He's a good shot when he isn't nervous or in a stressful situation- that's what I attribute it to.
I agree.

I agree, it's harder to think straight when you're stressed. He probably hasn't done it enough so that shooting is more second nature, so his poor shot probably attributes to the pressured situation.
In watching Boom, I'm thinking that Dunn's hand with gun was almost directly in front of his head from Castle's point of view.
That's my story…and I'm sticking to it! (even if it's not so)
Castle still is a great shot, in spite of last night's episode.

It's from the first episode:
[Jayne takes out Crow with leg shot]
Mal:
Nice shot!
[sitting on the floor, drugged] I was aiming for his head.
Totally got that! It would've been funnier if we hadn't learned Castle was a good shot.
Thats exactly why I was disappointed with that line. He got what he was aiming for. If they wanted any chance for that to be believable they shouldnt have aired that first season two days before.
Oh well

OfflineThe funny thing with that was I did a story years with two guys basically in a Mexican standoff, the bad guy holding a hostage, and the good guy shoots the bad guy in the head and had a similar line. Here is the quote from my story [Clocktowers and Pawn Shops, Chapter 27 (posted Feb. 18, 2004)]
Doctor Herbert Ingles breathed a sigh of relief and then approached Dante to say, “Thank you very much… that was an impressive shot. I’d shake your hands, but these handcuffs prevent that.”
Dante replied dispassionately, “Don’t be impressed, Pops… I was aiming for his gun hand.”
When I heard the line in Firefly, I thought "I liked that one better than mine" and then when it was said on Castle, it took me a while to figure out where I heard it and then it clicked in.
Ashes to ashes,
DJ Pheonyx
