Observations while rewatching The Double Down

I’ve always liked watching this episode. In fact, it is one of my top 10 favorites.

There is no hint of continuity from the previous episode. For me, this is a good episode that can be an introduction for a new watcher picking it up mid-series, as it doesn’t rely heavily on previous plot points or needing an understanding of the story arc.

The opening scene of pandemonium in the station – is it a metaphor for Rick & Kate? Her world is nuts, and she hardly notices, and seems to be deliberately staying out of it. Like she is determined to stay on an even keel regardless of the storms going on around her. But Rick is thoroughly enjoying the dynamics of the room, but as an observer, not a participant. His boyish optimism helps him to see and enjoy the unpredictable (and somewhat messy) aspects of life going on around him.

Lanie walking into the scene dressed to the nines, and she takes a light-hearted dig at Beckett (“Unlike you, I don’t sit around work all night…”) and Castle (“Quit looking at the girls, Castle”). Now that’s a perfect summation of where our favorite people are at this point of their lives.

Castle the grammar nazi appears again. I can relate. In another post (just this morning), someone wrote about Beckett “going rouge” Rouge? Really? She sells makeup? Oh, there I go again. (BTW, if anyone is interested: Who or Whom? Him, that’s whom.)

When R&E get the call about the second victim, they seem to be ignoring Castle while talking to Beckett.

We hear the first mention of Ryan’s girlfriend’s name – Jenny. As a minor continuity point, this is the one steady thread throughout the rest of the episodes. Even though we don’t see much of them together, this is a solid relationship going on in the background that grounds Ryan, even through the teasing he receives about it. “Honeymilk!”

Oh, yes, Perlmutter! I really enjoy his occasional visits, and especially his (total lack) of people skills. “Officer Whojamiface over there…” What a classic line! There’s a reason he hangs out with dead people.

I have been wondering why R&E seem so disconnected from Castle, when Beckett has accepted him back. They look actually annoyed with him when he walks over to their desk asking “How’d you find the body?” “On the ground” was not exactly a welcoming way of answering him. Their body language screams “Go away, we don’t want to talk with you”, but Rick seems determined to power through it. He does, and the guys open up when Rick proposes their wager. Nothing like a bit of competition wrapped up in a shared secret to restore these guys’ friendship. Their friendly rivalry through the rest of the episode is a hoot to watch.

Beckett’s Little Elephants.

It would be good to see Karpowski from time to time. And Stegner.

What can I write about the scenes in the bullpen when Beckett begins to suspect that something is going on behind her back? I will just sit back and enjoy it. “Hundred on us!”

Seems that everyone can see Rick & Kate building theory together, as if they are the only two people in the universe. They are that oblivious to everyone else around when they are doing this.

Kate is opening up slightly about her mom’s case. But only in a small, easily controlled way. We can see that Rick wants to say something, but thinks it better to keep quiet. I think this was a wise decision this time.

“You take our murder, we’ll take yours.” I’m amazed at how often these kinds of offhand comments are used to break the cases open. I wonder how frequently these kinds of things happen in real life.

Oh, I would call the bet as won by Castle & Beckett. The first bet: Esposito: “We’ll probably close ours before your therapist” They didn’t. Second bet: Esposito: “Oh, we’re going to get a confession” Castle: “Not if we get one first” It was Castle & Beckett who got the confession from R&E’s suspect. R: “Our guy broke” B: “But we broke him” I rule in favor of Beckett. Pay up.

And our favorite foursome is restored.

I agree this epidode is a fun and easy starter episode for anyone coming to the series. It does not make great strides in the grand scheme of things, nor does it move the ship as such forward significantly.  It is enjoyable and fun, I don't know how many times I have watched this episode.  Written by David Grae and directed by Rob Bowman, "The Double Down" is a full of camaraderie and competition; or as Castle says, madness, mayhem and murder, eh murders that is!

Castle the writer, just as concerned that the murderer has managed to kill the English language as surely as he has his victim. And he's not happy about it. Who, whom, your, you're, I hope there is a scrabble game or something in the shows future.  Anyway, Castle's concern for grammar is only interrupted by the diversion of Lanie and "the girls" but she soon puts Castle back on track in a very nice scene.

The second murder call comes in and Ryan accidentally tells everyone that he is going to miss his honey milk with jenny, ahh.  Giving ammunition to anyone willing to use it, namely Esposito and Castle.  It's good to have Perlmutter and Lanie in the same episode, "The body is speaking, somebody shot me". Love it. So the bet is on; but don't tell Beckett. Secrets, murder and gambling, three of Castle's favorite things; if only they could get the secret hand shake thingy right. Martha is fun as always, but here again the Alexis story seemed a little too pushed and pulled to fit just right for me.

I like Karpowski, it's a pity the actress moved on, the restraining order two-step was delightful and played just right by NF and SK. Then we get to see the hard hitting cop version of Castle, although he doesn't quite manage to remember the time frame for the murder; between 7.30 and 9.00, thankyou Beckett.  He's at it again in the interrogation room, as a baffled Kate looks on.

It is here the episode really takes off; Beckett catches on, as Girl Scout cookies are sold in February apparently (the things you learn on this show) and $100 goes down on the A team! Castle really should have mentioned the head shaving part of the bet though. Then we find out the cases are somehow connected by a very large, or small body of water. "There is no such thing as coincidence in a murder case" Castle tells us, unless of course there is; and no Christmas present just yet as our suspect is alibi out by his ankle bracelet.

Back to our place of beautiful imagery. Bowman repeatedly does a great job of shooting Kate at her murder board.  We get our movie reference "Stranger on a Train" though of course Castle is fonder of the Novel.  The movie was later re-made as "Criss Cross" I think, but "Strangers" is the  more note worthy version.  After agreeing that betting and hoping to not find a murderer is wrong, but doing it anyway! the teams start working together when it becomes apparent the cases are indeed connected.  But when it comes to getting a confession we find that the bet back on, and with a vengeance.  The A team comes through as we knew they would, even if it is Espotisto and Ryan's guy they actually compel to confess.

Wading into the shallows for a moment, I have to say that any day we get to see Cstle in sunglasses is a good day! The end scene in "The Double Down" is one of the best IMO, who won the bet? let's call it a tie I sa,y but I'm sure they went on with their sports metaphors most of the evening.  This is just a really good episode, full of humor, camaraderie and murder.  Who could ask for more.

I enjoyed this episode – I liked the play between the serious and silly, especially since the movie they reference, Strangers on a Train, gave me the willies!

Just a few things that haven't been mentioned –

- Castle is clean-shaven now.  Is he giving up the bad boy image around the folks at the 12th?

- As was said above, Castle the English Language Cop – Who/whom, You're/your, and then the whole thing with irony.  Given what I've learned on this site regarding the writers' use of meta/ hero stories/irony…  This comment is as close as we see the writers come to showing their hand.

- There is a comment about "someone very powerful wanting to keep something under wraps".  It is an ongoing theme.

- Becket willingly gives up some information about her feelings about his case.  She's not talking about facts, following leads, getting to the truth; she's talking about how this case if affecting her emotionally.  It's only been a little while since he came back and she's already opening up a tiny corner of herself.  It is a side of her that I wonder if she shared with anyone since when she was with Sorenson long ago.  The second time he shows up in LITTLE, she doesn't seem to share this part of herself with him the way she does with Castle.  I believe it's the first time we hear her say the "why" matters.

- There's that shout out to a famous pizza wars – Famous original or original famous

- We get two nicknames in this episode – Honeymilk and Iceposito and one Castle-ism – Bam says the lady!

- One bit of the Ryan/ Esposito partnership that makes me laugh – Esposito's little headshake at Ryan's antics.  We see it twice in this episode – during the conversation leading up to the second body when Ryan is talking about honeymilk helpign Jenny sleep and then when Ryan spits on his hand to seal the bet with Castle. Each time it's Esposito shaking his head as if to say, "I can't believe you said/did that…"  Watch for it, it comes up a lot and it's always funny!

Life is a great big canvas.  Throw all the paint you can at it! ~Danny Kaye
