Once again Castle topped the night for overall viewers but came in behind CSI:Miami for the 18-49 demographic. Numbers were down a little on last week, a little surprising given Castle followed directly from Dancing With the Stars this week.

Well, I was hoping for better with the DWTS lead-in.
It's just disappointing that one month ago, Castle was leading CSI in the demo and now has fallen behind. I'm very happy about the total viewers, but I know that doesn't matter to the ABC bottom line. I wonder what made the difference since The Late Shaft (aside from RC)…

I think that RC was not a good lead in for Castle, I bet some viewers left and just haven't come back. In addition I'm wondering if ABC's promotion of Castle has fallen off. They promoted Tick Tick Tick and Boom quite heavily.
I don't understand this, can someone explain. CSI has a higher market share, but lower total viewers than Castle? Doesn't make sense.

leftfield – what it means is that according to Nielsen viewer statistics more people under the age of 18 and over the age of 49 watch Castle than some other shows (eg, CSI miami) but advertisers primarily care about the people between those age groups – which is why Castle gets ranked lower for the hour even though they had more viewers overall.

Nice to see the overall viewership is high, but I'd love to see that prized market group number rise. Maybe next week.

I was sure that the ratings would go up because of the DWTS lead-in, rather than RC. Well, I guess I can't complain considering the viewership is still high. It'll be interesting to see the final ratings for the finale…

I really thought the numbers would go back up following DWTS. I don't think there was an overrun so hopefully it doesn't drop in the finals but I wouldn't be surprised by a tick down either.
I really can't explain the drop off either. My best guess is that those new viewers or say even casual viewers that tuned into the two parter thought the show was more in that tone than the playful one it usually is. The promotion by ABC is way down from those episodes. And RC could have played a part in killing momentum too.
It's a shame because the show should be shining during the May sweeps.

At first I was thinking that some of the 2-parter audience fell off when the tone became lighter again, but the ratings were still really good for Wrapped in Death and Late Shaft, unless the reaction was delayed. Perhaps it has more to do with the casual viewers that left with RC…and didn't come back.
I also agree that the promotion has not been what it was 6-8 weeks ago. With ABC stuggling in general, you'd think they'd have wanted to do whatever was necessary to keep their surging show going in the right direction. If Castle stays at this level next week, I certainly hope it starts off Season 3 strong.

Per tvbythenumbers, ABC is putting a positive spin on things:
“Castle” (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
ABC’s “Castle” ranked No. 1 at 10:00 p.m. in Total Viewers (11.4 million) and took a strong second in the hour to CBS’ veteran “CSI: Miami” among Adults 18-49 (2.6/7). In fact ABC’s sophomore “Castle” registered as the No. 1 TV show in its hour in Total Viewers for the 6th time in 8 telecasts. “Castle” was up over its Season Finale performance on the year-ago night (5/11/09), when it also had a “DWTS” lead-in, among Total Viewers (+1.4 million – 11.4 million vs. 10.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (+8% – 2.6/7 vs. 2.4/7). The ABC drama pulled in its biggest audience in 4 weeks – since 4/12/10.

i think that it was because ABC keeps pulling RC in and the placing it back in, and they're not very loud about it. So people think RC is on and turn off the TV before Castle …..
