OfflineAll things considered from the previous week, this rating is a nice one, despite it being down in numbers. Their rating is just as high, or close enough, to most new shows and better than many returning—and a 6 share isn't shabby at all. Plus the overall viewers is relatively high. Hopefully the many repeats coming at us this month can get a whole new group of people watching and the ratings will boost even more!

OfflineWhat about iTunes? Does that count? I usually buy and watch from there the morning after the show airs and watch at lunch.

OfflineIt's funny how many (not here of course) act like this was the first episode that Castle didn't have DWTS as a lead in. Completely forgetting that the last new one drew its highest numbers. While it's possible those new viewers didn't like what they saw that's too much of a dramatic drop to say it's dependent on DWTS as a lead in.
I forgot about some people losing power due to storms and some affliates airing rememberances specials on top of the football game airing in a couple major markets.
Castle had a serious gain out of a terrible lead in and I'm sure ABC took notice.
Here's the final numbers though:
Castle
- 7.804 million viewers
- 5.1/9 HH
- 2.1/5 A18-49

OfflineSo Glee (a show which everyone talks about) only had 8 million viewers last night. That made me happy for some reason (even though I love Glee!)
Happy because Castle usually gets into the 9 million viewer range!

OfflineI'm sad for the lower numbers but what everyone has been saying about other shows, power outages, not being aware of a new episode etc seem very plausible. The air dates schedule was a bit strange. Personally I enjoy Glee, but I don't quite understand what the full extent of the hype is about. It's a good show, but it's not as good (in my lowly opinion) as everyone seems to think that it is! The songs are catch and pretty awesome of course, but some of the plots are just plain uninteresting and kinda silly. Does anyone else think this or is it just me? In other words I'd much rather watch a new Castle than a new Glee

Of course I'd rather watch a new Castle then a new Glee, but I enjoy the music. The plots, well yeah, they sometimes suck, but I choose to adore the music!

The music is definitely great! I even like the characters a lot, I just don't quite understand the obsessions particularly when one of the main components of a good show that I look for is in the quality of the plots. But nevertheless as stated, the music is sweet!

OfflineI think Glee is kind of like Castle in the fact that the show brings in a bunch of exposure through other media (songs on iTunes and in CDs, book(s!) for Castle). But probably music is more accessible to a bigger audience than a book is and that's why Glee is more popular. Glee is also a very unique show that's broadcast today, it's basically a musical every week with amazing young singers, whereas Castle fits more neatly into a procedural box, even though we all know just how special Castle is. Also, Glee is about a bunch of teenagers and sort of soap opera-ry (I like Glee, so I don't think that the description is a bad thing), which usually brings in a big audience, whereas I think Castle is geared towards an audience that is more into witty jokes and banter and mysteries and an adult relationship.
But anyway, back on topic, the ratings weren't awesome for this week (but not terrible), but I'm thinking that ABC will hype up the Alyssa Milano stuff and so the casual viewer will be able to find out when it comes back with new episodes.

I so hope they try to bring in Alyssa Milano fans with promos!

OfflineI called ABC a few days ago about another show of interest on daytime I watch regular to find out if it was going to get an early 6th season renewal and talked to a nice woman in programing. I thought she'd give me about 3 minutes of her time but we ended up taliking for 40 mins. She said she'd been with ABC for 40 years. She told me how the ratings work and how Tivo and DVR ratings only work for a slim amount of ratings. They still use the old journal way of ratings where people write down what they watch every day and it goes from Thursday throughThursday. They are still selected at random by calling homes and asking if they would like to be ratings family. She said they have long been trying to work on a new ratings system, you know place a chip in every Television set, but then she said you deal with internet users who watch online and those who have cable and so on, still don't have a good ratings system. She did tell me which shows ABC thinks are doing well and Castle was one she felt was not a problem she said it had started out weak for them and then picked up steam when a lot of ABC shows tanked. That they feel it is doing much better and she said they were pleased with it. She said not to worry about reruns this is expected to drop in ratings and not do as well during the holidays so ABC even though they rate reruns they expect lower ratings at this time of year. She also said that reruns never do good for shows such as Lost or Flash Forward they arn't the type of shows people want to watch in reruns. She said due to cost less episodes being ordered up and with shows such as LOST they like to completely take it off the air rather then show a new episode then five repeats. She said Castle was given an extra chance as it began as a mid season replacement. She was very nice and she explained to me about the top 100 hundred cities/markets and if Castle is strong in the top 100 then they usually pick up for another season. Anything over 100 is considered a local market city say Santa Barbara is market 121 it has a smaller viewing market then NYC which is a top 100 market city, so when ratings come in they look at the larger markets rather then smaller ones. That's how I understood it, she told me of a few shows that looked to be wrapping up but none I watch. I only watch Castle and Lost and Lost is so confusing to me always hard to follow but since it is the last season I want to ride it out until th end since I began watching it from day one. It gets 18 full episodes with no rerns and a two hour season opener in early Feb. Some shows before hand to remind people what happened last season.
I would love to see a two hour Castle I think it would bring in new fans such as myself. I tried Castle last season for first show and then left, came back with season 2, episode 1 and was hooked. Ran out and bought season 1 on DVD and have watched the episodes three times through thus far. If they can pick up a lot of viewers this sason after this holiday break they will get another season of full episodes she said.
I would love to see Chuck Bowman come on Castle and direct he is my favorite director. He is Rob Bowman's Dad is a super director.
I hope this information is of use to someone here. According to the lady I spoke with ABC is behind Castle at least for this season and she implied next season was looking good.
