OfflineObservations while rewatching Overkill
This is the third of the four Demming episodes, but for me, it is still quite entertaing.
After the opening scene with the maid, we cut to the teapot screaming and Alexis proof-reading a draft chapter of Naked Heat. Rick is clearly inserting characters into his stories from his daily experiences. Schlemming is characterized as a bit of a doofus, reflecting his opinion of Demming.
We see how much of a metrosexual Rick can be, when he gushes over the Damian Wilder men’s products, then later with his understanding of the characters of Sex in the City.
When Demming appears with Rick at the whiteboard, Rick is visibly irritated. This is the start of Rick getting competitive for Kate’s attentions. But all he succeeds in doing is becoming annoying. I can understand it, but it’s still hard to watch him act that way.
Rick rejects outright the robbery component, I suspect it’s only because that’s Demming’s area of expertise.
Rick is visibly trying to capture Kate’s attention, while Tom doesn’t appear to be putting any effort into it. Tom comes across as quietly confident, while Rick’s insecurities are gaining the upper hand. I wish he didn’t have to try so hard.
Kate’s line “Sharing a cab” is pretty thin. But no more so than Rick’s “Comforting” with Ellie Monroe.
In a few minutes, Ryan picks up on Rick’s distress, and teases him with “You want to be the one to crack it, not Demming… But that’s not why it bugs you, is it?” He is enjoying Rick’s distress.
Discussing Martha’s interactions with her “rival”, Rick appears to think about how it parallels his with Demming.
After their interview with Benny, Rick & Kate get into their own world of theory-building, in front of Demming. Tom sees that they are off in their own world, and he is left out.
After the interview with crying Rebecca, Rick & Demming look to be getting along a bit better, and Kate solves the case on her, in front of both of them. She gives each one credit for their contribution.
At the end, Rick witnesses Kate & Tom in a PDA, and all he gets is a peek through the door with a verbal thanks. He looks crushed, but he’s trying to put on a brave face so as to not give it away.
Overall an enjoyable episode, but the close was a downer. Not a disappointment with the story line, but a personal identification with Rick’s feelings. Man, this show can stir up long-forgotten memories and feelings.

OfflineOverkill begins with Alexis suggesting Castle rub Schelmming out of the new book and Castle wishing it was that easy to get rid of the real thing. His attitude towards Demming has turned decidedly sour, and he even takes the opportunity to rub him out a second time when wiping Demming’s ‘stolen books’ from the white board.
Castle and Demming are both keen to impress Beckett with the case. And as Kate and Demming share a cab Rick is left to hope that a taxi ride is all that’s involved. Martha tells Rick sometimes you have to accept you don’t always get what you want; it helps if you ask though Rick!
Castle starts to feel left out when Beckett and Demming question a suspect, and it had to hurt for him to see Demming sitting in Beckett’s chair. Beckett may tell the boys it’s not a competition but that’s exactly how they see it. As both suspects seem helped by timeline revelations Castle starts to feel the pressure, and tells Martha to go after her own rival, even admits to her that all is not well with him. I wished Martha had pressed him to open up more.
It was a good scene with the cry talk mirroring the drunken talk of the season before, and Beckett the good cop starts to put things together. Things start to look up when Castle and Beckett are building theory and Demming can’t get a word in.
All is put right and Beckett is keen to give credit to both men “male vanity being what it is”. And poor Castle sees Kate with Demming in the back hall at the precinct, they looked pretty discreet to me and Beckett obviously thought Castle had already left. Still NF did a good job with poor Castle’s reaction and he runs to the break room where Beckett finds him, “we are a good team” she tells him and Castle has no reply.
This episode is easier to watch than it used to be but I am no closer to understanding Castle now than I was then. He does not like what he sees with Kate and Demming, but just silently seethes. I’m not surprised that Beckett is confused. But as neither was ready for the other, perhaps it’s just as well they kept their distance. Am starting to feel sick about “A deadly Game” already
