OfflineI think some people didn't like Famous Last Words because it's not very shippy. Too many people are wanting just the Castle/Beckett relationship and hate when we don't get a "cherries" moment or what have you.
I loved the episode! It showed how caring Castle can be and the fact that Beckett likes to see him in that role. Plus, both of them caring about Sky was sweet. And the ending was perfect!
Looking at the numbers, considering how low the lead-in was, and the everything else was new, it's not as bad as it could have been.

OfflineFamous Last Words was not my favorite episode, but it was still good. Personally, my least favorite was "To Kill the Messanger" (wasn't that the name?) I felt that Famous Last Words was stronger than that one, though I actually had a different take on why others didn't like it: having Alexis hanging around and being informed about all of this information that should have been classified was kind of a stretch. It didn't bother me, but in reading some other sites/posts about the episode, this seemed to be a bone of contention for a lot of fans.

my least favourite this season was also kill the messenger. i just felt like after such a great episode (vampire weekend) the two after (famous last words and kill the messenger) weren't as great. by no means did i think they were terrible, but just felt less than amazing.

That's not why I think it's the weakest episode so far. I don't mind if I don't get shippy moments. I just thought the whole case was not very interesting to me. Plus, the whole sister cleaning up her act seemed too rushed and forced for a happy ending.
There were some good parts, but overall it didn't really work as well (for me) as the other episodes this season.

I can understand that Famous Last Words might not be some follks favorite: The underlying theme that led to Haley's murder can be very unsettling. Also, the emphasis on drugs and that culture might affect viewers attitude toward the episode.
Having said that, I consider Famous Last Words very engaging and extremely well done: Enlisting Brianna Haynes to play Haley Blue and … I can't say enough about Anna Waronker and her song Threshold. The words are amazingly well-written and fit the plotline like a glove. For several days the song has been playing in my mind. I think that is high praise indeed.
BTW, this episode was written by Jose Molina. It is definitely darker than usual. The music tie-in that's a part of this episode is on a par with the artistic tie-in with Vampire Weekend using original artwork by Jason Badower. Bottom line: The team that brings us Castle thinks outside the box and are using all the innovative methods that they can (as in the whole Nikki Heat/Heat Wave thing).

I agree, the Castle team is very outside the box and creative. There is also the WriteRCastle twitter account, the Ryan Report blog, they set up a website for The Blue Pill Band, that looked like a real band website and also for Vixen from Vampire Weekend. Pretty creative and fun stuff.
