OfflineSince it was the mayor who let Castle follow Beckett around for book research, I have some questions.
How long is the Mayor's Term in New York City?
If it is only 4 years will there be a campaign for mayor in season 4?
What happens during the campaign ie…will Castle be kicked out again by Gates?
What happens to Castle if there is a new mayor elected and he/she isn't a fan or friend of Castle?
What if it is a women who becomes the mayor?
Will she be a fan of Castle's Books (since it seems that Castle fans are mostly women) or not?
What would Beckett do if Castle dated the mayor before?
Do you think they will have an episode that has these elements in it or two?
Office of the mayor is four years. Current incumbent is Michael Bloomberg, a Republican. Next mayoral election is scheduled for November of 2013.
The department is actually run by a commissioner. (like from Batman) but the commissioner is not civil service and serves at the mayor's pleasure. Mayor is a fan means the commissioner will go along. The office of commissioner is supposed to stop this kind of goofiness on the part of the mayor, but in reality it may make the pressure more intense.

OfflineIn the Episode where Heat Wave came out, Season 2 Episode 5, and Castle and Beckett were on the phone at the end of the episode Beckett talked to Cpt. Montgomery and said "Yes, I am aware that the Mare is facing a tough reelection this year…" so I assume that the reelection took place in Season 2 so Season 3 would be the first year of this term and the next campaign should earliest start in the fifth season.

OfflineIt's been alluded that Gate's views her position as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. Who knows, there may be another Captain in her seat with another mind set at some future point. I hope she sticks around for a long time. I don't particularly "like" her, but I don't think that I'm suppose to, or that I need too. I am really enjoying the energy and the dynamic that she brings into the precinct. I want to see it play out to it's conclusion and where they all end up with each other.

I think the Mayor's term of office is 4 years, limited to two consecutive terms. So he would not be eligible to campaign again. He is another character that I would like to see again. Not frequently, but once or twice.

New York City Mayors serve for 4 years. They can run for re-election 2 more times for a total of 12 years. If S2.5 was his first re-election then he will be in office long after Gates retires.

I'm with you. She's a prize pain – but that's what she's supposed to be. The sparks she causes make me smile. Frankly, a Captain with serious reservations about a civilian 'partner' of one of her homicide detectives is probably pretty realistic. Not everyone is (or should be) a fan of Mr. Castle, least of all a precinct captain responsible to the the brass and the public for what happens in that precinct. No matter how many forms and waivers Castle signed, if he got injured or killed while with Beckett, there'd be hell to pay – and Gates would be directly in the line of fire (if i may mix my metaphors).

I totally agree with you, a precinct captain with the responsibility for a lot's of cops must look forward to rule as best as possible to solve cases and keep her people save. Castle already proved to the cap that he is able to solve cases but without a weapon (of course he can shoot but without a weapon a wasted talent) and especially no combat training he is a risk which the cap has definitly to carry together with the responsibility. So as hard as it's sound Montgomery always was too friendly and accommodating to the homicide squad and Castle.
Yeah, Gates might be a hardliner but I think that's the gag behind her, she is the one on the dark side of the force and Castle trys to pull her over to the light side which brings some balance where she can handle things by the book but also allows Beckett, Castle and the squad the help people out of the ordinary without fearing some after-effects.
Actually I hope the next time the Mare appears in the show it has something to do with a case, personal related or even as a suspect. Politics are never the best friend of a cop so there should be a lots of problems to be solved. Also I was hoping to sea him in another poker night again (which I discussed already in another post).

Just so you know: I think you mean "Mayor", "Mare" is a female horse.
