OfflineObservations while rewatching The Late Shaft
This remains one of my personal favorites, a light, entertaining episode that I can watch for the pure fun of it. It doesn’t provide much progress on the C&B relationship front, and can be watched almost anywhere in the sequence of episodes. I do not call any of the lighter episodes like this one ‘fillers’, as that gives the impression that the episode is not important to the overall flavor of the show.
Even though Rick has become accustomed to the publicity spotlight, he can still be star-struck by attractive actresses.
If I remember right, this is the first episode where the VotW is alive at the start, before getting killed. Well maybe not the first. At least he had more interaction than just running down the street before either getting a gargoyle to the head (Wrapped up in Death) or running into the side of a stolen car (Kill the Messenger).
Rick looked a little puzzled when Bobby Mann said “They want me dead.” Like he didn’t know what to do with the statement. But Bobby didn’t follow it up after the show, and that left Rick hanging, only to be told next morning that he was dead.
It took some convincing, but Kate was at least willing to humor Rick’s insistence that Lanie review Bobby’s autopsy in greater detail, even though she was reluctant to just believe him.
I’m rather partial to “She’s armed. He’s dangerous.”
When Rick sees Ex-wife No. 5, he says “She’s got crazy eyes.” He will say it again, in Overkill.
When Ellie Monroe calls Rick, he seems rather naïve, while Kate’s got her number. But the next morning, she seems rather casual with her “Lose the ‘I just got laid’ voice.” But we can tell it starts to bug her when he doesn’t deny it. Her facial expression when Ellie calls again was priceless. I’m bugged by his rather casual attitude toward a woman throwing herself at him, and it seems he just wants the feel-good sex without thinking she might have an ulterior motive (which gets exposed later).
Captain Roy looks pleased that Howard Weisberg went ballistic over getting scooped on his own star’s murder, by another network.
Kate, you don’t care that a beautiful actress is interested in Rick? Oh, really? It shows that you do.
Holy shift! (getting crap past the radar) Whatta car!
Zack Robinson. Good bad-guy name. Snakey Z, hard K, even has Rob in it. Rick likes names like these, I like his characterizations. In the interrogation room, his performance was cool.
A surprising observation for me was Rick’s cold, simmering anger at Hank McPhee during the final confrontation.
Then there was Kate offering Rick a “victory lap” after the case, but Rick has “a date”. Kate looks nonplussed until Rick says his date is Alexis’ return. Both their faces look pleased.

OfflineThis wasn't one of my favorites, but I did like parts of it.
The thing that gets me about Castle, is his seemingly clueless behavior and/or consideration for women. You would think he'd be particularly suited, aware and accustom to the needs and behavior of women. He has spent the better part of his whole life surrounded by women, with little male mentoring or direction. I find it curious and sometimes frustrating that he doesn't have a better grasp of the do's and don'ts, or the possible ulterior motive for their attentions toward him? For me, it just doesn't make much sense he wouldn't be better at this.

OfflineNot one of my favorites either.
I remember not being too excited about the premise of this episode when announced first time around; simply because for some reason I don’t enjoy television based around television, weird I know. Written by David Grae and directed by the dependable Bryan Spicer my real problem with The Late Shaft comes down to two words – Ellie Monroe, rarely have I disliked a character more and I’m afraid it does colour the whole episode for me. Rationally or not my minds says – no Ellie equals no Demming, equals no Gina, equals no Josh. I know it doesn’t work that way, but there it is.
This being Castle, there were of course some interesting and enjoyable parts of the episode, and I did like wife number one, big shot host should have quit while he was ahead.
The “we should have a signature line” was cute, and the altercations with Beckett over Ellie’s interest in Castle was good stuff.
Why was Ellie not interviewed originally as being witness to that last night, they spoke to everyone else but not her? No, they wait till she rings Castle, who presumably gave her his number yet seemed surprised by her call to arrange some “comforting”. He was certainly keen to oblige though, still amused by the large literal elephant in Castle’s bedroom. And Ellie too tells castle he is sweet.
Beckett is very good at compartmentalizing, first her surprise at Castle and Ellie, but then switching out of that difficult mode and onto business. I think she was surprised and little disappointed, then determined not to care or at least seem too.
I do think Beckett was very much the pro and adult in not gloating as Castle was expecting her too when all was revealed, and she wanted to cheer him up but of course he had plans with Alexis.
Hate is a very strong word but I just hate that final scene with Ellie and Castle when she turns up at the loft. Just Yuk! “I never had so much fun being used, feel free to have at me anytime” really? Again Yuk. When first aired some expressed the thought Castle was just being nice but he looks serious to me. He was so not ready for a real relationship at that time. IMO what went down in The Late Shaft opened the door for what was to come with the Demming arc. “The Late Shaft” is an episode I re-watch less frequently than others.

I didn't go into as much depth about this stuff, as it's my most disliked part of this, no make that all, episodes. I glossed over it because I liked the rest. But that's just my compartmentalizating.
