Mixed feelings about this ep, but I truly enjoyed the relationships between the established characters very much. And, I thought they were expertly directed by Mr. Frakes.
No real sense of Castle/Beckett here, except for the one nod to the No/Not Yet answer (love that they have running jokes so early in the run of this show!), and as usual the leads are charismatic and entertaining.
I think the real winner this time was Ruben Santiago-Hudson. He was EXCEPTIONAL in this ep, truly engaging and he totally PWNED that scene with the senator in his office. I actually whooped with glee when he handed him his rear end. Beautifully acted.
Also fantastic was that little subtle moment of hero-worship for Ryan, when Montgomery says "They didn't put me behind this desk just because I look good," or something like that. It was an ACE moment, I loved it. Seamus Dever made a fantastic face.
And of course, Susan Sullivan was just beautiful. I hope I am that stunning when I'm her age, but then, I'm absolutely sure she's not actually old enough to be his mom! GO MARTHA.
I know the whole point of a detective series is to have cases to solve, but honestly I just have so much fun watching the ensemble cast riff off of each other that they could just make the show about them, and I'd be happy!

I liked the case in this one- kept me guessing. When I saw Gregg Henry on the screen (Winston), I just knew he was gonna be the bad guy. Whoops!
Definitely agree that Montgomery and Martha were excellently awesome tonight.
Did anyone else giggle when they were talking about the 'Caskett?' Hahahaha.

Aw, c'mon…. now you're just being silly
Yep, I'll join in and praise tonight's ep for the greatness of Montgomery and Martha. Really nice to see that, hope we'll get some more in the coming episodes The case was interesting, and I for sure thought it was Winston who killed her! Nice twist, but the mother was kind of a lame ending. I mean it's classic, she has to "protect the family" as it were… she had the most (her legacy) to lose. Would've been a nice twist if someone killed her because they thought her and Winston were having an affair or sth…
Anyway, it wasn't one of my favorite eps, but definitely a good one. Loved the "My Face" thing, really funny how that's true about those social networking sites, esp Facebook. You get all kinds of weird friend requests from people you haven't heard from in ages. Then you wonder "do I accept, or do I ignore?"
The only problem I had was with Perlmutter. Is he supposed to be an ass? I dunno, I just found myself getting kinda pissed at him.
Loved that magnifying glass line, though :D
Overall, pretty good. Solid. Hopefully next week's will be even better.

Yes, I am being silly.
Maddarilke, who knows? It would be quite the coincidence if it were, imho. (Oh yeah, and welcome!!)
Aw, am I the only one who likes Perlmutter? Don't get me wrong, I got nothing but love for Lanie, but he's so grumpy and crotchety- he cracks me up. Castle said it best last week. "There's a reason he works with dead people." So true…

Thanks for the welcome. Yeah, I agree with our mod, Ruben Santiago-Hudson was terrific in this. Solid acting, and I love how he said "dirtbag" again, nice consistency. Love his "old school" way of never letting go of a case, and doing things right. I also like how he's really seeing how well Castle & Beckett work together, and how excited Castle got that he's now "expected" to go out with Beckett to look for info.
Also really loved Ryan's little moment, where he obviously really looks up to Montgomery. Nice.

This was another solid episode, but it actually ranks pretty low on my list of favorites. The simple reason is there was very little interplay between Castle and Beckett. I don't mind it when the story focuses on the case of the week, but I vastly prefer it when the case of the week is the secondary aspect of the episode. Basically, Castle and Beckett's relationship didn't advance at all in this episode, and I think that's a shame.
That being said, even a "weak" episode of Castle is better than everything else on TV. Jonathan Frakes did an outstanding job of showcasing characters that have had a lesser role so far, and I can't wait to see him direct another episode or two.
The halloween episode actually advanced the relationship quite a bit, and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes from there. I'm not sure if has been commented on before, but in the scene that Beckett interrupts Castle when he's reading the graphic novel, she slides on the desk and bumps his feet with her tush. Up until that point, when there is contact between them (such as the dancing in the episode with the jewel thieves) it is always uncomfortable for her. It was in this episode that that changed. She's comfortable enough with him to not only allow contact, but she's actually initiating it. Not only that, but they're moving into each other's personal space more and more. Enough for him to realize she smells like cherries.
It would be a shame if Castle became just another procedural, but I don't think that's going to happen. Compared to some shows, the relationship between the two characters is proceeding at a breakneck pace. As long as the writers keep that up, the fans will keep piling on.

the captain rocked this one for sure. I found the case itself a bit confusing, so I'll just have to watch it again! I must say as a Nathan fan, he looked pretty darn nice in this episode – different somehow – maybe more relaxed and rested. I loved Martha with Facebook – such a great way to advance her character in a very real-world way. I really love all of these characters & can see how the writers are slowly building the personalities week-by week, adding just a few juicy bits to keep it interesting. We could use an episode with some serious police action that puts our heroes in some danger. This would ramp up the tension and get the action moving.
A Christmas special would be really sweet

I thought it was an okay episode. The episode was case heavy with Montgomery and even Martha getting good screen time. The story was well written and directed too.
Looking more forward to next week's episode though.

A some of you have already mentioned…Ruben stole the show yesterday IMO. Loved MArtha and the myface account!! haha. The episode was very engaging overall.
However, where is LAnie….I'm getting worried. I like Ayre Gross (liked him since he was Adam on the sitcom "Ellen") but I want Tamala back!! I miss her scenes with Beckett.
Not a lot of say…wish there was more BEckett and Castle romance…..

Admin, do you know something we don't?
Much like Admin, I suspect we'll get a "real advance" into the Castle-Beckett relationship during this next episode. I believe this is where they mention that Alexis goes to Beckett for "some important reason." I think having Alexis become more involved with Beckett is the ticket to a closer relationship between Beckett and Castle. Alexis seems to be "the thread" that moves Castle from Playboy to responsible adult. And, it is the "responsible adult" that is attractive to Beckett, NOT the playboy. That Beckett could assist Alexis in some capacity when Alexis won't go to her Dad will likely create a bond of some kind between Alexis and Beckett whereas before Alexis is only connected to Beckett thru her Dad's interaction with Beckett.
As for this week's episode, Stana has stated in several interviews that this season they would "let other characters shine" and I think this episode did just that. Montgomery was the real focus, with Martha as a 2ndary main player with the whole facebook issue. The writers threw us a bone with the "not yet"/"No" exchange between Castle and Beckett to maintain their interplay, but left their relationship in a kind of "hold pattern", which is actually pretty smart. They are advancing this relationship slowly, over time, and some pieces of that time will just be savoring the Previous episode's advance, rather than directly moving the relationship forward. I think we saw a major advance in the Castle Beckett relationship last week, so this week was merely a "reiteration" of that previous advance, and that made it an excellent time to let other characters shine. I doubt they'll do two (other characters shining) episodes in a row and likely they will advance the B-C relationship in those episodes where the B-C relationship is the primary focus.
Just my opinion

Totally agree with you Blackfel, solid episode with a holding pattern for C-B but others had a chance to shine.
Wow, how did I missed this part?: "I'm not sure if has been commented on before, but in the scene that Beckett interrupts Castle when he's reading the graphic novel, she slides on the desk and bumps his feet with her tush."
Beckett is starting to show Castle her personal side and less of the serious dectective role.
Great job writing team!

I pretty much agree with what everyone else has said.
Montgomery and Martha were awesome tonight. What a beautiful way to let them shine. The captain handing the senator his butt was great. I knew something was coming when he smiled at Beckett (after she made some pfft comment) and said let's hear him out. And while it may be silly I've waffled back and forth about whether accepting a friend request from old friends.
I loved that I didn't know who the killer was. I guessed two times and was wrong. While it wasn't some huge twist the killers are not as obvious (to me at least) to me as they were last season.
While it was great to see a couple of the other characters shine it was a bit strange to have Castle and Beckett take a back seat if you will. It worked but it was still strange. They've done such a great job with the relationship this season I don't mind not having them progress every week. I think we're in for a wild ride no matter what time table they've set.
I'm forever going to have the image of Beckett's face when she realizes Esposito got the wrong name. Not to mention the 3 guys drinking tea with cats running all over them.
I love this show so much.

I thought the whole "No/Not yet" line was a good indication that we have quite a while before we see anything resembling a romance between these two. This was proof positive that Rick is still nowhere near ready for the kind of relationship Kate (and the show) deserves.
This is fiction, and the odds of the producers ending this show without these two together are about as good as the odds were that J.K. Rolling would kill off Harry Potter. We can also assume they will be getting together for the so-called "right reason": because they love each other. However, despite a few authenitc, tender moments on Rick's part, Kate is still largely a challenge for him — a conquest if you will, though not necessarily in purely sexual terms. I have no doubt he's looking for more than a one-night stand with her, but his chief motivator is not yet his feelings for her, but rather his own ego.
The "not yet" comment combined with his affirmative response last week that Ryan and Esposito were interrupting something, shows us that he is actively and unabashedly pursuing Beckett. He wants to start a relationship, but at this point, he can't possibly see it as anything more than any other relationship he's ever started — all of which ended in failure. He wants to be with her for selfish reasons — namely that he's attracted to her, and she's the only woman to consistently reject him. Kate knows this, which is why she's rejecting him. Until Rick's motives become a little more pure — and Kate come to trust those motives — we'll be seeing a lot more of this infamous UST.

But J.K. Rowling did technically kill off Harry Potter!
Not only did I love the "Absolutely not/Note Yet" comment, but I love both of their faces during it. And the fact that they don't look at each other.
I also loved during the scene when Castle was explaining about why he knows all about caskets he says to Beckett "But of course you already know that." Refering to her being obessed with his books, hehe.
