OfflineSince the pilot episode, Castle has been shadowing Beckett at the precinct helping her with cases and catching murderers. In the time that he has been there he has demonstrated the mindset required to solve these cases on a level very close to Beckett. Recently, Beckett has even stated that Castle is someone she trusts and thinks of him as a true partner. The difference between Beckett and Castle is the badge she wears and I believe that an interesting turn for the show to take into season four is to upgrade Castle to a detective. He has the mental ability to function as a great detective, especially with a partner like Beckett but he needs to obtain a knowledge of the rules and regulations of the system. Castle has been shown to be an extremely intelligent person, quick learner, and even good with a firearm. Castle is with Beckett on every case even when the situations are obviously dangerous, going as far as to stay in the city and help Beckett find the dirty bomb. This change wouldn't take away anymore time from his life as a writer than it already does but would open up a lot of doors for the characters and the show. Castle wouldn't just be a civilian helping out but a detective that brings the insight he has for nearly three seasons with a badge to boot. Let me know what you think.

No way… that would ruin the show. Part of what makes Castle so special is that there is that "Ying" and "Yang" b/t the rules and procedures Beckett/Esposito/Ryan have to work with and the more free-spirited Castle. He needs to remain the writer and her (them) the cops. Additionally, you don't just "become a detective". You first have to go through the academy and then be a beat cop before being assigned to a division such as homicide. I can't see Castle going through the regimented process of going through the academy. If anything were to change I would like to see Beckett teach Castle had to spare and grapple in the case he is attacked… plus who doesn't want to see Castle and Beckett all sweaty and wrestling in the gym.

No way, Castle is the writer and Beckett the detective, this is the soul of this series. But it would be nice if he got some official like an ID card or something.
Since the cops don't wear cards I doubt they'd give Castle one, especially since he's been around for 2+ years. I know at the PD my dad worked at plain clothed officers had CCW on their access card (Carrying Concealed Weapon) in addition to their badges. If they had given Castle some sort of card early in season 1 that would work, but now it's kind of like, who really cares. It's kind of like where my dad works now, you are supposed to sign in to go upstairs and they have to buzz you in, but since everyone knows me I walk in, wave, and they buzz me up without question.

He wouldn't need to be a detective , they (the PD) could hire him as official profiler/consultant with Castle donating any nominal fee to the Widows & Orphans Fund …
… but this would turn it too much into The Mentalist (or Monk?) …
Martha: Freud was an addict but that didn’t stop him from helping people. Castle: Sadly, faced with his monther’s twisted, yet unimpeachable logic, Richard Castle’s head exploded.

But again… It would change the dynamic from him being the WRITER to him being a "consultant". I know that his role has gone beyond research, but "hiring" him would take away the premise of the show. I guess it's just the blue-blood in me that won't allow me to wrap my head around him taking the title of a hired consultant or cop. They would have to change the intro…
There are two kinds of folks who sit around thinking about how to kill
people: psychopaths and mystery writers. I'm the kind that pays better.
Who am I?
Richard Castle:
I'm Rick Castle.
Richard Castle:
Castle.
Richard Castle:
Castle.
Richard Castle:
I really am ruggedly handsome, aren't I?
Richard Castle:
[v.o] Every writer needs inspiration, and I found mine.
Kate Beckett:
Detective Kate Beckett.
Kate Beckett:
Beckett.
Kate Beckett:
Beckett.
Kate Beckett:
Nikki Heat?
Martha Rodgers:
The character he's basing on you.
Richard Castle:
[v.o] And thanks to my friendship with the Mayor, I get to be on her case.
Richard Castle:
I'd be happy to let you spank me.
Richard Castle:
[v.o] And together we catch killers.
Richard Castle:
We make a pretty good team, you know. Like Starsky and Hutch, Turner and Hooch.
Kate Beckett:
You do remind me a little of Hooch.

The Mentalist gave me the idea of the ID card.

Hence my now bold line, I wouldn't want that to happen either. It's been done too often recently.
I still like the
Beckett: Kate Beckett, NYPD.
Castle: Richard Castle, just NY.
lines from Nanny. I think that was actually the first episode I watched in the UK thinking "this is going to be fun".
Martha: Freud was an addict but that didn’t stop him from helping people. Castle: Sadly, faced with his monther’s twisted, yet unimpeachable logic, Richard Castle’s head exploded.

By the way after I read the intro, would it be realistic if the mayor has to quit his job somewhere in the future? And what would happen to Castle then? Not everybody is a fan of him.
I'm sure the capt would rally around him and he wouldn't be forced out. I could maybe see the posibility of a minor problem if the mayor changed, but it's obvious that he has been a help and not a hindorence in addition to the fact that he's buddies with the commissioner and some judges (reference "Ghosts" season 1 poker game). Look at all the times the FBI wanted him away from a case, but he ended up being a real help. Unless Castle does something outragously stupid and dangerous I don't really see him being forced out of working at the 12th. Again, the only real change I'd like to see is some hot, sweaty, sparring b/t Castle and Beckett up in the gym. I mean she wants him to be prepared for hand-to-hand combat if ever needed and I don't think she'd want anyone else "instructing" him.[Image Can Not Be Found][Image Can Not Be Found]

Do we know if Bob IS still mayor? He was facing a difficult re-election in 2x05 and for all we know, the new mayor may also be a fan.

Yep, I'm totally with you on this one. Although looking at Castle, I wonder how fit he is, Beckett easily outruns him, even in heels. He did an impressive car hood slide in Under the Gun but does Castle keep physically fit by going to a gym? And I don't mean Yoga and Pilates.

We haven't heard otherwise, but I'd guess yes b/c part of the 3 book deal in season 2 was that the mayor was running for reelection and liked the positive publicity that Castle was bringing. Therefore, assuming he won that year (nov 2009) he'd be mayor for another four years

I'd guess he's in shape. He's a pretty big guy and has a broad chest but not a belly so I'd guess he's strong. We've also seen him shirtless with DFT and Ellie and he was pretty toned. Speed isn't always related to strength. I've known plenty of people who are really fast and lean, but not as physically (muscularly) strong as someone else. I guess we'll just have to wait and see when we finally get that gym scene[Image Can Not Be Found]
