, okay? Nobody. So check it again!

Montgomery:I put a protective detail on her.Plain clothes.These guys are good.

Montgomery:I was working late one night and went down to archives to locate some old reports.And there she was,with a flashlight and a banker’s box open on her lap,studying this unsolved.She was a patrol cop then,she wasn’t even authorized to be down there.When I asked her what the hell she was doing she told me that this was her mother’s case and she found some things that didn’t add up.Now,I could have written her up,right then.

Castle :Why didn’t you?

Montgomery:Because I knew it wouldn’t stop her.It was there in her eyes,man,and I thought with this kid’s tenacity and some training,I mean,she’d made a hell of a homicide.

Castle :That tenacity is going to get her killed.

Montgomery:I cannot make Beckett stand down,Castle.I never could.And the way I figure,the only one that can,is you.

MONTGOMERY leaves a shocked CASTLE.

Castle :Can I come in?

Beckett:Yeah.

Castle :So we went over all of Raglan and McCallister’s old arrest records and you were right.There was a third cop that was with them on a lot of those arrests.But then someone went back into those reports and removed their name.So Ryan and Esposito are right now looking into who was running the records room back then.

Beckett:Castle,you couldn’t have just called me and told me this over the phone?

Castle :Well,yeah …I thought that…

Beckett:Castle,if you’ve got something to say just please say it.

Castle :Beckett everyone associated with this case is dead.Everyone.First your mom and her colleagues,then Raglan,now McCallister.You know they’re coming for you next.

Beckett:Captain Montgomery’s got a protective detail on me.It wasn’t that hard to spot.

Castle :That’s not going to be enough to stop Lockwood,you know that.Think of what they’re up against.Professional killers?Look,I …I’ve been working with you for three years you know me.I’m the guy who says we can move that rubber tree plant but you know what Beckett?I don’t think we’re going to win this.

CASTLE stands by the window, a glass of liquor in his hand. He’s still angry from his conversation with BECKETT. He catches sight of the poster art for ‘Heat Rises’ and it just makes him angrier and he throws his now empty glass at it, sending it to the floor.

Matha:Oh my God,what the hell’s going on here?

Castle :Nothing,I’m sorry.Go back to bed.

Matha:There’s only one person on the planet who can get you this pissed off.

Castle :She’s going to get herself killed.

Matha:She’s a grown woman.She’s a homicide detective,for god’s sakes.It’s her job.It’s her life.

Beckett:Kate.

His book signing is over and CASTLE is leaving. He shakes the hand of the bookstore employees as he’s walking out.

Beckett:Castle,wait.

Castle :I did,three months.You never called.

Beckett:Look,I know you’re angry –

Castle :Oh,you’re damn right,I’m angry.

Castle :I watched you die in that ambulance.Did you know that?Do you know what that’s like?Watching the life drain out of someone you –

Castle :Someone you care about?

Beckett:I told you I needed some time.

Castle :You said a few days.

Beckett:I needed more.

Castle :Well,you should have said that.

Beckett:Castle look I couldn't call you.Not without dragging myself into everything that I was just trying to get some space from.I needed some time to just work through everything.

Castle :Josh help you with that?

Beckett:We broke up.

Beckett:I like the dedication.

Castle :It seemed right.

Beckett:It must have been hard,writing that ending.

Castle :Yeah.Yeah.Given the circumstances,yeah.

Castle :So why did you guys break up?

Beckett:I really,really liked him.

Beckett:But that wasn’t enough.

Beckett:After my mother was killed,something inside me changed.It’s like I built up this wall inside.And I don’t know,I guess I just didn’t want to hurt like that again.I know I’m not going to be the kind of person that I want to be,I know that I’m not going …

Beckett:I’m not going to have the kind of relationship that I want until that wall comes down.And it’s not going to happen until I put this thing to rest.

Castle :Then I suppose we’re just going to have to find these guys and take them down.

Castle :It doesn’t mean I’m still not mad.

Beckett:The boys told me about what you did,following the money trail,trying to track down who the cops paid off.

Castle :I just wish it led somewhere.I mean,I located the files.When the bank closed they took all the dead account paperwork and stored it in a warehouse in Union City.But a couple years after the move fire broke out and the files were destroyed.It’s just another dead end.

Beckett:How did it happen?

Castle :An accident.It was old wiring.

Beckett:Are you sure?

Castle :Yeah,there was an investigation.

Beckett:Well,did you see the report from the fire investigator?

Castle :No,but … really,a warehouse fire?Seems an awful lot of trouble for a couple of files.

Beckett:That’s no more trouble than they’ve already gone through.I mean,we have to read that report.It’s just …there’s this one problem.

Castle :What?

Beckett:How’re you going to help if Gates kicked you out?

Castle :I only let her kick me out because there was no reason to stay.

Beckett:Oh.

Castle :She’ll take me back.

Castle :This guy’s got multiple citations for valor,commendations from the Mayor,he’s literally saved dozens of people from burning buildings.It’s hard to believe this guy’s dirty.

Beckett:Yeah well,we’ve been surprised before.

Castle :Okay,um…does he intersect with anyone else in the case?Montgomery,Raglan,McAllister?

Beckett:No.There’s nothing in the files.He might have known them socially.

Castle :But we’ve been over their lives with a fine tooth comb.He’s never come up once.

Beckett:Okay,so he was a target of opportunity.He might have needed the money.

Castle :Nothing in his financial records to indicate any problems and given his record,he’s …

He pauses.

Beckett:Given his record,what?

Castle :I’m just saying,what if he’s not our guy?What if the fire was an accident?

Beckett:It wasn’t an accident.I know it wasn’t an accident.

Castle :You can’t know that.

Beckett:I can.Because if this was an accident I’ve got nowhere to start.If this was an accident I’ve got nothing.The guy who shot me is gone.Dick Coonan,gone.Hal Lockwood,gone.Montgomery,gone.My mom…everybody is gone,Castle.

He voice breaks as she tries not to cry but it’s not working.She’s trying to hold it together but its harder than it’s ever been.CASTLE doesn’t know how to help.

Castle Season 4 Episode 7 Cops and Robbers

Trapper John:Where’s my bus?

Beckett:The bus is on its way.It’ll be there in 20 minutes.

Trapper John:A hostage will be dead in 2.

Beckett:No,nobody needs to die,okay?It’s coming,it’s just –it’s stuck in traffic.

Trapper John:We have rules,Kate.I said I wouldn’t kill anyone,you said you’d get me a bus.I lived up to my end of the deal.

Beckett:And I’m going to live up to mine,it just –

Trapper John:I warned you not to jerk me around.Now I was clear about the consequences.Do I have to prove how serious I am?Is that it?

Beckett:Okay,I –I think we both just need to take a deep breath and we can talk about this…

Trapper John:I’m done talking!

He’s shot through a computer screen.

Beckett:What was that?

Trapper John:A warning shot,Kate.The next one’s for the kill!

Mathaon’t you touch him,you son of a bitch!

Castle :Hey!Hey,hold her back!I got this!

Trapper John:I’m going to make pretty red stains out of your boyfriend, Kate.I got my gun to his throat and I’m going to paint a Jackson Pollock with his insides.

Peterson:You need to calm him down.

Beckett:Listen to me,jackass.I do not control traffic,so you’re going to have to give me 20 minutes.

Trapper John:Now you got 1 minute,Kate!

Beckett:No!I’ve got 20.Do you hear me?20.Because if you pull that trigger,I will walk through those doors and personally put a bullet through your skull.

Trapper John:Okay,Kate.You’ve got 20 more minutes.

Peterson:Well,that’s one way to negotiate.

Castle Season 4 Episode 9 Kill Shot

Castle :That was just a startle response. It could happen to anyone.

Beckett:Yeah well, I’m not anyone.

Castle :No, I’m just saying –

Beckett:Well, just don’t!

Castle :How worried should I be about Beckett? She’s never snapped at me like that before.

He sits and gets a look from Esposito.

Castle :And meant it.

Esposito:Hell, it was bad for me when I came back and I never took a bullet.

Castle :Well, at least she doesn’t remember it.

Esposito:Or she doesn’t want to remember.

CASTLE considers that.

Esposito:A thing like that? It’s just easier to keep in a box. This case might bust that box open.

Castle :So what can we do?

Ryan:Catch the shooter.

Esposito:He’s right. It’s the best thing for everyone. Beckett included. In the meantime, just give her space and don’t take it personally.

Beckett: Espo,what are we doing back here?

Esposito: I wanna show you something.

Beckett: What is that?

Esposito: It’s a rifle.That shot you.

Beckett: You are way out of line.

Esposito: Just look at it.

Beckett: No…what the hell are you doing?

Esposito: I’ve been where you are.I know what you’re going through.

Beckett: Javi,I’m fine.

Esposito: You’re not fine.You’re just trying to act like you are.This is just a tool.It’s a hunk of steel.It has no magical powers and the person that fired it is not some all-powerful god.He’s just a guy,with a gun.Just like the guy we’re hunting now.And like every other bad guy,he’s damaged goods.

Beckett: So am I.

Esposito: That’s right.And that’s okay.You think it’s a weakness?Make it a strength.It’s a part of you.

Esposito:So use it.

Castle : Hey.

Beckett: Hey.What are you doing?

Castle : Just waiting for my partner.Maybe you have seen her.Pretty girl,thinks she can leap tall buildings in a single bound,carries the weight of the world on her shoulders, yet still manages to laugh at some of my jokes.

Beckett: She sounds like a handful.

Castle : Tell me about it.Anyway,if you do see her,tell her she owes me about … a hundred coffees.

Beckett: Castle?

Beckett: Thank you.

Castle : For what?

Beckett: For not pushing and giving me the space to get through this.

Castle : Always.

BECKETT is sitting in the chair. She’s unguarded this time, fingering the doll statue on the side table.

Dr.Burke:So, how do you feel now that Lee Travis is dead?

She takes her time in her answer.

Beckett:I thought that taking him down would resolve things, but it’s still there.

Dr.Burke:Because you haven’t fully dealt with what happened to you.

Beckett:No… I felt it before the shooting. I think it’s always been there, deep inside since that night.

Dr.Burke:The night your mom was killed.

Beckett:Mmhmm. I’ve let it define me, drive me. It’s made me who I am, but now …

Dr.Burke:But now?

Beckett:I want to be more … than who I am. But I don’t know if I know how to do that without letting my mom down.

It’s hard for her to talk about, hard for her to admit, but she does.

Dr.Burke:She’s dead, Kate. You can’t let her down. The only person you can let down is yourself.

She can’t stop the tears from falling.

Dr.Burke:Her death is part of you, and you’re going to have to make peace with that. Just like you’re going to have to make peace with the scars from your shooting. But it doesn’t have to limit you.

Beckett:How am I supposed to let go?

Dr.Burke:I can help you. But the question is, are you ready?

She thinks about what he’s asking. She nods slowly.

Beckett:Yeah, I think I am.
