Observations while rewatching Fool Me Once

A solid Castle episode, with a so-so case that provides a background for some really great character moments for Castle, Beckett, Alexis and the team. I’m going to confine my comments to these moments, as the Body-of-the-Week is not essential to what we are learning about our Favorite People.

Castle opens the front door… to Dylan. A very handsome (and sexy) violin teacher, that Alexis had contacted WITHOUT HIS KNOWLEDGE. She’s, what, 16 years old? And she is contracting private tutors on her own? How is he getting paid, from her allowance? We know that she is sometimes “the grownup” of the family, but that’s a lot of authority for a teenager to exercise without at least some supervision.

We will find out that there’s nothing questionable going on, Alexis & Dylan maintain an appropriate teacher-student relationship, but it does let us see Rick go into his over-protective dad mode (or ‘Daddy Dearest’ as he says later), which he pulls off masterfully. Even though he is over-the-top in his reactions, Alexis shares some responsibility for this, as she did it without clearing it with him first. She is not legally an adult yet.

When Rick enters the classroom, he acknowledges the uniformed officer standing in the background, whispering “Hey Mike!” I don’t know if this was scripted or a Nathan-ism, but it is an indication of the inclusive attitude of our leads (as well as the whole crew from what we have heard) – they are not primadonnas.

Beckett & Ryan are waiting for Rick, holding back a surprise for him. They clearly are having fun waiting for his reaction.

When they get to the real crime scene, there was a very brief two-finger gesture by Castle with the blue exam gloves. Was this a reference to Serenity’s “Two by two. Hands of blue.”?

Castle & Esposito “Feed the birds” after Castle’s “Diabolical. I like it”. Was this the first time, or did I miss an earlier instance?

I haven't seen Ryan with any of Castle's books so far this season. Did he finish reading them all?

Castle brings coffee to Beckett, while asking her if she had read her advanced copy of Heat Wave. After she maneuvered Rick into getting a copy for her, she’s clearly playing him, while it is clear that she has only read a small part of it, so far. His “You’re trying to push my buttons, but it’s not going to work.” Her “Really? It seems to be working just great.” Now Kate IS having fun.

Cameo appearance by Beckett’s Little Elephants after R&E enter with “Fletcher”s stuff.

Ryan hurt his back? And Espo bought it? What's going to be their payback?

Kate’s “Castle is giving us his psychological insights based on his extensive experience as a fraud.” Growrr.

The interview with Patty Schultz was great! “I killed him… In my mind… With a belt sander”. But we get a little insight into Castle’s background when she asks him “Have you ever been duped?” “I’ve been married twice.” Even though Kate rolls her eyes at this, it is obvious to us that he felt like he had been deceived and taken advantage of by his ex-wives.

Rick admits to being impressed, as a writer, with “Fletcher”s ability to spin believable stories. Kate isn’t.

Sheri Ort. Broke his heart. Stole his lunch money. Laughed about it with her friends. Ended up on the murder board in 3XK. Is there a moral there?

Another late night at the station, with pizza. Great team moment sharing favorite con movies, except Kate says she hates con movies. We believe her – for now. She is adept at playing all of them at once.

Then Rick starts to wonder why “Fletcher” wrote back to all the school kids. It seems out of character for a con man to put so much effort into the personal touches if he was simply conning the school and the kids. Roy’s “He’s got a point”. Kate’s “Now who’s the sucker?… Sir…” Oops. Still a great time with the team

Rick’s curiosity over Kate’s “date” sets him up for some teasing from R & E. “Why do you care anyway, Castle? Do you have some unresolved feelings?” Oh, yes you do, but don’t admit it. Yet. We see that Kate’s “date” is with Rick’s book, Heat Wave. She looks to be reading it slowly, savoring it a bit at a time. She is only about ¼ of the way through it so far.

Back at his loft, Rick is going “off the reservation” regarding Alexis & Dylan’s violin lesson. He definitely goes way beyond reasonable, with background checks, polygraph, etc. But speaking as a dad, Alexis shouldn’t have Dylan in her bedroom, out of sight. I would have her in the open family room space, not to lie like Rick did, but to say “Please, I would just be more comfortable if you practiced down here.”

And that’s just the first half…

So much great banter, teasing, eye-sex, I could go on… And on… I’ll let others comment on the rest.

I had forgotten how great the backstory elements of this episode are, being filled with so many character moments with Castle, Beckett, Alexis, and the gang. This was full of them.

Castle has been hooked, and the hook is set deep.

“Fool Me Once” written by Alexi Hawley and directed by Bryan Spicer is a really fun episode IMO and one that is very re-watchable. It begins with Castle writing which is always nice to see. Castle opens the door to the unannounced new Violin teacher, and is dismayed when Alexis disappears up to her bedroom with said teacher for her lesson. Always found it odd that Castle was concerned about Alexis being alone upstairs with the teacher, but then has no qualms about leaving the apartment completely after a call from Beckett.
Beckett was enjoying the prospect of surprising Castle when he arrives at the school; it was very cute to see. Castle is a show that is full of great moments; I love how Ryan hands the remote control to Castle, who then hands it to E, and the look that E gives him in return. Also the little smile that Castle gives, as E hands him some gloves as he enters the victims’ apartment. It is here that we get our first movie reference, “Capricorn One” – with a winter land twist!
Back at the precinct Castle brings Beckett coffee from the machine and wants to know if she has read it yet. “It” of course being “Heat Wave” Beckett says why no she hasn’t had time yet, boy does she love playing him and as she tells him later in the episode “God you’re easy”. Another great moment is Ryan and his “bad back” fooling E into doing all the heavy lifting, the looks exchanged all round just make the scene. More movie references with “The Sting” and such as the team settle down with Pizza. All except Beckett, I love the way she pats both Ryan and E on the back as leaves them for the night. Beckett has an appointment with a certain book and a life saving bathtub in a beautiful looking scene.
Beckett plays Castle again the following morning after he interrupts her work out. Castle jealous? Ha, double ha! It is worthy of noting that Castle is so much part of the team at this point that he has no hesitation in bringing an idea to Ryan and E, and they in turn have no hesitation about investigating that idea. The scene that follows about Jerry Finnigan and the type of gun is reminiscent of a scene we will later see in “Nikki Heat”. And in both cases it is E and Beckett involved in the exchange. And of course “shut the front door”, love it.
Upon questioning Beckett tells Castle that she doesn’t believe people can change, but by the end of the episode she has conceded some ground. That bodes well for her future with Castle and her belief in him. The C.I.A twist to the case leads to several lovely exchanges between our DD. “my guy in the C.I.A” why is Beckett surprised. I loved how Beckett recognised dialogue from “Storm Warning”, always good to get a hint of the fan girl. And Beckett wins the dollar bet!
Another moment I love is the way Castle looks away as Lanie slides “Fletcher” out in the morgue, a good lay person reaction.
The case winds up and Beckett tells Elise “you made him (Fletcher) want to be a better man”. I think there’s a lot of that going around. Beckett finally gets a moment to herself and can’t wait to go looking for the scene that agent Gray mentioned was so steamy. She is so busted by Castle, who promptly tells her she is looking for page 105 and leaves her to it, and after a moment of feeling mortified at being caught out Becktett goes straight to said page. “Fool Me Once” is really enjoyable episode.

Yes, she got caught. In the Ladies Room. After hours. Couldn't wait until she got home?

I was thinking… these re-watch threads really show how OCD manifests itself differently in people…

Now for my input from my therapy session… [Image Can Not Be Found]

-  I love the whole set up of "Appearances can be deceiving" thing with Dillon vs. Olga.  I had a piano instructor in college that could have been Olga.  I *never* saw anyone looking like Dillon in the music school…

- Castle knows his NYC – Classic Upper West Side architecture.

- Firefly Shout out – 2 by 2 – Hands of blue

- Castle hands Beckett coffee but she doesn't seem to expect it yet.

- I think this is the first "Feed the Birds"

- I love how Castle gets into Patty's story quicker than Beckett.  She just sees a crazy woman with nothing to offer the case.  Castle sees the story that the woman wants to tell.  It's also where he gets some insight into the "character" of the criminal they are trying to catch.  It's his forte, the strength he brings to the team.  He's building a set of traits and fitting them together – when one doesn't make sense,  it's like Beckett finding the odd sock.  It triggers a line of thought that leads him to believe that Fletcher may have changed his lifestyle for love. (Odd sock – the clue that appears out-of-place… sorry that's a Nikki Heat reference.  Does that make this post too meta?  [Image Can Not Be Found])

- Castle pumps the guys for info about Beckett's private life and gets nothing back from the guys.  Are they covering up?  Nope, she's not a sharer.  It's the first time Castle has showed his hand a bit.  THe boys tease him, but later on Esposito especially will have his back on this issue.

- Beckett-ism – Shut the front door.  We'll hear that again too and we'll find out that it's from her high school days.  Does this mean Beckett is loosening up a bit?  She's used a phrase from her wild child high school days…  hmmm…

- Castle again uses his expertise in a certain area -  talking father-to-father to get more information about Fletcher's relationship with Elise.

- Beckett may be playing the boys with her professed hatred of con movies, but she really does believe these guys can never change.  Her job has put in in contact with too many of the "repeat offenders" that she talks about.  Her pessimism is grating at times.  And despite evidence to the contrary that this man may have changed, she
keeps coming back to the fact that he scammed little kids.  She in
single-minded, caring about clearing *this* case.  She shuts herself off from avenues of thought with her black-and-white view of the world.  It's Castle natural optimism that lets him be open to people changing and it's a lesson Beckett needs to learn if the two of them are ever going to have a chance.  But boy does she take her time learning it!

- Agent Gray is not what Beckett expected – and Dillon wasn't what Castle expected. Hmmm… that dad thing gets in the way, doesn't it He-Touches-Things.  So when Alexis interrogates her dad – she tells him what he has been trying to get Beckett to do all along…  Accept something based on something more than appearance.  Castle learns his lesson the hard way and Beckett is watching.  I wonder is that what makes her more open to learning it too?

- Best line – "I hate this case…"  "I know!  Isn't it great!"  Castle just *loves* the story!

- And finally, once again, Castle is apologizing.  He's learned that lesson.  He asks for forgiveness for his actions.  But he goes one step further with Alexis and asks her to be patient with him.
