Observations while rewatching Food to Die For

This was, for me, a fun episode, with numerous funny moments for out favorite couple. Even though Demming is there for a few minutes. Ans another episode with Perlmutter. I like Lanie, but once in a while I really am ready for the change of pace that he brings.

Boy, Alexis is really an overachiever – studying for Advanced Placement exams?

We see Rick trying to reclaim his morning ritual by bringing coffee for Kate, but Demming has beat him to it. He is irritated, but tries to hide it – unsuccessfully. When Kate tells him she is getting together with Tom after work, she asks Rick if he has a problem with that – But he punts again. It will take him another year to work up the courage to admit it to her.

Ah… Madison. The only blast from Kate’s past that we have seen so far. Kate has only mentioned a few sketchy points, but Madison is like an open window. Rumor has it there will be another one in Season 4.

Kate turns down Madison’s invitation saying “I have… something.” without telling her about Demming. Rick looks distressed, so he offers to go with Maddie – then it is Kate’s turm to look uncomfortable. But Maddie is at least sensitive to the possible chemistry between Rick & Kate, offering Kate an opportunity to speak up. Now it’s her turn to deny there is anything going on in our DD.

Then at the dinner, when Maddie offers to introduce Roco to Beckett, it is Rick’s turn again to look lost.

We cut to Kate & Tom enjoying an in-office dinner, then Ryan & Espo walk in on them…

We cut back to Rick & Maddie fawning over their dinners, and Kate walks in on them. It’s almost like a ping-pong game, this cutting back and forth between Rick & Kate.

Then Rick & Kate get into a very entertaining tiff… “…when you stomped in there like the fun police.” “Uh-uh! You can watch… from the observation room.” “And now you’re pinching me?” “You were just giggling over the risotto… with our suspect!” This was a great moment.

Then Maddie innocently calls out Beckett: “You want to make little Castle babies!”

After, Rick tells Kate “I heard… Everything.” I love these kinds of interactions.

Later, when Rick, Esposito & Ryan are talking, and Maddie & Kate are having a separate conversation, our DD come to the same conclusion – separately. And where do they go in their excitement? To reconnect and share that excitement with each other, like there is no one else in the world. They really enjoy these moments, that they share with no one else.

When they see Cecily, and bring her in, she answers Rick: “David doesn’t sleep with every girl who walks by” It’s his wake-up call to get his act together, and he quietly takes it to heart. We will not see him having casual flings with any more fans, starlets, or any other passing skirt.

After they close the case, we see the romantic Rick and cautious Kate comparing notes. He says Cecily should have followed her heart and gone with Wolf. Kate responds “Guys like Wolf, they come in, upset the apple cart, they make you feel alive, but eventually he’s just going to let you down.” Romantic Rick. Cautious Kate. For sure.

Finally, when Rick excuses himself, Kate thinks he might be infatuated with Maddie, but visibly relaxes when he says it’s to help Alexis. Her thoughtful admiration is interrupted by Demming. Too bad. He is a decent guy, and doesn’t deserve to get brushed off (that’s coming later) – but I really want to see Rick & Kate work it out, and continue to grow closer. To each other.

Castle begins “Food to Die For” by hurrying out of the loft and into the precinct early in an attempt to make a good impression on Beckett. But upon finding Demming, I mean ‘Tom” already making way he seems to give up rather too quickly for my taste.

I always enjoy seeing Perlmutter, I hope we continue to see him from time to time in season 4.  The actress who plays Maddie has a new gig also but it would be nice to see her again if possible. By the by was her character named “Maddie” as a nod to that show with the curse that shall not be named? Hope not but wonder all the same.

Terri Edda Miller writes fun episodes but I was a bit underwhelmed by Ron Underwood’s direction.

I think part of the reason Beckett appears so receptive to Tom is that following Castle’s dalliance with Ellie Monroe she has no reason to think he has any real interest in her. And Castle was showing his petulant rather than his mature side in offering ‘Moral support’ to Maddie.  And he’s keen to rub it in “what colour would Maddie like on me?” Beckett probably thinks that for Castle Moral Support has a lot in common with Comforting, and we know how that went.

I do wish Rick would listen to Martha more, “dating Beckett’s friend, that’s a mistake”; She says. We have a mirror scene of Maddie checking with Beckett if she and Castle are anything.  Kate says no but her tone has a wistful, wondering, somewhat sad tone to it, definitely not the firm reply she would have once given. Another date and Castle can’t help him self but prod Maddie for a little info on Beckett, he did seem right into the date though.

The interrogation scene is fun and perhaps revealing but Rick doesn’t push, in fact it would have been good to see more reaction from him.

We get our first mention of Gina in ever so long to find out Rick proposed to her in a hot air balloon in February.  Was that the same hot air balloon that was on his list of 10 best’s with Meridith? However with just one mention I do not consider groundwork made in regards to Gina.

Interesting quote from Castle “look at his behaviour, he stops sleeping around. Yada, yada, there is only one reason a man cleans up his act.” Like watching Rick in the second half of season 3.  And if Castle’s suspicions of Demming was not enough Ryan confirms his attentions to Beckett.

And finally “you have no idea how hard it is to love someone knowing they are going to break your heart”. “Why risk”. “Because the heart wants, what the heart wants”. This episode shows how far our DD have to go before either is ready for a relationship with the other. We have a while more to wait.
