I don't understand why kate's Mom was targeted and murdered. Was she an official of some kind?? Why would anyone go to the trouble of assassinating a housewife?? Did I miss something?

She wasn't a housewife. She used to teach law. And we still don't know why she was killed. That's why it was so intense that KB ended up killing the man with the info on who wanted her dead.

Becklers do it with the beckle on.

She isn't a housewife as Sarah said.
We're waiting for the "Why" as well. Hopefully they'll feed us a bit of new information soon.

Yeah as Sarah said that was why that scene was so intense and she had such a decision to make. We ourselves still have no idea why he wanted her dead. I'm glad they didn't solve EVERYTHING in one episode. That would've been disappointing.

This is driving me nuts too. I was expecting them to go the serial killer route not hitman. I mean, yeah she taught law but what could she have done for someone to go so far as to hire an ex marine to strategically take her out? I know we're not supposed to know that much right now but they could at least give us a little more background on her mom. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't we only find out that she taught law because Castle said it quickly in the season two premiere? I think they can give us more than that!

She was a law professor so likely also a lawyer. If she was an ADA or something of that nature, it would make a lot of sense…

She would have almost undoubtedly had a career practicing law before becoming a law professor, and as IMW said, could have been a prosecutor. Though even as a defense attorney she could have come up against someone who would want retribution for something. I don't know why I lean toward her having practiced criminal law but I do. Granted she could have taught a subject for which practical experience would not be required, but all of my professors in law school had practiced (and some still practiced) law at some point before becoming professors.

Rewatching the episode last night, Beckett says that her mom was putting together an appeal for Pulgatti.  We know that Raglan and the other two clowns killed the FBI agent and Pulgatti took the fall.  If Pulgatti told her about this in his letter to her (prompting her appeal) then Johanna and everyone working with her on the appeal (law clerk etc) knew all about the real way it went down.

Raglan and the other two most likely didnt come up with the kidnapping idea themselves.  So busting them would expose "the dragon".  By Killing Johanna and the other 3 working on her, the only person willing to help Pulgatti is out of the picture.

Bottom line, I think we already know why she was killed in its simplest sense.  Who ordered it and why they didnt want the conspiracy outed, I think is really what Beckett is after now.
