OfflineAfter watching the opening scenes of 4.12 (Dial M for Mayor), I downloaded King Lear to read on my phone. This got me thinking about what else has Castle inspired me to download? I've also watched It Happened One Night, The Thin Man and The Blue Dahlia. This in addition to the Nikki Heat books and the Derek Storm graphic novel.
So, I'm putting out the question: What books, classic movies, or whatever, has Castle inspired you to read or watch that you probable wouldn't have otherwise?

OfflineWe watched It Happened, The Thin Man (two or three so far), Firefly, Bringing up Baby (before we even knew about the tiger episode!) and then a couple other old films like The Maltese Falcon. My husband watched some of the James Bond films after the show when he was offered a Bond book deal. I have bought some "Beckett-flavored" clothes, namely gloves and shoes, and a few pairs of pants. I can't afford her jackets, and in my town it would be silly to spend so much on something you never much wear. What is more interesting to note, though, is that since catching on to the Castle show and its epicness, we have STOPPED watching everything else that we used to like because they just can't hold their water. No more Bones, House, Weeds, CSI, or Criminal Minds. We just can't get into them any more. So we only watch Castle and we spend a lot more time doing other things!

OfflineCastle used to mention Poe quite often and this caused me to re-read some of his books that I hadn't read in many years. And there was even an episode of the old Alfred Hitchcock Presents TV show that I watched recently on DVD which referenced Poe's The Cask of Amantillado? Armadillo? Something like that? – I picked up on the reference right away, thanks to Rick Castle!
I suppose watching the PCAs could be attributed to Castle, too. I don't usually watch awards shows but manage to suffer through – um, I mean, watch – the entire thing just to see if Castle would win!

OfflineI signed up for a Citizens Police Academy series that the police department where I work offers. It sounds really awesome! You get basic information about all of the departments, from crime scene investigation, shooting simulations, ride alongs, and each department head is going to speak about their area of expertise. It's a 9 week class that starts in March and I'm really excited about it! The police department is offering it for free as part of it's community/police relations efforts. I took a self defense class today with them… which reminded me of Beckett's sparring sessions
I think crime solving is fascinating and I'm excited to learn more about it. Who knows… maybe I will have a career change!

OfflineThe biggest difference between Castle and any other TV show is that I take the time to read and post on this forum, and find it adds a lot to the enjoyment of the show. Watching a show that stimulates the sort of thinking and analysis Castle does is a first related to TV programs, at least for me. But then I think this forum and it's participants are unique. I've not seen anything like it for other programs.
My wife and I have read the Nikki Heat books, they are on our Nooks. We are looking forward to the next one in the fall of 2012. I noticed that Dial M has Castle writing again, haven't seen that for a few episodes.
PS: Single digit math is good on a 1/4 cup of coffee.

OfflineI've read the Nikki Heat books and bought the novel by Will Beall (LA Rex), because he was my favorite screen writer for the show. His episodes are still among my most favorites (JG murder case). I have loved old movies (especially the Thin Man series) since I was little. I think at some level I realized that Castle in a way honors these old movies and that is in part why I've liked it since I first heard about it way back in the middle of the second season. But, watching the show has 'forced' me to rewatch some golden oldies such as It happened one night.

I had no idea Will Beall was a working LAPD Homicide Detective. On Barnes & Noble it says LA Rex was written by an officer who is still on the force. How does Will do that I wonder? Is it for sure the same guy?
My wife taught school (In Thousand Oaks for 35 years) with a fellow teacher who used to write for TV shows, so it's possible. I just wouldn't have thought of it for Will. He's good enough to do it full time. We should see Will at the Poker Games!
I'd be surprised if he and Connley don't know each other.

OfflineGreat topic He-Touches-Things!
This show is unique in that it inspired me to go looking for information on the internet for an episode in mid-season 2, something I have never done for a show before. That lead me to this site, and the interaction on this forum, which enhances the viewing experience for me, as Fitch mentioned. I thoroughly enjoy the analysis of the story lines and the characters and their relationships.
The interest in the show has lead to 2 trips to California so far (one for Comic Con and one for Castle Con), and I have plans to go to Paley Fest in March as well. Those experiences are wonderful in terms of hearing from the cast and writers in person, but they have been enhanced by connecting with other fans, a number of whom have become friends.
This show led me to watch Firefly, Thin Man, and For Lovers Only because I was interested in the actors' work and the inspiration for the series. I have always been a fan of classic movies, and have seen many of the ones that are mentioned as inspiration for episodes.
I have read all the Heat books and I own the graphic novel (although I have not read it yet). I started the In Death series by JD Robb because I was told the characters have a Castle-esque vibe.
I watched the PCAs and began caring about TV ratings for the first time since watching Castle. The Castle seasons are among the few TV series DVDs I own, and the staircase print from Castle's office hangs in our home as well.

dmcw, after reading your post I realized I forgot to mention the main change in my life since I started really being hooked by Castle: this website! It adds a whole different level to my love and appreciation for the show and I am so happy to always exchange thoughts/ideas/theories with the other members of this board.
So, huge "thank you" to admin for making this experience even possible.
I also own all the DVDs and even pre-ordered (for the first time ever) the season 3 set!

OfflineNice idea for a thread! It's awesome to see how this show has helped a lot of people branch out and try new things.
I've been a lurker around here for ages but never actually posted anything, but this seems a good way to start.
Castle got me hooked on Bones and The X-Files (the former because so many people compared it to Castle, the latter so I could understand the references made in Castle). Besides discovering the awesomeness of Mulder and Scully, Castle got me interested in forensic science. I'm an undergrad now, but I'm pre-med and planning on becoming a forensic pathologist (I saw my first autopsy last week!).

LAPD does have a detective by the name of Will Beall. Whether they are one in the same, I haven't a clue. I suspect if we did a bit of sleuthing on our own, we could put some pieces together to figure it out

For me, I would have never in the past concidered buying a graphic novel, and the only other time I got online to communicate with others about a show was Xena. That interaction lead to the creation of a few new friends in RL, and to whom, I am still friends with today.

On the back of the cover for LA Rex or the inside note about the author (cannot recall which) it says that the screen writer Will Beall was (at the point in time in which he wrote that book) also a LA homicide detective. He used his experiences in the field to write the novel. At some point he must have turned to writing full time. Here a couple of webpages for info:

http://thefilmstage.com/news/w…..daptation/
I guess he left Castle for a good reason as there is lots for him to do out there.
Just one of those things I learned while watching Castle (to return to the topic of the thread :-) )

Wow! Something practical! I had no idea they did that.
