Good rating considering what else was on! Good for us! We're still getting a ton of viewers!

If we look at CBS and ABC and key demographic at

9:30, CBS had Big Bang with 4.0/10, ABc had RC with 3.1/8.
At 10, CBS had CSI with 3.3/9, ABC had Castle with 2.7/8.

So CBS dropped 17,5%, while ABC dropped 12,9% from the 9:30-show to the 10-show.

So if you take the number of "pre-viewers" into account, Castle did better than CSI in keeping the 18-49ers on.

So better with the key demographic, not in total viewers, where CSI kept all, while Castle lost a million. But it used to be a bigger difference: looking back to, let's say the week of episode 205, my favorite:

CSI: 3.8/10 – 12.65 mill

Castle: 2.4/6 – 9.88 mill

—Castle had a great turn-out for the two-parter, but 2,7/8 is still good numbers compared to it's history

—CSI rating has dropped by a lot… I haven't looked into whether that is a steady decline, or other variations.

I wish I knew how to quit you.

You're right about CSI dropping by, but we should also look at the show before Castle, "Romantically challenged" premiere was beaten by the repeat of "The Big Bang Theory", and less people stayed to watch "Castle".

Castle still did pretty well, but I agree that 'Romantically Challenged' needs to move. ABC also needs to continue with the positive promotion of Castle. I also think that one thing that hurt the ratings this week was that some fans were offended with last weeks episode, but to be a true fan you can't let one episode affect you that much. There may be some episodes that you don't like as well as others from time-to-time, but that doesn't mean the show has lost it's touch. Hopefully fans will see recaps that are positive, ABC will up promotion again and the new show on before Castle will be dealt with appropriately.

To be fair, I don't think the problem is Romantically Challenged.   A lot of folks were watching DWTS because of Kate Gosselin and she was voted off this week.  The ratings for DWTS reflect that and the results show were very low last night.

I also want to point out a freindly reminder that much of the cast & crew of Castle are big supports of Romantically Challenged.  I'm sure you all can see that if you all follow any of them on Twitter.

A 2.6 or 2.7 (whatever the final numbers were) is still above average for a scripted show on ABC.   I'm shocked that the ratings fell again last night for LOST!!    Frankly, I don't think Castle has anything to worry about ratings wise.

I'm not speaking for castleobserver but I know I personally saw a LOT of comments after last week's episode about Castle's behavior with the actress (I can't recall her name right now and I don't have time to look it up).  Comments along the lines that Castle no longer deserves Beckett and that they are no longer a Castle/Beckett shipper.  And some of the comments came from people who I know have been long-time, rabid fans of the show.

That could also have something to do with the decline in numbers this week, though I didn't see it that way there could be some people who were turned off enough by Castle's fling that they lost the desire to watch.  Especially if they were newer viewers, they may have seen it as a radical change in his character from what we'd seen in the most recent new episodes leading up to it.

Over on the ABC official Castle forum, some fans have been raving about how they were going to stop watching after The Late Shaft aired. I know it is kinda stupid. Either you are a Castle fan or you are not. But it has kinda gotten out of hand. Just ask anyone who visits both sites and they can tell you what has been going on. Some posters have even said some nasty and inappropriate things over there about Castle, Beckett and it just needs to stop. Personally, I was not offended by the episode and will continue to watch Castle for as long as it is on tv. It hurts to see fans so divided on their feelings about just one episode.

No the blame for the drop in ratings is Romantically Challenged, I watched the premier myself and it was terrible. I think it is going to be another Surviving Suburbia for us, dropping like a stone and trying to drag Castle with it.

Of course we are already renewed so we can take it, it is still annoying though.

With a repeat too next week? Yuck, not good scheduling ABC, hopefully they will promote the heck out of the Season finale

I hope so too.  I was thinking a promo could go like this (this would be the voiceover):

Thanks for explaining.

Let me say this…

If people have nothing better to do than get antsy when (fictional) people have (fictional) sex on tv, they are not fans. They are fanatics, likely with some kind of "morality police" agenda.

I am fairly certain there were not 3 million people offended by learning that a grown (fictional) unmarried man had sex with an unmarried (fictional) woman in a tv show.

I do think the lead-in was not strong enough.

And ABC dropped the promo ball.

EDITED to add: Sorry for the Thunderbolt  From Above tone here. It could be that some of those objectors were younger people too, I have no problem with them.

Castle did just fine and even grew out of that one show (Find my Family or something like that) this season. Was that before The Bachelor was the lead in?

I really think RC is another SS and that hurts Castle.

I could not agree more spinja.  But I've noticed there are some people who seem to think that Castle and Beckett are real people rather than characters in a TV show.  Or at least they act that way.  It's kind of puzzling to me, but I've definitely seen things indicating that.

And I also agree that 3 million people did not turn to something else on Monday because they were offended by the previous week's episode.  I believe it was a combination of things, no one thing accounted for the drop in ratings.  Yes the lead-in played a part, as did the lack of promotion by ABC, and whatever small number of people were so offended by "The Late Shaft" that they decided not to tune in this week.  It's not just one thing that led to a drop in the ratings.

But I also believe that we need to remember how awesome the numbers are, even though they were down some.  We're getting Season 3 and that's what's really important, IMO.

Now that Castle is in Wednesday summer repeats, I was curious about the ratings.  For the first Wednesday repeat, the ratings per tvbythenumbers were as follows:

10:00 NBC Law & Order SVU (repeat) 1.8 6 6.104
  CBS CSI:NY (repeat) 1.1 3 5.874
  ABC Castle (repeat) 0.7 2 3.304

10:30 NBC Law & Order SVU (repeat) 1.8 6 5.923
  CBS CSI:NY (repeat) 1.2 4 5.836
  ABC Castle (repeat) 0.7 2 3.401

I'm sure part of the low demo is due to Castle not being on it's normal night…plus the lead-in was Cougartown, which had a demo of 0.9 and viewers in the high 2s I think.  There was also some discussion of too many Castle repeats…the fact that many episodes have been shown more than twice with Mon, Sat, and now Wed repeats.  Hopefully more viewers will find it on Wednesdays.  It sounds like ABC is showing the promo quite a bit.

I watched the re-run last night, partly to catch the promo again but they didn't show it. I guess if you're watching it on Wednesday you already know what night it's on. Laugh

Now since we're going to get a double dose with re-runs on Sat, maybe we should get a new promo for that too… (hint, hint.) Tongue

Actually, the fact Castle continues to draw over 3 million viewers even after multiple repeats of an episode is quite good.  And the fact that ABC is showing it on Wed evenings now means it will get exposure that it may not have gotten on Saturday evening repeats.  This is all good.   Additionally, this bodes well for Castle for syndication at some point in the future also.

The viewership we got last year may just be a launching pad for the number of viewers this next season…wouldn't that be awesome.  Certainly between Stana's extra movies this summer, plus her showing up at various other events as well as Nathan showing up (with other Castlers) at Comicon bodes well for the show also.  They are keeping the current crop of viewers involved while acquiring potentially new viewers.  We certainly have hard working stars, that's for sure.
