OfflineOkay Castle fans, what do we know about Clara Strike from the Castle resources we already have?
I thought it might be a good idea to list what we know about Clara's character prior to the two parter that way those of us who aren't caught up on all the publications (books, graphic novel, journals from website). This may give us some insight as to Castle's history with Sophia Conrad going into Pandora and Linchpin.

OfflineOoh I love a good mystery and a meta one is even better!
I was reading through the blurbs for the novels on the Richard Castle site, and they call Clara Strike Derrick Storm's CIA handler over many many novels. They have some pretty cool adventures, but the summaries leave a lot to the imagination about their relationship.
The graphic novel has them meeting while he is still a PI and, by the end he is still a PI but undercover as a covert CIA agent, and he has a handler who is not Clara because she is dead. It's assumed, in the way they end the story, that he joined the CIA because of how she died. So the graphic novel changed the Storm origin story that was created for the novels.
I wonder why they truncated Clara Strike's character arc to one novel when they "rewrote" for the graphic novel?

OfflineOh, man I'm gonna have to get that comic, aren't I lol! Why would they change Clara's character from the novels to the graphic novel? Easy…to make it fit in with whatever they are planning for the two-parter. They wanted to call it (back in) to the reader's attention/focus. And don't forget Beckett bought it too (to be supportive…lol). I CANNOT WAIT for her reaction to when she meets the inspiration for the Clara character and Castle's information/background on their actual relationship. Oh, this is going to be goooood

Offlinethis is the synopsis of storm fall – the last of the derrick storm series.
Storm Fall
Synopsis: Storm is finally feeling like he has his life back: a few open and shut PI cases that lack any danger or intrigue and no recent calls from CIA Agent Clara Strike. But when her lack of contact begins to concern him, Storm begins to search for the woman who he has begun to care for as more than just a colleague. But what Storm unravels quickly turns his world upside down. Is Clara the CIA agent she claimed to be or a rogue spy operating outside of the law? Just when he begins to scratch the surface of the truth, his bank account is drained and a murder of a rival PI is pinned on him. Storm must take on his most challenging client yet: himself. Is this the work of Clara or one of his many enemies? Storm has to comb through his entire career as a PI and as a secret CIA operative: every criminal he put away, every crime he solved, every life he affected, in order to find out who would do this to him. Will he find the culprit pulling the puppet strings or will this be the end of Derrick Storm?
The synopsis also talks about the personal nature of their relationship. He searches for her and he has begun to care for her more than just a collegue. I assume castle n sophia had the same will they/won't they going on in real life as c/b. And didnt he kill storm in this book? And also wasn't he divorced to gina when storm fall came out in 1x01???
And now here is my theory. He was in love in with her but did not act towards it because he was still married. Then sophia dissapeaes prob because she too loved him but he was married, he gets depressed, kills off the storm character, due to his feelings for sophia, his marraige with gina goes kaput.

Nice theory, but nope
Just kidding. Actually, I do disagree but it is of course just my opinion. I do not think they are going to make the split between Castle and Gina anything more than it has already been shown to be. They probably should not have gotten married in the first place, because she is not the kind of woman he wants to share his life with. It was apparently quite an amicable split… end of story.
What I think is more likely a backstory for Castle and "Sophia" is that they worked together and she provide the inspiration for the Clara Strike character. And the fictional versions of their characters were romantic and steamy and the basis for fabulously successful books. But in real life Castle and "Sophia" were just friends, or maybe even that she liked him but he squished it quickly. So the Castle/Sophia relationshiph will actually emphatically show that Castle/Beckett is not about the books but is about Rick being crazy about Kate. The end to what is probably one of Beckett's secret worries about Castle; would he want her if she was not his muse.

RickNotCastle completely agree. This is very plausable and will actually show Beckett that Castle loves her regardless of her being his muse. Also, we know that the books were just an excuse to spend more time with her. That right there, speaks volumes.

I'm not sure I'd want to claim that much (although it is possible). Assuming that Storm (much like Rook) are literary figures loosely based on Rick himself, I gather that much like the characters Storm and Clara, Rick and Sophia started to develop a closer relationship. He may or may not have been married when he wrote this particular book. Or his marriage to Gina may have been on the rocks already. What I do find interesting is the suggestion that through the evidence presented to him, Storm needs to question whether he can trust Clara (apparently he wonders if she is behind some of these occurrences) or not. Again, if this is based on real occurrences between Rick and Sophia, he may have felt disappointed or betrayed by Sophia and worked it into the book as part of the plot.
That would open up an interesting aspect to Castle's character. He appears very open and trusting, we have not heard much about his past experiences with being lied to or being betrayed. We know that Meredith cheated on him, and then we were there with him when Damien Westlake wasn't what Castle believed him to be. It becomes even more interesting if we think about the fact that Kate is keeping a pretty big secret from him that is bound to hurt his feelings. — I don't know if I were to write this episode I'd take that loop. But of course, I'm not (which is really good thing!) and so we'll have to wait and see.
Or, if we go with you idea, lulu, it would be equally interesting to see a conversation between Castle and Kate about his previous romantic involvement with someone in whom he found inspiration to create a literary character. Either way…I'm looking forward to this one!

OfflineWell here's something to think about. While it says Storm questioned Clara's motives in his books, Rook has never questioned Nikki's motives or integrity even when the whole NYPD was against her. So Castle may have had some sort of attachment to Sophia at some point, but she may have done something that made him question her character/their relationship.

When I read the synopsis for Storm Fall, I'm wondering if Storm hasn't heard from Clara because she is dead. So perhaps in the graphic novel, they needed her to explain Derrick's origin as a CIA operative, but want to take the subsequent graphic novels (assuming there will be more) in another direction with another handler. The Clara/Derrick dynamic has already been done (in books that we will never be able to read, drat), so perhaps it's a matter of not "repeating" themselves (meta or just mind-bendy?). I'm wondering if AWM had it in mind to bring in Sophia way back when they were figuring out the plot for the graphic, and how much that might play into what's going to happen with the 2-parter. I haven't read the graphic novel, I guess I should.

OfflineOoh how intriguing. I must have scanned the graphic novel because for some reason I knew I had heard the name Clara Strike, but did not put 2+2 together. Maybe that's why the maths at the end of each post catches me sometimes
.
I am off to go reread the graphic novel.
Thank you to all of you for your amazing attention to detail.

I think you are probably close, Leftfield. I think they are looking to move the graphic novel in a certain way. Or maybe they were treating it as a one shot. I'm also thinking that, at the time it came out during Heroes and Villains, there was a certain message they were trying to get across to the audience (and Castle to Beckett possibly) and the graphic novel did that very well. And the Storm character became a CIA agent as a result of the death of Strike in the graphic novel, much like the journey Beckett made with her mother, so there was another aspect of the remade Storm that may have been done on purpose.
And the bold part? As with Joss Whedon and the Firefly characters, I am in dire need of these full length novels and lots of them!
