Very sad to see such a dip in the ratings.

yes, but they still won the time slot. i have no doubt castle will be around for more seasons to come. they had one rough nite in the ratings. lets wait til the season's getting closer to the finish to call a season 5 or not. (which i hope they will!)

I for one love the show, but honestly I have to say aside from the season opener the rest of the shows have been lackluster at best.

I guess I'm just dumb because seeing 10 million+ viewers seems to be great for any show, yet the ratings are low. I think it's been explained to me before but I still don't get it. Rationally it seems like the viewers would be what's important. I'm by no means worried, I just understand the actual system

Why is the key demo that important? I don't get it. We beat H5O in total viewers, isn't that taken into account at all??
Some people in the comments, on tvbythenumbers, said it was because of MNF, and because of House that aired in the 10pm slot exceptionally. So… hopefully, next week's ratings will be up.

apparently the 18-34 demographic determines if a show is successful. Therefore the 2.1 that castle received last night is REALLY bad. The networks focus on 18-34 viewers.

The demo needs to be expanded because my parents looooooove Castle and my dad just turn 54. And I know they're not the only 34+ viewers out there. But again I don't understand how the number of viewers seems to get lost in the shuffle.

Last night was a crazy night for television, though. With MLB going into overtime earlier that day, many FOX shows got shifted, which meant House aired opposite Castle, which normally doesn't happen. On top of that, Detroit didn't even air Castle in their area thanks to Monday Night Football. Sports are big at this time of year, and sadly enough, it does affect Castle, especially when it's pre-empted by local sports.
While the ratings do leave a bad taste in my mouth, I think we should wait a few more weeks. We're still winning the hour in total viewers, which is something I do like to see. Also, when Punked aired last year, it got 10.655 million viewers, and we got 10.230 million viewers last night. That's not even a 4% drop in total viewers, for another perspective. IMO, so long as we keep at least 10 million viewers, we're doing decent.

I wouldn't write Castle off because of one week's numbers. As was said above, the magic demo may have been down, but the viewership is still there. I personally think the show is getting better and better and am absolutely thrilled that someone like Andrew Marlowe is at the helm. He seems to understand both the artistic *and* the marketing aspects of the business giving us the best of both worlds. For all the grumbling about this or that direction the show has taken this season, those same people still seem to be watching and more are watching this year. That's the trend I want to see and I'm betting that is one of the trends that TPTB is looking at too.

The conventional wisdom is that the 18-34 group's spending is more likely swayed by the advertising, while older (like me) have more settled spending habits.

The more I think about the more I think sporting events are affecting ALL ratings across the networks. So as someone else said, let's wait and see what post-playoff ratings look like. When you think about sports it it's key demo is probably 18-34 too.

Good point! And the numbers were down pretty much across the board. Castle maintained, and I think may have slightly gained in total number of viewers from year-to-date last year and we still had the most viewers of the hour, so there is 'bright side'.
