OfflineJust curious…
If sometime down the road, they should get married do you think Beckett would take the Castle name, or do you think she would keep her own, or do the hyphenated thing? Beckett-Castle
The other thing is, Castle isn't Ricks given name. Even though this is his current official name since he changed it, do you think there would be a consideration of his 'given' name (Richard Alexander Rogers) to Beckett if they should marry? Especially, since she was told once, by a psychic, that someone named Alexander would be very important to her and would save her life.
Would they name there kids (if they have them) Castle, or Rogers. …..BTW, what is Alexis full name? Is her last name Castle? Have they ever said?
I wonder about these things…do you?

OfflineI doubt personally that Beckett would take up Castle´s name. She´s so independent and individualistic that it´s seem strange for her to become Katherine Castle. If anything, she might take up something like Katherine Rodgers – Beckett or something but I don´t think she´d use the last name Castle.
Alexis´s name is Alexis Castle I believe but Martha is Martha Rodgers.

I thought Rick legally changed his last name too Castle. Maybe Beckett would take Castle name but use Beckett for work.

I would agree. She's got such a good reputation as Katherine Beckett, that I couldn't see her changing her name. And I could see Castle being ok with it. If they have a son, they could give him the last name Rodgers or Castle to keep the name going.

i personally think that even castle wouldn't mind if beckett wants to keep her surname… maybe if they do get married and have children (hopefully) they will use combination of both surname…
Good point. That would keep Beckett's name going as well since she has no brothers. Unless she's got a nephew or long lost uncle out there we haven't heard of.

OfflineThere's a teeny tiny fanfic that says Beckett can never take Castle's name because her middle name is Fionna. If she took the Castle last name she'd be KFC and that's just not on! Of course, they've never told us what KB's middle name is, so who knows.
Frankly, i can't imagine changing my name to my husband's – my name is a fundamental part of who i am, as his is part of him. It's also the name on which i've built my career and professional reputation. I'd never ask him to change his name and wonder why anyone would expect me to do so. I understand others may feel differently, but if you need a common name to make you a 'family' i think you've got other issues to deal with. If you think Beckett is the type to need Castle's permission for anything she wants to do – then you see a very different Beckett and a very different dynamic between the two than i do.
There's also lots of places where your birth name is yours forever, unless you go through the formal exercise of a legal name change – like if i were changing my name to John Doe. (Quebec is one of those places.)
I've heard all the arguments on needing the same last name for the kids – but with serial marriages and step kids all over the place a remarkably large number of kids bear a different last name from at least one of the people who act as parent – mother's new husband, daddy's new wife, etc. The world adapts.
One female friend ( a lawyer) is the last of her family carrying the family name and kept it on her marriage – to no one's surprise. Her husband is one of 6 brothers, each of whom have lots of male children. When their son was born they gave him her last name. No hyphenations – just her last name. Both families supported the decision, but an amazing array of their friends and more distant relatives were shocked – even the ones who didn't change names on marriage. Old habits die hard with some people.

That's hilarious!
I agree with everything else you said. I can't imagine taking the name of my partner, married or not, my name is my identity. If it is to change, it would be because I identify better with a different name. But I think this is a very personal matter and will be different for everyone, regardless of current values or traditions.

OfflineI had no problems with changing to my husband's name and I had ( even at the age of 23) numerous publications in my maiden name. I liked his better! I am who I am independent of what people call me – I'm Lisa, Mom, Mum, Lilbit ( that's my grandma's nickname) Mrs. X and Hey You. Today at work one tech kept calling me Brenda (still trying to figure that one out). Lol. If I ever finish the book I'm writing I may even have a pen name! It is easier on our kids that we all have the same name. Not crucial, just less complicated and who needs complicated?!
I would hope Beckett would be able to do whatever she wanted with her name without being judged either way. After all, isn't that what being an independent female is all about – having the freedom to choose?
