Well, it was actually a favorite of mine, but I certainly wish its circumstances hadn't messed with shows that have followed.

I'm hopeful TPTB…both at ABC and Castle…are listening to fan reaction to shows past and present and decide to take a risk themselves in the near future.

As long as Castle or Beckett don't meet again in the fall with one of them married (stupid Maddie Hayes), I'll be fine. That was horrifying when it happened then, and I will not be happy if it happens on another show I like.

Yeessssss.

Just reading the press on Castle, from EW.com or whatever, the user comments are ALWAYS talking about it.  People involved with the show are ALWAYS talking about it.  I'm at the point where I'm starting to twitch every time I hear about it.

Yes. It makes me mad that they use it to say what not to do when, IMHO, the reason the show failed was because the two leads did not get along. To me that should be the exception, not the rule. Grrr!!

I think that the "Moonlighting curse" has become a self-fulfilling prophecy.  Shows, in an effort to avoid the so called "curse", make the opposite mistake of keeping their romantic leads apart and kill the show that way instead.  When a show keeps the leads apart in contrived ways because they are afraid of the "curse" the audience feels manipulated. Yes, I'm talking about Bones, which used to be my favorite show on TV.  I watch, but I no longer care about B+B, they no longer even have any chemistry IMO. "Hogdelina" (spelling) is where I am invested in that show.

Write a good show, with compelling characters that I can get emotional about.  Both good and bad, because who doesn't love a good villain.  Keep it real and don't jump the shark.  When I'm invested in a show I really need the payoff so you need to give it to me.  I'm willing to wait, but don't take advantage of my patience.  If you do those things I will continue to watch until the bitter end.

Castle said in S2e19 – Wrapped up in Death that

There Is NO Curse!!!

I want to hold him and TPTB to that mantra!

Let's change the paradigm and use the template of  Mad About You – the leads were married and even liked each other and that show was on for 7 seasons.

Rick and Kate don't have to be married – but at least let them really like each other – lets see them sneak around the precinct for places to make outLove2 . There are lots of other possibilities. Beckett will have to get jelous of how Castle is – he has a wandering eye. Castle will have to make her play hooky from work at least once. And on and on as they learn and grow as a couple. Once they get together after the near miss that was the season 2 finale.

It's the same genre, people. It's no coincidence it gets mentioned. Hopefully, the past informs the future. I do wonder if the dynamic could withstand with them as a couple. As a rule of thumb, I would say 'no'. Characters change means story ends. To effect a change is to literally reboot the series. It only seems logical when everything else has been exhausted. The question is  - are we working under the same premises?

To effect such change, I would say it would require a transition that keeps the romantic/comedic elements much in check, to be more about the mundane elements of a relationship.

I guess we're in for at least three to five episodes in S3 where they're trying to figure out what's their status and what happened. But he's clearly off to have a summer romance with the ex, and second-time around has its charm. KB on the other hand, could very well fall by default with Demming, who I don't think would give up completely. I would bet both other-halves return, if not in person, are mentioned as 'being around', for a few episodes, and they both crash their relationship at the same time, for some reason or another just in time for year-end sweeps. The critical question is whether they figured out where to take it from there already. My guess is they do not know yet.

It's a little hard to argue against it when Nathan himself believes it and has said it to the press more than once.

Silly man!!

Innocent

But yes, recurring references to it are very tedious.

Yes indeed!

Interestingly, watching "Chuck" I've felt like we've seen the very opposite of the moonlighting curse.    They were really losing me through much of season three, as the will-they-won't-they got increasingly forced and angsty.  Then, Chuck and Sarah finally got together and I've been right back to enjoying the show ever since.  It's not a show that's had great ratings, but I will be interested to see what direction that pairing goes next season.  My impression is that, while it's not a perfect Castle parallel, that particular mystery/drama/comedy/romance/adventure show that played off or romantic tension for the better part of three seasons won't be held back at all by allowing their leads to get together in season three.  The adventure and mystery and chemistry are all still in tact, but now we also get to see Chuck and Sarah really working as a team and taking a new kind of joy in their work…   (In fact, mid-season three, I'd nearly lost all interest in Chuck and Sarah as a couple because the things keeping them apart did feel so artificial and even occasionally mean-spirited.  It was only after that pairing became official that their relationship became fun again, for me.)

Well, we'll see.

But while it was obviously too early to get Castle and Beckett together this season, "Moonlighting Curse" be danged.  I really don't think I'd survive another wait like Bones, and I don't think Castle or Beckett could last through that either!

This doesn't hold water simply because the dynamic was already changed fundamentally by Ellie/Denning.

Whether it was a change for the better is up for debate but the simple fact is, the characters changed; they were no longer happy around each other.

"To effect a change is to literally reboot the series." – Everything changes, with every act, word or thought and i am far from saying the characters SHOULDN'T change.  I could probably watch 7 seasons of Caskett fluff quite happily but I would still want to see some growth, beit marriage, kids or simply a freakin holiday where we see them outside of their comfort zones.

my argument against the finale is not so much what was done (which i dont like but can slightly understand) but the manner in which it was done.

ie. badly.

Well, I used to watch Moonlighting when it was on. And, because of how people feel about that show when the main characters get together, I DO feel like the writers will never let it happen – despite what many people keep hoping… But, we'll just have to see.

But, I was not at all surprised at how the season finale ended. I knew they wouldn't let them get together.

If it wasn't Moonlighting it would be something else "the curse" would be blamed on.

People who don't know and are too lazy to reseach the real reason it failed, will simply point at it to say; that's what happens when you get two leads together. Those who know the whole story will know it's not. Angry

I'm in the camp that getting two people together will not kill the show. However the writers must approach the situation not thinking being a "couple" is a handicap.

One really good example is the "In Death" series. The books actually get BETTER after they become a couple. You know why? Simply because after all the "will they or won't they" non sense is out of the way, they begin to work on the really tough part; really getting to know each other and accepting them –warts and all– because you love them unconditionally.

So, no. I enjoyed Moonlighting for what it was. What I don't enjoy is hearing it mentioned everytime someone is afraid they can't do better.

NYPD. Open the damn door!

Exactly. Perhaps, they should think Get Smart instead of Moonlighting. In Get Smart, Max and 99 go from friends, to boyfriend and girlfriend, to marriage and finally to even having children.

"My partner is crazy and may start firing at any moment." – Castle speaking in Chinese about Beckett Beckett: (about Natalie Rhodes) She took my coffee, Castle! Beckett: Alakazam, jackass. Esposito: "Listen to me. You're too late. The cops already know all about...me and your mom." Beckett: "I put a lot of people in this place. Some of them want to kill me, others never been treated so fairly in their lives - so they form an attachment to me. It’s like I’m their favorite schoolteacher. Some of those people might visit you while you’re in here, like the ghosts that visit Scrooge. And after some time with them, you might find yourself a changed man. So I will be back here, week after week, to ask you who hired you, until that miracle occurs."
