I feel it's best to start a new thread for talking about ratings.

Early reports looks promsing.

I thought last night's show (with the Strangers on a Train theme) was fresh and quick and delightful.  However, writing the word "there" instead of "they're" is NOT a grammatical error; it is a spelling error.  Castle (and his writers) should know that.  Also, if Castle is so careful with the English language, why does he prounounce the letter "t" in the word "often?"  That is an uneducated pronunciation.  Little things, but I wanted to bring them up.  I adore Castle and think it is one of the best-written and most entertaining shows on television.  Thank you!

This week's ratings are out.  Same 18-49 rating share as last week and a few more viewers, not the improvement I hoped for but great news that it didn't go backwards.

ABC Dancing With the Stars 3.5/9 16.52
CBS How I Met Your Mother 3.6/10 8.73
  NBC Heroes 2.5/6 5.82
CW One Tree Hill 1.2/3 2.61

8:30 CBS Accidentally on Purpose 3.1/8 8.07

9:00 CBS Two and a Half Men 4.7/11 13.64
ABC Dancing With the Stars 3.8/9 16.82
FOX Lie to Me (season premiere) 2.9/7 7.72
NBC Trauma (season premiere) 2.3/6 6.93

ABC is in a difficult position. Castle gradually gained viewers near the end of last season. The premiere was down but it gained again last night. But the key demo is that 18-49 and Castle is averaging a 2.3 which is not that great. Usually anything under a 2.5 gets yanked.

Is maintaining (with a slight increase) viewers enough to keep it on the air? What's going to happen when DWTS isn't a lead in for it? You can see the numbers it had in the first half hour compared to the 2nd. Having said that it's been consistent in those numbers. It was good enough to get it renewed.

I think ABC waits a few more weeks to see how the numbers hold up for The Forgotten and Eastwick before making a decision. I feel confident that Castle could get a full season but it won't surprise to see ABC shuffle it with The Forgotten and Eastwick to see how they perform in different time slots.

I think ABC has shown support for the show so they won't be in a hurry to pull the plug. I think (and this is purely speculative) if Castle can keep the ratings it's not going anywhere in a hurry. I'm confident we'll at least get the 13 eps for this season, and depending how things go in the next few weeks maybe even get an order for the back 9.

Of course, it would be ideal to see the numbers increase more next week, and I hope somehow that happens. Keep spreading the word!

I really hope so. I love this show and want it around for a long time. But it needs to keep growing. [filtered] has their renew/cancellation index out. I guesss it's pretty reliable. Castle is on the likely to be cancelled list. I really hope they are proven wrong.

Just for the record, I wouldn't call [filtered] reliable when by their very nature they post rumours all the time.

That said, they've pulled their info from TVBytheNumbers.com which at least makes educated guesses… but again, that's all they are, guesses.  They were certain Dollhouse & Chuck would be cancelled last season and both were renewed.  I'm sure there were others they got wrong too.

Here's what tvbythenumbers had to say about Castle in their Cancel/Renew section – but again, remember that it's just speculation, they don't have any insider information.

In May, Castle was on the bubble for renewal, now it’s in the crosshairs for cancellation. It was the worst performing scripted show for ABC during premiere week this season. the forgotten is also at significant risk for being canceled by the end of the season based on its first week’s results. And a lot can happen between now and May, but fans of Eastwick and Brothers & Sisters might not want to make any multi-year viewing plans either.

By the way, you appear to be new here – welcome Kris!  Good to have you.

What ABC had to say about this week's Castle.

Seeing them use the words "strongest ever" sounds good.

"Producing its strongest "DWTS" retention ever, ABC's "Castle" topped NBC's "Jay Leno" by 3.7 million viewers (9.2 million vs. 5.5 million) and by 29% in Adults 18-49 (2.2/6 vs. 1.7/4).

* "Castle" was up from its week ago season premiere in Women 18-34 (2.1/6 vs. 2.0/6) and Women 18-49 (3.2/9 vs. 3.1/8).

Tvbythenumbers is a mostly reliable site but the index has been wrong before. They seem to have it out for Castle though. They always headline their renewal/cancelation index with Castle despite having other shows perform well under it. Have to remember that they're strictly about the 18-49 demo numbers. They don't factor in other things like gaining in viewers (which Castle has done before) despite staying the same in the 18-49 demo. Or that this is an ABC production and that the cost to make it is probably cheaper. Especially compared to The Forgotten which a Jerry Bruckheimer production.

Nathan had a radio interview this morning and he said that they wouldn't know about a full season pickup for another couple months so production wouldn't be interrupted.

I'm sure we'll get the 13 episodes unless the numbers take a dive. I'm talking a 180 from what they've been doing consistently thus far. ABC coninues to include it in its ratings press release touting how it's improved in certain areas and appears happy with how well it's outperformed Leno. Remember last season it not only got beat by CSI: Miami but rarely beat out Medium if at all. It's been a strong 2nd and it's not even close this season.

I'll repeat that I think Castle's fate depends on how well the other new shows do for ABC. I'm looking at The Forgotten and Eastwick specifically.

Is that interview online somewhere? Do you have a link? I don't think I've come across that one yet.

I agree, tvbythenumbers gets it wrong almost as much as it gets it right and ABC have been supportive of the show since the beginning, look what they did when the ratings dropped after they inserted a couple of weeks of Surviving Suburbia – they pulled the other show out so that Castle would pick up again (which thankfully worked!)

Oops forgot the link in my original post. Here it is.

http://www.freejohnnydare.com/…..n-9-28-09/

The part where he talks about Castles fate is at the end. Around the 7:18 mark. He just mentions that the numbers are starting to roll in now and they should know about the back order pretty soon (he also mentions couple months?) so they can prepare an ending. Did I hear all that right?

Forgot to add that I think ABC would like to see how the ratings do when Debbie Mazar guest stars. Not that I think she's going to make the ratings go through the roof but a known guest star couldn't hurt at this point.

Thanks for the link, I'll listen tomorrow, need to get some sleep right now.

By prepare an ending I assume they mean do they wrap up the storyline or have a cliffhanger for the next season.

I'm also hoping the Halloween episode will bring in a few extra viewers

Strange…my post disappeared. I'd mentioned that it looks like DWTS has gone down…if not from last week, definitely from last season. But Castle is keeping the same numbers, and even increasing a bit. So it can't be all DWTS that's keeping us afloat, right?
