Observations while rewatching Wrapped up in Death

This was a lighter episode to bring us down gently after Tick and Boom, and is a little of a cross between Indiana Jones and Scooby-Doo, complete with references to them.

During the first scene at Castle’s apartment, it looks like Alexis is working out some frustration with the time and attention her dad is giving Beckett. It’s a cute scene, but if she was really feeling that, it should have lasted longer, into the next few family scenes.

At the crime scene, one thing I noticed was Kate’s controlling actions. When Ryan holds up the apartment key, she not only grabs it, but even says “I do.” She does have control issues that she expresses humorously, but she has not really dealt with them yet.

When Rick gets excited about going to the museum, his boyish charm is in full display, prompting a comment from Kate that she forgets that he has the capacity for pure innocence. Well, it’s not always ‘pure’ innocence. This reminded me of a similar line in Retail, when she sees Rick acting like a real dad.

I liked seeing Rick play with the Indy hat, and the lift controls. Some day, that curiosity may bite him, it sure provides humorous moments as well as insights into his personality. That inquisitiveness is a vital part of the what keeps his character fresh and interesting.

A few moments later, we see Rick & Kate sitting together, staring at the murder board. That looks to me like their version of sitting on a porch swing.

With the whole team playing pranks on Rick, using “the curse” as cover, shows how fully he has been accepted into the station.

There was Ryan asking Esposito “Can I drive?”, and a few minutes later Rick asking Kate the same thing. They both get the same answer.

After the dog attack, Rick looks reluctant to try the chair again, even though Kate has admitted to sabotaging it before. Then with the elevator incident, he is convinced that there’s something going on that he cannot explain any other way.

As he is reviewing his will, we can read his legal name as “Richard Edgar Castle”. He has legally changed his name, it is not just a pen name for his books. When he asks Martha to look after Alexis better than she did for him, it’s almost redundant – she is far more stable now than she was then.

Then there was the Scooby-Doo reference. Does Kate really see herself as Velma – the super-brainy, somewhat nerdy girl? She should know that she is far too attractive for that. But when Rick says she is more like Daphne “You’re hot, smart, not aggressively brainy, but long legs short skirt…” She tells him to stop. Now. But she does not refute him.

I could go on, but this time, I will leave that for whoever else wants to add their thoughts.

All in all, a light, entertaining episode.

Yes this is a nice filler episode, I like seeing how observant Beckett and Esposito are in the victims apartment and who doesn’t love Ryan.

Beckett is reading Castle well here “either you’re being a good cop or you just want to go to the museum” Castle goes with the Dinosaurs.

Again we have Beckett impressed with Castle and saying so when he talks of visiting the museum with Alexis, and he immediately deflects again. “and then you open your mouth and you ruin it” yes he does, repeatedly.

Castle is there as a consultant and he is a good one but it says something about his position on the team when he and go play ‘Indy’ while Beckett takes care of business. Note she is neither surprised nor annoyed that he has done so.

Beckett is such a good straight man. Castle cursed? “you had to tell them didn’t you?” “yes, yes I did” love her face. Plus Beckett with Esposito “he was sleeping with a mummy? Yes, er what no”

Director Bill Roe shot the first interrogation room interview differently than usual, maybe because there were a number of scenes there in this episode.

NF was very good in the cappuccino machine explosion scene “all flash and no damage” and he still cleans up, not sure I would have.  Actually the chair stunt was more dangerous. When Beckett then takes in the fact that Castle is concerned more seriously, and love the way they both played the lift scene.

Love Beckett’s sly glance at Castle’s rear end as he leaves for home.  And the lost Ark gets another mention in this episode.

Fight or Flight, Beckett knows there is no need to run after Stanford. It was a well-blocked scene with Ryan and E just standing there and a good way to get around S.D’s broken leg or whatever it was. And of course Beckett comes through and helps Castle get the answer for the course.  All in all a enjoyable episode by Alexi Hawley.

I remember wondering if the elevator malfunction was another prank when Beckett touches the floor with her foot and makes the elevator ding. It apparently wasn't, though. I'm still not sure if the dog attack was a prank or not. Montgomery's reaction seemed to indicate that it was. Poor Castle. Some of the pranks were verging on the cruel, though it does show that he's been fully accepted as a member of the team. I remember other episodes where he pranks the guys as they did him.

I bet Alexis IS a little disgruntled at how much time Castle spends with Beckett and the police force. It represents a big change in her life. Her dad is around less often and she has more to worry about when it comes to his safety. When Meredith came to pull her out of school in the first season episode, Alexis's first words to the headmaster were 'Is it my dad? Did he get shot?" That was just a few months after Castle started working with Beckett and she was already worrying about what could happen to him. I wonder if she knows he signed away any right for his family to sue if he gets killed in the field? But her scenes are too brief to really develop that arc. I do wonder if Alexis will end up working for the police in some capacity after watching her tomato splattering scene. Maybe she'll be a CSI.

Here we have Castle seriously considering his own mortality in a way he apparently didn't when he signed away his rights and started going into danger with the cops. It's funny that it's a mummy's curse that makes him consider it and not any of the other situations he's put himself in. Meredith is apparently out of the question, since Martha is apparently the designated guardian in Castle's last will and testament. Gina must not have been close enough to Alexis to be considered as a backup to Martha, even though she must have been Alexis's stepmother for a couple of years. Maybe Castle had no other options, since he has no father and at least one of Meredith's parents is dead. I think he's asking Kate to be an unofficial mentor for Alexis, not a formal guardian. It says a lot about how much he trusts Beckett at this point and also how few real friends he really has that he has asked someone he's known less than two years to fill such an important role. Even though he's concerned, it's not enough to stop him from risking his life or taking the chance that Alexis will lose her only stable parent. What Castle is getting from the police involvement — real friendship, a sense of purpose, fun, self esteem — is far too valuable to him.

Castle's relationship with Martha still has some cracks, since he asks Martha to look after Alexis better than she looked after him. He believes she was lacking as a mother. Martha once again dismisses Castle's complaints — "You turned out fine."
