OfflineObservations while rewatching Boom!
I’m a bit tardy posting this… Went to see Deathly Hallows Part II again last night, and I could go see it again. But this isn’t about that, either.
This was the conclusion of first two-parter for us, and one of the most popular of the series.
I’m still bugged by Rick’s stopping from a full-tilt run just the moment before Kate’s apartment blew up.
But the moment after, he looks lost, at the thought of losing Kate.
How DID she survive? The tub would protect her from flying debris & shrapnel, but not from the pressure wave. At best, she would be temporarily deafened.
And she is still able to kid with Rick about his not bragging about breaking down the door. But he isn’t in the mood for it, because of the seriousness of the situation.
When Jordan tells Kate that she is off the case, they lock horns briefly, but not in an unfriendly way. They do understand each other.
When Jordan asks what tipped her off, and Kate says that it was Rick who figured it out, she is looking at him with admiration. I don’t remember seeing that look before.
In Conrad’s apartment, and later at the station, Jordan, Kate and Rick seem to be working well together.
When Rick gets home, we see Alexis & Martha express concern for his safety the first time. He only downplays it a little, as the killer is after “Nikki Heat”, not him.
Kate’s “If you keep quoting Jordan Shaw…” comment to Rick shows that she isn’t carrying any jealousy for his attentions any longer.
When Jordan is profiling the killer, she tells Rick, “You also kill people for a living…. In your books.”
When they find and enter Dunn’s apartment, Kate looks very uncomfortable. Rick notices and looks concerned for her state of mind.
Jordan & Kate are talking about Rick, as if he cannot hear them. I liked Kate’s “He has the attention span of a cocker spaniel” followed by Jordan’s “And the loyalty”
Later, after Jordan kick’s Kate off the case, and she says she has no home, then Rick says “yes you do”, is this the only time she actually obeys Captain’s “That’s an order!”? She didn’t even offer up Lanie’s apartment as an alternative.
Wonderful symmetry in the cooking breakfast scenes. Rick cooking in Kate’s place, Kate cooking at Rick’s. And Martha doesn’t seem all that surprised to see her there.
At the warehouse, when Rick says “this is wrong.” Kate picks up on his seriousness. She trusts his insights when he gets serious, and can explain his thoughts in a reasonable way.
Kate giving her backup gun to Rick shows the level of trust she has in him. She has seen him under fire (Always Buy Retail) and has seen that he can be an excellent shot (Home is Where the Heart Stops). But the next time she does it, Captain Roy wants her to explain “How Castle got your gun.” (A Deadly Affair).
Rick saves her life again. And will yet again.
Finally, she tells Kate that Rick cares for her. How many times does she need to be told? She has put her life in his hands, but is still holding her heart back…

OfflineThis episode is hard to top for me, at least among the dramatic themed favorites. Written by Elizabeth Davis and Directed by John Terlesky. Interestingly both parts of the two parter Tick, Tick, Tic and Boom had female writers and they both knocked it out of the park IMO.
We have hero Rick knocking down the door but with a nice “Castle” touch; it’s hot and it’s hurts, which it would. Luckily Kate is alive and well in the life saving bathtub. One of the few changes I would make to this episode is one extra line of dialogue, as Castle is helping Kate down the hallway, he asks if she is OK and she replies yes and it must be killing him not to launch into his hero’s tale; I would have liked one extra “are you sure you’re OK? – alright should I start at the beginning?-” For me the danger of the situation is just rushed through a little too quickly. But that’s one small quibble in forty-two great minutes of television.
It’s a lovely touch as Castle pats his pocket as he tells Kate that her Dad’s watch was not in the hall. I really love the look of pride that Kate gives Castle when telling Jordan Shaw that it was Castle who worked out Dunn was not dead, thus saving Beckett’s life.
The news was on the TV in the loft as Castle returns home, we don’t often see that. I enjoy “Boom” more than “Tick” because this is Beckett back on surer ground and feeling confident enough to play “and if you keep quoting Jordan I’m going to turn the radio way up” “Jealous”. Her unease about Shaw has gone and has been replaced by confidence in her own abilities and a openness to new methods. “OK now I’m officially impressed.” I love the subtle expression Stana gives when seeing the banner in the bar “buck up Castle” lovely work from SK.
Nathan was great as Castle watches Beckett as she looks at Dunn’s collage of Nikki Heat and Murder. “all this over a dam book”. Yep lots of stuff happens in this show over a dam book. Interestingly Castle follows them all into the room but does not have a vest on.
Love the scene in the mobile unit, Castle with the concentration span of a Cocker Spaniel, and the loyalty as well as Shaw notes. “This unorthodox partnership works well for you “is it enough” she asks, “For now” Beckett reply’s, humm. And when Beckett chasses Dunn, again no vest, nor would she or Castle have vests later when they enter the warehouse.
Did Shaw come down a little too hard on Beckett, I think so, but as it led to the delightful loft scenes, I forgive her. Both the evening with Rick (with his RC coffee mug), it would have been fun to see the mug in Kate’s hands. And the morning scene with Martha were both spot on IMO.
The trust that became evident in “Boom” was the significant point of the episode for me. Beckett trusts Castle enough to encourage him to voice his ‘out of the box’ theory’s. She trusts him with her second gun, to be her back up, against regulation and some would say good sense. That was huge!
Also interesting that Kate will claim Nikki to get the job done. “I beat you, Nikki Heat won.” And we get one of my favorite lines in the show ever, “you have the right to remain silent, so shut the hell up”. Love it! and again we have a very Beckett compliment “hell of a shot Castle”; the thanks came through loud and clear.
At the end of the episode Beckett’s acceptance of Shaw is complete, “I learned a lot from you on this one” and “see you around”. And then the very true statement from Shaw that what happened was both heroic and poetic as Nikki Heat did indeed catch Dunn for she is “part you, part Castle”, indeed she is. Then we have thoughtful Rick and the lovely moment presenting the watch, a touching moment, and then Castle deflects somewhat with concern for his back!
The episode should have ended here, we really did not need the final loft scene with Alexis and Martha, IMO it added nothing and I would have preferred to fade out on Castle’s precinct family, not his home one. I love “Boom”.

I think he was "shocked" to her the "Goodbye Nikki … beep …. beep …. beep" through his phone, that's why he stopped —-> and Nathan had to stay a safe distance from the blast that was very real.[Image Can Not Be Found]

OfflineI like Dana Delany here. It's too bad she got her own show and won't be able to reprise the role of Jordan Shaw. She'd have made a good boss/mentor for Beckett. Shaw's profile of Castle is also interesting. He gets the same magazines and has similarities with a serial killer because he kills people for a living in his fiction. It's a theme that shows up again in the Triple Killer episode. Under other circumstances, Castle might have been a killer.
I thought the exchange between Beckett and Castle was interesting when she says she has no home and he wants her to stay with him. You get a hint of the no nonsense, grown-up Castle here, the same seriousness he had in the episode where he told Alexis they had to call her drunken friend's parents. When something really matters, when he really wants something done, Castle makes sure it gets done and he is not used to being turned down. The childish, frivolous playboy is a facade.
Beckett, the independent, closed off loner doesn't want to be dependent on Castle and doesn't want the intimacy of staying with him. That's all in her voice: "Thank you, Castle, but I COULDN'T." Castle (implacable): "You can and you will." Beckett tosses him a look of anger/disbelief/annoyance/surprise. Then Montgomery backs up Castle: "Consider it an ORDER." Checkmate. Beckett would have kept fighting on principle, but Montgomery is right that she's exhausted and vulnerable and has nowhere else to go. His order gives her an excuse to take Castle's offer and she goes home with Castle. Then you have the symmetry of Castle staying with Beckett at her apartment and making her breakfast and Beckett doing the same at Castle's apartment, talking with Castle and his mother about how her mother used to make her breakfast. She's relaxed a bit and let them into her private world.
You also see the contrast between Castle's upbringing and Beckett's. Beckett had a loving mother who indulged her by serving up three or four different kinds of breakfast on Sunday morning; Martha was neglectful and exposed Castle to inappropriate role models. Castle loves his mother, but there's a bit of an edge when he talks to her and it's clear that she was not the most attentive parent. Martha is dismissive of his complaints.
