Third, I had a slight problem with the casting of Beckett's dad. I didn't realize what it was 'til I watched it again. I didn't get the feel of devastation Johanna's death caused him, nor the fact that he was an alcoholic. I almost wanted him to have tears in his eyes when he said, "And for years, I thought she was wrong, because I couldn't handle losing her." Then he kind of catches himself, smiles and says the next line. Definitely would have made for a more emotional impact. Someone mentioned that the scene was weak in terms of dialogue and acting, I thought the dialogue was fine. It suited them (Kate and her dad). Liked the end where they talk about Johanna saying how life never gives you anything you can't handle and how this might be Johanna's way of reachin' out to Beckett, very touching.

Thoughts, anyone??

I had the same kind of reaction at first to the scene, but upon a second viewing I think the actor (and director) made the right choice in going for the quiet approach. Jim Beckett is a man who, unlike Kate, has dealt with his demons and come to terms with them. He’s there for his daughter, to comfort and counsel. I think to get all worked up would only soften her resolve instead of strengthening it.

I liked the actor they picked as well; he looks like he could be her dad.

I have to add that that I love that line; “because you’re tall”. It has so many connotations.

The most obvious is that it’s a joke, but it also means she always stands “Tall”.

No matter the situation she doesn’t take the easy road and gets what needs to be done, done.

What's really impressive is how these stable of writers know and love these characters so well that every decision and line has so many layers.

Love when networks program shows that prove they don't have to "dumb down" the shows to reach a viable audience."

Really?

Does the C stand for condescending?

There are essentially two groups of thought on this episode. Those of us that thought it was mediocre and those that were "like totally wow". I feel they(the producers and writer, shame on you Will) followed the "formula" on the episode and in hind site should have streached it a bit.Important scenes were made bland and condensed. The scene with Beckett's father.I believe this is the first time we have seen him on the series and I for one thought he should get more air time. Both quantity and quality were sacrificed on the character. The scene of Beckett showing up at Castle's home was also poorly done IMHO.The one well done scene in my opinion was when Castle told Beckett he chose her as his inspiration because she was "tall".The famous final scene was, again in my humble opinion, poorly done and totally out of character for the episode and the series overall.

Several of us feel this way and it's not because we "don't get it" or that the network has to "dumb down"to reach certain segments of the viewing audience. We simply wish for the writers to take a more adult path with these two vital, energetic, smart and sexy people.

That doesn't mean we don't like the show and will quit watching if we don't get our way.We will continue to hope for an upgrade in the writing to a more "adult" level.I'll admit I love the humor and character interaction 99% of the time. That's why i'm a fan and on this site.

I ask that you give a few of us some credit for knowing what we want to see in this series and not because we "don't get it" and are not "the right people". Smile' class='wp-smiley' />

And that's your right Moby (meaning all of you who feel that way). But I think they ARE taking the adult path. You want them jumping in and out of bed already? That's what immature people do. Mature adults who want a relationship to work and be about more than sex don't just rush into it. They take the time to allow the feelings to grow and they understand there is no need to rush into anything. There is no doubt that there are feelings there, and they've both admitted it. Their relationship will progress but it will be the way a mature relationship progresses.

The writers and producers have done an incredible job up until now and I have every faith that they will continue to do so. I personally don't feel that they need to "upgrade" their writing at all. If you want an "adult" show then you can switch over to cable, there are tons of them where you can get your fix.

———————————————————–

That is just it however… What seems to vary here is what "adult" means. You've said on many occaasions that you feel they should just be in bed already. To me, that isn't really "adult". That is horny teenager in the back of dad's car. I think that they two fo them are building a relationship. There is an attraction and a chemistry, but K & R are developing more of a foundation. They're getting to know one another and delving deeper in to the layers they both have. I think they've admitted there are feelings there, they care for one another, it is something.

I absolutely don't want season upon season of UST but I love the bond these two have developed. It is simply beautiful. I think the big difference here is the way in which one views a mature relationship. To me, adults who want an actual relationship generally are not jumping in the sack at the slightest sign of attraction.

As it is, with the way the writers have set this up, I think that once they do finally get together, there will have been a foundation that has been put in to place for the show to continue in a solid way and in a way that will allow the story to build more.

Could I possibly be more misunderstood? I don't think so! I certainly do not wish my view of "ADULT" be construed as pornographic or overtly sexual. I am a romantic at heart. Two normal healthy adults that are as attracted as Beckett and Castle should move it to the "grown up" level. That doesn't mean I want them doing the deed on the show buy they could steal a kiss in the elevator or give a meaningful hug in a private moment and let us draw our own conclusions about the sexual side of it.That's all I want to convey. Sandy, you and IMW and all the rest are intitled to your opinion and I agree with where you are comming from. Please allow the rest of us ours.
IMW,adults that want an actual relationship do jump in the sack all the time.
That dosen't mean that I feel that's the direction the show should take.
Try to understand where I'm comming from. Thanks!!

Well to take this is a different direction, and since everyone on here is so good at speculating and extrapolating, what do you think Castle meant when he said "this reminds me of my second wedding", while at Johnny Vong's show?  His publisher ex-wife seemed pretty fancy and uptight, so how do you think his second wedding was similar?

I was trying to figure out the comment about the second wedding as well. A tacky reception hall and Johnny Vong-esque emcee didn't really fit with what we saw of Gina. But the comment made me laugh either way.

I'm torn on the issue of Beckett's and Castle's relationship.  To this point, I am happy with the pace of the show and the progression (or lack of) the writers are taking with the characters.  Partly, the building is so exciting and it gives the viewers something big to which to look forward.  Also, because Castle still knows so little about Beckett and thus the viewers.  I want to see him peel back the 'Beckett layers'.  What was she going to be if not a cop?  Who is she when she is not a cop?  When she is not in the precinct? I need to see that. Frankly, I like seeing the friendship develop and I think the last episode cemented the fact that they are friends.  Really good, hot for each other friends.Love

That's not to say that I don't want to be teased a little…to have a glimpse of what is to come.  Maybe a steamy sex scene via a dream sequence.  However, when that big moment does happen, and we know it will, let it be done right.

I have to say, I hope they don't actually go with a dream sequence. Bones managed to just make me angry with that. I think they can give us little bits of affection and then when it is ready to happen, let it actually happen. Dream sequences are often just such a cop out for tv (imho.)
I definitely would love to get to know more about KB as well. I'd also love to see a bit more of her with Lanie. I like the dynamic the two have, even though we haven't seen a whole lot of it.

You're probably right, but it would be nice to see Beckett get all hot and bothered over Castle.

As for her and Lanie, I absolutely agree.  I posted this earlier but that was one of my beef's with this episode. I thought there should have been a more best friend moment between the two.

Also, FBI guy, whatever happened to him?  I know that he and Beckett had some unresolved feelings.  There is still a lot of ground to cover on this show.

Also agree with IMW on the dream love sequence. Not for Rick and Kate. When it happens let it happen.

Seems we all want to get to the same place, just at a different pace. We also express it differently.

I believe we all want them to be in love with each other and we want to see the obvious affection that people in love show each other. jmhoSmile

…or maybe Castle felt like he was walking on hot coals in his marriage? :D

I haven't posted on this episode yet… just want to say – I liked it. Love

No, I want to say more Crazy

Montgomery: "You are the finest homicide I've ever trained, bar none."
- we knew that, but nice to get it confirmed :)

JB: So, what have you found?
KB: I don't know yet.
JB: But enough to scare you?
KB: Yeah.
-she readily admits to being scared. Doesn't need to toughen up for her dad, that's nice. Seems they've fought through the loss, and come out stronger together, tighter. But the fight is not finished for Beckett until the killers are caught.
She's not scared of much, is she? Staring down that Irish mobster like nothing. But failing to solve her mother's case, that's what scares her the most.

Some of you wanted a moment of "yes! got him" when she shot the contract killer. I don't see it that way at all. For Beckett the real killers are those who hired him, he was just their weapon. So after she shot, we do have a moment, but the moment is her standing frozen as she realizes she just lost her best lead. Then she must have sprung into action – perhaps it wasn't too late yet… Cry

About the pigtails – I think the maturity level of her response fittet the maturity level of Castle perfectly. He's sometimes 9, sometimes 12, and has not courted her in a grown-up fashion at all (except bringing her coffee). But what she's saying, in my opinion, is "Stay. Keep asking for my attention. I see you." Love

I wish I knew how to quit you.

When I watched this episode for the first time, my thoughts were why isn't Lanie there when Beckett comes out of the capts. office? When Beckett enters his office Lanie has crossed the room and is standing next to Castle. What a missed chance for those two to discuss what is going on with Beckett, they are the two people closest to Beckett. When Beckett reemerges Lanie is gone. ( We don't see her again in the episode) I would think as her BFF she would want to be there to talk to her as girlfriends and be there in case she needed to talk. Castle calls out to Kate and calls her Kate for the first time without using the last name attached or isn't joking. We know he is worried about her and where is she going, I didn't see any signs from Kate that she even heard him call her Kate. Maybe she made a reaction I just didn't see anything. It would have been nice if she had looked back at him, maybe stopped for a moment then kept going just a touch of knowing she heard him call her Kate.

Funny thing is here we all are thrilled he has called her Kate, just one word and we are all melted Castle viewers, cracks me up how hooked we are on this show. Think about the first time one of them ever gets to the point of an endearment name for the other we will all need Castle CPR~

I am with Moby Dick on this one, I want them to touch and to kiss and to feel love, it doesn't have to be slam bam get in bed but I want to see the small things, a touch of the hand, maybe hand holding. I want a hug or a tender kiss on the cheek. I want it, and I won't apologize for wanting it. I have spent 30 years watching TV shows that usually 100 percent of the time leave the viewer falling way short with investing years into a show and waiting until a finale to get a couple together or to leave them hanging in the air for TV eternity.

I want them to get to know each other They can be mature and kiss, that's how I feel. Their relationship can grow and at the same time I don't want it to take three more seasons before they kiss or hold hands. I don't want any dreams played out where the one dreams of the other, been there on to many shows. I don't want to be taken back in time with Will or Castle's ex's coming around to try and get between them, I don't want some new people to come in and date them while we watch week after week of them dating others. I want them to grow with each episode , love when they bicker and spark then get closer.

One thing that many of us here want it to go slow, take their time, nothing wrong with that but on the flip side Castle is always the play boy and sees and wants the girls. Beckett is the one who likes long term and isn't jumping from man to man. Castle is a man who has had many women so it is amusing to listen to us say take it slow it's to soon for them to kiss, hold hands and hug! This guy has been around, Beckett dated Will for six months, yet here they are taking a year and a half, as we know time has passed and they have yet to kiss, hold hands, hug! I know we all want them together some now some later we all are pretty much here to see the couple blossom, romance it's what brings me back each week. So in saying this I want them to find that they are each others "The one" So if it takes a while to get there I am fine with that too, I just don't think it is realistic of Castle's past to say it is to soon for him and Beckett to kiss. As far as Beckett she is scared to commit to someone like Castle because she knows he could really destroy her if he leaves her so she is taking it very slow to protect herself. He is learning there is no woman out there like her and he is scared to death he will blow it and lose her.

I love these two I want them to find one another and not before I am to old to care!

See, my take on that was that she was choosing to ignore. I know that when I'm upset about something, someone can call my name and I hear them but I ignore them completely. I just assumed that it was the same for Kate in that scene. I actually thought it was perfectly played given what she'd just found out. She needed time and she did go to him when she was ready. :)

P.S When the time comes and it will, we will truly see how Castle feels about Kate. When she was in that bar in the face of the Irish guy. We know the time will come in the series that Kate gets hurt, maybe shot, maybe hit in the face.(I hope not but this is TV) Castle is going to come unglued. He will in time I think worry about her getting hurt, he just is.

itsmyworld – That is a good take on that scene, see when we discuss we can see things from points of views and it explains to us what we might not understand when watching an episode we all read it differently.

I am slow with what the meaning of the song was at the end. It was a good song but what was it saying to us in a nutshell. I usually get the song tie in to the show, I have tried to listen to the lyrics but I get to watching Kate and then have to keep rewinding. What did the song mean? Please someone fill me in.
Thank you.

Really?

Does the C stand for condescending?

Wow.  No.  Sorry you misread my intentions in that post.

When I said "the right people will get it" it was a call back to the show Mystery Science Theater 3000.  In that show, the writers used to get notes from Com Central execs about the number of jokes they used and the types of jokes they used.  The execs wanted the writers to use fewer simpler jokes that "everybody" would get.  The writers (The Brains, as they called themselves) refused to dumb down their jokes (not that they never had dumb jokes or immature ones, those were just few and far between).  The Brains knew their fans were smart and wrote to that target.

I was merely putting the Castle writers in that group.  The writing is smart.  The jokes and throw away lines that are in every episode (regardless of how "good" or "mediocre" the plots may be) are smart and targeted to the fans, who are also smart.

All of the shows I mentioned in that post are smartly written.  And unless you are someone who thinks that "Wife Swap"  is the pinnacle of Television and "The Jerry Springer Show" is hard hitting investigative journalism,  you are going to appreciate and enjoy those shows, too.

I don't think its condescending to assume the fans of these shows are intelligent (ie "the right people") Sorry if you felt like that was my point.

My take on "The End" for Pam.

What were all those dreams we shared those many years ago,

What were all those plans we made, now left beside the road.

Behind us in the road.

–Couple, family, someone make plans for the future, some of which never made it to fruition.

More than friends, I always pledge, because friends they come and go,

People change as does everything, I wanted to grow old,

I just want to grow old.

–More than friends = lovers or possibly husband/wife. Looking forward to growing old with the person, wanting to make plans for the future come to fruition.

Slide on next to me, I’m just a human being,

I will take the blame, but just the same, this is not me, you see, believe,

I’m better than this – don’t leave me so close,

–Mistakes have been made, they've been through/are going through tough times. Human refers to not being perfect, but stay with me. I believe 'don't leave me so close' is more of a metaphore for emotional distance.

I’m buried beneath the stones,

I just want to hold on and know I’m worth your love,

and I, don’t think, there’s such a thing.

–Whatever mistake has been made, the person wants to know that they are still worthy of their love and just wants to be loved but is unsure if they'll make it back from what happened. Vunerability with the person they love.

It’s my fault now, I've been caught, a sickness in my bones.

How do you think it is to leave you here with the kids on your own,

Just don’t let me go.

–Karma is coming back around.

Help me see myself,

because I can no longer tell

Looking up from inside of the bottom of a well, it’s Hell

–I'm more iffy on this. If you want to take it literally, the illness is becoming worse and the person is dying, losing themself.

I yell, but no one hears before, I disappear, whisper in my ear.

Give me something to echo in my unknown future,

you see, my dear, the end, comes near, I’m here, but not much longer.

There is also what sounds like a final breath after the words end.

–Fear, yelling inside. Hoping for comfort before he dies/disappears. The final breath is death, symbolizing a literal passing or moving on to a new chapter.

Thank you to Itsmyworld.
I sometimes don't get the ties ins and other times I do. I wasn't sure what it all meant.
It was a haunting song to me. Loved when they showed the water and buildings of NYC as they cut to later scene of Beckett sitting I might add in a fun way in her seat instead of all work. She was relaxed and I wasn't sure when we saw her again if she would be all stressed out so it was a pleasant surprise to see her calm, smiling, reading and welcoming to Castle not all upset and angry. It was a nice close to the episode and with the song. I loved how she sat in the chair and her hair and her clothes not all so – so business looking as usual. She has gone through a lot in those few days it was nice to see her taking it all in and not letting it take her down. Castle bringing the different foods showed how thoughtful he was being to her with getting all different kinds of foods to please her and comfort her. He can bring me food any time!

it is perfectly possible to LOVE this show and yet still view it a little more objectively, as moby has said.

Regarding the show – ok , the thaw has occurred, albeit in an imperefct way which I personally found a bit too fey.

(To also restate – a touch of the hand was what I wished for – not some scene from Soft Core Central…heh)

It might be helpful to know what the literal time-line of the show is. I mean we have been watching these two grown people for 23 episodes now, right? Is that 2 years in tv time? Or six months?

Does anyone know how long they have actually known each other?

I call for less *squeeeee!*, more - *Thud*!
