OnlineObservations while rewatching When the Bough Breaks
An interesting case, but the 'B' plot is where the real action happens.
Paula sure looks hot – at 7 AM! A 3 book deal about “A Certain British Secret Agent”? (sounds like James Bond theme)
Boy, the gang sure was hard on Castle when he finally showed up at the crime scene. Teasing him with wilder stories than Rick has even spun. And he gets sucked in – almost – twice, three times? (sounds like X-Files theme)
Have I said how much I like Perlmutter's occasional appearances?
Castle: “A Czech mate” He does like his puns.
We see the Castle the boy again, showing a Matryoshka doll to Detective Karpowski. He is capable if such innocent, child-like wonder and enthusiasm. But Kate is being a grownup and sounds mildly irritated. Capt. Montgomery is clearly enjoying this, watching Rick’s interactions, while bringing up his next book. Next book? I wonder if it really was the mayor’s idea this time. We now know that it was really Roy who kept Castle around for Beckett’s good, so he just might be using the mayor as cover to defuse Kate’s objections.
What’s up with Rick’s fascination with the soap-flavored lollipops?
What an ego-busting pair of comments about Rick’s book launch. Alexis & Taylor want to go and meet boys, while Martha wants him to advertise her play. I thought book launch parties were about the author and his new book. Then Martha says that Kate will be relieved to not have him shadowing her around. He looks lost, thinking about that, like he can’t believe it.
Back at the station, we see that Rick & Kate really do work well together, in spite of her apparent superiority at him suggesting things while she was a half-step ahead of him.
The interview with Teodore Hyak was quite well done. This guest actor, to me, was superb.
Ryan barely gets to sit down in the break room when Beckett says “Let’s go”. His face…
It took Kate a while to ask Rick about “the other book”. A classic time of talking past each other, thinking they are talking about the same thing. When Rick mentions the “certain British secret agent” offer, Kate doesn’t look or sound relieved. She looks more confused – like she can’t decide what she should feel. Even though she chafes under Rick’s attention, there is something about it that she kinda likes, and that is confusing her. She can share in Rick’s pending success, while being disappointed that he would be moving on, but she is not able to admit it yet.
Two words: “Open Bar”
Rick is generous in sharing the fruits of his success with his friends, without copping a superior attitude. It seems that this is Nathan’s natural trait, too. And not just Nathan, but the entire cast and crew, too.
Rick is still signing women’s chests.
Is that the *real life* author of the Nikki Heat books sitting with Rick in the corner?
Kate is STUNNING in that dress. Castle is happy to see her. She really is a pretty special girl, as Paula says. She surely must be, for Rick to be so distracted that he doesn’t return Paula’s calls. He says “I don’t know if I’m ready to walk away from Nikki Heat” “The one on the page, or the one standing over there…?” He says “the one on the page”, but we know better. She tells him to go get it out of his system, like THAT’S going to work…
There’s an unguarded moment where Rick & Kate just start to let their mutual attraction show, but it closes pretty fast. They are not ready yet. So Rick breaks the spell with the case. Then asks “What man has ever turned you away?” What man, indeed? The sudden release of tension results in a lovers’ spat. Can anyone say “Mood whiplash?” The push-pull game is in full swing.
In the car, when the reality of Rick’s leaving starts to be felt, Kate begins to look lost. Like Rick’s irritating presence has been giving her some direction by giving her something to resist. She looks like she doesn’t know how to go back to life Before Rick.
Then at the close, another moment of transparency between the two of them. They get SOOO close… but neither one can close the deal, so to speak. A handshake… Gaaa…! Interrupted by phone calls. The “certain British secret agent” deal is off, more Nikki Heat is a better offer.
The fight that they love is back on. And so is the love that they are fighting.

I love that.
This episode remains one of my favorite of the series, partly because it centers around Rick's world as well as Kate's, but also because the book launch scene (and especially the final scene) can still get my heart racing in anticipation even though I know all too well that both were missed opportunities for Castle and Beckett.
That final scene was so well-played from the disappointment and sense of expectation that filled their parting, to the awkwardness of the build-up to the handshake that should have been more, to the hilarity of the Beckett's feined outrage and Castle's fear of her wrath during simultaneous phone calls. A perfect scene.

This reminds me of something G.K.Chesterton wrote: "Marriage is a duel to the death which no man of honour should decline."

I think on this show the 'B' plot is always the 'A' plot.
Written by Rene Echevarria and directed by John Terlesky “When the bough breaks” is another episode that is on a lot of favorite lists, it is certainly on mine.
It is the first time that Castle and Beckett have the opportunity, or maybe are forced to consider their partnership; If it has a future or if they want it too.
Castle has enjoyed his time at the precinct and being around Beckett, but with the arrival of Paula, who turns up unannounced on his door step at 7am to not talk about something, he is immediately interested in “the certain British secret agent”. Would he toss Nikki Heat aside to fulfill a boyhood dream.
And what of Beckett? first she is upset when she thinks he will be writing a second book, before talking to her about it. Then she is upset when she thinks he is moving on. There are a lot of emotions swirling around here.
Was this Karpowski’s last appearance? I would like to see her again. This episode had a very nice performance by the actor playing the real father, touching.
Twice in the episode Castle and Beckett are talking at crossed purposes, first when Beckett finds out about the new book offer, and again famously at the Nikki Heat opening. Castle believing that no man would ever turn Beckett away and her reaction is telling. Also when Castle asks her if he should take the offer, Beckett does not say yes or no, she says “is there a reason why you wouldn’t” “So you’d be OK if I didn’t write another Nikki Heat” “why wouldn’t I” she says and so on. Even this early she is looking to Castle to show his hand more that he is willing or able to do. So this time as happens in later episodes they turn to anger and words best left unsaid.
Loved it when Castle thanked Beckett for using Irony correctly.
And Beckett’s reaction almost teams, when Castle says he is leaving something of himself behind.
Beckett thanks him at the end of the case, a first. And the goodbye, no hug?, no kiss on the cheek? Even before the phone call. Again Castle the wordsmith can’t find the words.
3 book deal – you coming or what!

OfflineThis episode is another one of my favorites.
- I love the opening – it looks like Castle is having an early morning liaison – are we surprised that we're *not* surprised? THen we find out who she is… Oh… you mean he doesn't… he isn't… hmmmm…
- I love watching Paula watch Castle – she's sizing him up like she does a business deal. What's it going ot take to get this through. That little bit of victory on her face when he blows off Beckett's call… priceless. But she's the money, the package, not the art. She could care less what he writes as long as he writes. Unanswered phones give her "agita" – she's definitely not the wordsmith in that relationship.
- I love Perlmutter too. It's kind of funny how he snaps at Ryan but seems to react more kindly to Beckett.
- Castle is late to the party and they sure do give him grief for it. And given in propensity for storytelling and wild theories, they almost get him going a couple of times. But he's missed the body – already the "certain British Secret agent" is impinging on his Beckett time.
- Lollipops that taste like soap – something totally off the map – just how Castle's like things
- In this episode the part of Yenta will be played by two characters – Roy Montgomery and Martha Rogers – act one – Roy yanking Beckett's chain about the second book. Act two it's Martha yanking Castle's chain about his "little book" and then not doing anymore Nikki Heat books and Beckett's *obvious* relief. Both Yentas get the rise they want and more evidence of an attraction between the two.
- I love the chase in the restaurant – Castle gets in Ryan's way then goes after Beckett but only after slowing down just enough to taste something – Beckett and the boys are all business but Castle stops to smell the roses (or taste the mousse).
- Once they have Teodore, Castle seems to connect with him. He's using the Beckett victim pose with him. This is a guy who potentially had a abusive relationship with his wife which would normally set Castle off, but instead Castle sees something in the man even before the story about the son is told. He's less nice to Dr. Talbot, sitting upright and judgemental.
- Beckett and Castle are completely off their game when it comes to each other. I like to see them so wrapped up in a moment (whether its anger or not) and not their public selves. I can almost hear the banter in season 7 (yes I'm a Castlesque optimist) based on all the missed chances after they both have their Duh moment.
- Beckett is looking closely at the boy. She's already seen Teodore's picture of the baby that died. We can almost see the wheels turning as she files away impressions.
- Must amend HTT's comment above and descend into … wherever for a second… "Open bar" *and* Castle in sunglasses…
- The book launch party – Castle arrives with his favorite redheads on his arm – not the latest flavor of the week – is this his usual, has something already changed or is he (or his publicist) hoping he "find" a date *at* the party? Then Roy has his second Yenta moment and Beckett picks up *her* book, because we all know it's really for her and sees the dedication. I love the expression on her face – opening a book and seeing her favorite author has dedicated it to her. The lover's spat that Beckett picks come out of his cockiness at being the center of attention and her inability to take or give a compliment, among many other things. The music says it all there and how it cuts off. Geez, they are frustrating!
- The conversation in the car is different though, almost as if they are both trying to take back some of the nastiness that managed to get said out loud. It's still cockiness on his part and snarkiness on hers, but the volume is dialed back and the undercurrent of caring is able to show. It's a really beautiful scene in the midst of a very disturbing case (at least for me).
- Castle's forte is his outside-the-box thinking and he gets his chance again with the thoughts on DNA testing. It makes that little scene before with the playground clues that Beckett has already thought of seem kind of poignant and pathetic. He was trying to hard to be useful there, as if to prove (to whom?) that he *was*useful to the team. But when he has is brain storm about the lollipop and the DNA testing, he is back to true Castle, and Beckett is the first to ask what he's got for her investigation. She may snark and roll her eyes, but she only does that it seems when he's fooling around with his theories. Once he's really on to something, his demeanor changes and she reads that well a reacts to it.
- The line that gave me chills watching in retrospect – Paraphrase: "Sokol got the job at the hospital to find the truth and then it cost her her life" – hunting for the truth can get you killed, Kate.
- The scene with the Mom and the biological dad made me tear up – That little boy has had tragedy in his life, but see those two adults putting aside whatever they are feeling for his best interests made me smile too. It was a beautiful scene.
- The end scene – It's starts with a rarity, Beckett telling Castle thank you and giving him a compliment with no left-handed spin about doing the Secret Agent book proud. He compliments her back (which is his norm) and they are at such a nice (if awkward) place. Would the handshake have been all if their respective phones hadn't rung? But they do ring – darn those pesky interruptions! The mood whip lash (love that phrase!) says is hilarious, especially Castle's fear-filled face as he is talking into and trying to hang up the phone. Beckett is on a tear – look out! But then a body drops – yea for *that*interruption! - and she's off to what she does best…. oh, and are you coming Castle?

OnlineJust rewatched this one (5th or 6th time????) Loved it all of them. Loved Paula, the British secret agent and the background music, the whole Castle might be leaving and its affect on Beckett, the book launch and the awkward conversation and the ending…all great!
I didn't even mind the baby swap except for 1 glaring thing – Sophomore bio – blue-eyed parents having brown-eyed children are rare, albeit possible, and both the Talbots were blue eyed. The doctor father knew why but was the mother totally ignorant of a basic genetic premise? The hair thing is much less a strong genetic trait. The 'real' father of Zach was so well played! Such a gentle, caring man.
