Why I think DMB may have already been on the way out

In The Dead Pool, Beckett didn't seem to have any hesitation about spending time after hours with Alex Conrad.  I don't believe she had any interest in him other than his research or, more likely, to make Castle jealous.  However, a girl with a boyfriend would be spending those late hours with the dude she was with, right?  I know I would.  And as far as we know, he wasn't off saving the world, so???  I found that interesting…

Well…As in a modern woman from modern days, she can spend time with whoever she wants whenever she wants even if she is in a serious relationship. Plus, she really likes reading and mystery novels as a whole. Spending time with another writer, having another perspective to that kind of work would be fascinating for her.

Of course, that's absolutely true.  But she always "complains" about Castle.  It just seems like she wouldn't encourage yet another bothersome writer taking up her time.
I do think her ultimate motivation was to make Castle jealous, but still…where was DMB while she was spending time with all these other guys?  My husband would have been very curious.  wink

Also, got to keep in mind the 'D' in DMB. It's highly likely DMB was working – he seems to do that a lot, even when he's not on a doctors without borders mission.

Beckett seemed quite happy to let Natalie Rhodes shadow her in 'Nikki Heat' (until she became the Beckett clone), I don't think it's a massive leap for her to let Alex Conrad shadow her too.

Sometimes you're meant to be with someone, just not forever. I think Beckett is supposed to have this relationship with DMB. I'm sure at first she thought it was a good match. They're both career driven and have dedicated their lives to helping people. She was slowly starting to realise she wanted someone to be there for her and with Josh she might never get that, because he's off saving the world. Then, of course, he didn't go to Haiti. I think that was huge for Beckett, especially after Sorensen, who left her to follow his career. Ultimately she's gonna realise Josh isn't the one she wants to be with, but in the meantime she's learning that she can rely on someone.

Plus, DMB has no idea about her mother's murder… and now that Kate is shot, I can easily imagine the situation of him being totally freaked out, asking "what the hell is going on here???" and realizing that being with her is too dangerous for him…

Given that we've seen more of Castle's ex-wives than we have of Dr. Fabio McCardiogram (DMB) and that she treats him a lot like a friend with benefits, he has been toast for a while. Especially given the 'fight' in 3X24 where she's pushing Castle to come clean and the angry quote about 'running around with the funniest guy in school and it's not enough!' Josh is gone or, if he isn't, he's on his way there.

Kate comes across as a woman who enjoys space and time alone and doesn't have to have a guy in her life to fill the empty space so Josh is really just filler. Castle, on the other hand, is going to be in a bind when Alexis goes off to school in Dec/Jan leaving a huge hole in his life.  She has strong feelings for him and, because of his mixed signals, hasn't yet allowed herself to consider those feelings being anything other than wishful thinking. With Castle finally saying the words out loud, whether Josh is still around or not shouldn't really matter as once one of them finally decides to just thow caution to the wind, Josh will be forgotten.

Since neither of them are married, there should be no barriers they can't overcome this season into figuring it out. smile

I believe that you missed Two words in your assessment. Between "who" and "enjoys" you forgot ..THINKS SHE ..

So putting it all together you have:

"Kate comes across as a woman who thinks she enjoys space and time alone …"

See the difference. It's huge. And that's where I think she is. Way back in season 2 (that has a nice ring to it like "season 4" does) in THIRD she goes to Lanie and says she's "tired of quiet … wants loud" Granted I believe that was totally in response to Castle getting a date with bachelorette #3 – but there was a lot of truth in that statement too.

I agree. And the fact that she's been with Josh for a whole season speaks volumes. We know she's not in love with him, but I think the fact that she's been in a relationship with him for a year means that she wants her life to change. A part of her wants it to change. Another part is not ready for that, and is scared. And Castle figured that out pretty well in Knockout when he told her about her relationships with men she doesn't love. She's really complicated, but that's also what makes her interesting. She wants something but she's not completely ready to do what it takes to get it.

I'm gonna reply to this post with a post I made to the TWOP Castle board:

I'm looking forward to Season 4, because the ending of this last season was so different from Season 1 and 2.

In Season 1—Beckett kicks him to the curb. They are estranged for the summer.

In Season 2—Castle "kinda" kicks Beckett to the curb. Whatever it is that happened, they are (again) estranged for the summer.

Season
3—Sure, Kate gets shot, it's obviously a serious, near deadly injury,
but no one got kicked to the curb. She acknowledged how important it
was to her that Castle was there to "stand by" her, and he told her that
he loved her. No. ESTRANGEMENT! Progress!

Looking forward to
Season 4. I'm finding myself trusting Marlowe and Company to avoid the
"Bones Curse" and to continue progressing with the romantic relationship
between Rick and Kate. It may not happen as fast as we would like it
(but, that's what fanfic is for…) but it will happen.

I think Josh was done and over with after the LA ep.  We will see him in the first ep of season 4, because he's a doctor, a cardiac surgeon, and they will need him to operate on Kate.

When he enters the waiting room to give the news to her friends and family about her surgery, they'll be all "Wait. You're her BF. They LET you operate on her?!" And he'll be all (in an echo to the season 3 ep where he was introduced) "Kate and I broke up a while ago. Right after her trip to LA. She didn't tell you?"

At least that's what I'm hoping for.

Absolutely.  This is exactly what I've been saying/hoping for a month now.  I think the Josh break up may have happened even earlier than LA, but LA would be ok with me as well.  [Image Can Not Be Found]

Bear in mind everyone what Castle said to Beckett during that argument in her apartment: she's afraid of truly being happy.  Being with Castle represents true happiness.  Being with DMB represents having someone nice, handsome, and smart around some of the time but not to fully appreciate you for you.  Until someone can get Beckett to face her fear, as Castle almost did during that fight, she's not gonna be ready to take the leap with Castle.

This is a TV show, not a Kunderan adaptaion of "The Unbearable Lightness of Being Kate Beckett" where the moment anyone achieves happiness, they die.

Maybe I'm just not overthinking it enough, but they have enough baggage to make it interesting, not so much to make it impossible.

If you want to go Kundera, buy that girl a bowler hat as she's going to need it…ALWAYS. smile

I have a different theory about this. At the end of the Countdown episode (3.17) Castle was about Beckett to ask something but he saw DMB approach so he backed down. But when DMB and Beckett hugged she had the same look she had with Demming when Castle backed down as well. Quit subtle but it showed the viewers that Beckett started to realize that Castle won't stay around too long to watch her with another guy.

During the next episode One Life to Lose the murdered woman was about to break up with her husband because she was spending too much time at her job and it caused a rift in their relationship. That may have been the hint about DMB being too busy with being the perfect doctor. Especially the way it was put in the scene they talked about this made me wonder. Besides during that episode is the last time we see DMB because he calls her but waits to thank Castle first.

and she also hesitated to pick up the phone….which spoke volumes!

That did speak volumes, Drama Wonder.  If nothing else, she's trying not to rub it in Castle's face like she did with Demming.

What I'm curious about is in Countdown, the morning after Beckett and Castle are saved from the freezer, Castle brings Beckett their usual coffee and sits in his normal chair next to her desk.  She takes the coffee, then looks like she's going to say something but stops herself.  What was it she was going to say?  Something about DMB?  Something about what she was going to say to him before she passed out in the freezer?
