OnlineAnyone up to rewatching and discussing Ep. 1x01 Flowers for Your Grave with what we know after the 3 seasons? It may be fun to discuss each episode in light of the story & character developments we have seen. We have enough time until the start of Season 4 that we can spend 2 days on each episode.
Any one up for it?

OfflineI rewatched the pilot about a week about when I realized if I watch one episode every other day I'll get through the entire series right before season 4 starts.
It's pretty incredible going back and watching. Even the little things like Beckett and Espositos desks are kind of in a nook at the beginning of the show instead of in the middle of the bull pen. It's also pretty amazing how much Molly has grown up. She looked like a little girl. At my rate I'm going to watch "A chill…" tomorrow.

OfflineSince I only got to know about Castle later but after seeing this pilot I was hooked because it stood out to the rest. Having re-watched it a couple of times I started to understand that it was the start of some of the big arcs. After Beckett taunting Castle you just knew this only would get better. (being the sucker for rom-com anyway)

OnlineThe very first thing I noticed this time was Kate's face when she was walking into the murder scene. It looked like she was determined to solve this while being bored at the same time. It was a reminder of Montgomery's telling her that she "wasn't having any fun" until Castle came along. She looked like it for the first 2/3 of the episode.
Later I saw expressions of puzzlement mixed with irritation whenever Rick made a good point that moved the investigation along, like when he said Mr. Tisdale was dying, and now they had grounds to talk with the brother. Throughout the episode there is a gradual, subtle softening of Kate's demeanor toward Rick.
I also saw Martha as far more immature than I thought. In this episode she is pretty blatant about reclaiming and holding onto her wild ways, and rather daring in her clothing choices. She has matured significantly during her stay with Rick & Alexis. It's like she is finally connecting with a stable family life that she never had herself.
Any other observations?

OfflineIf you pay attention, there the detective "Not Ryan" and the Detective Kevin Ryan.
Not Ryan goes somewhere with Esposito, and when we arrive afterwards, Not Ryan isn't there and Kevin Ryan is. (Happens 3 or 4 times).
Agree on the observation that when Castle makes a "discovery" that moves the investigation forward, Beckett gets more anoyed.
Who would go running down any NYC street barefoot, let alone an alley!!
And there's the all important "cold read" of Beckett – and her response – "Don't think that means you know me" because for how far they have come, she says the same think in KNOCKOUT – during "the Talk" – Beckett: "You don’t know me Castle. You think you do, but you don’t." I still think she's wrong on this account. I'm not saying he know EVERYTHING about her, but he knows her in many regards better than she knows herself.
Then there's those 4 little words said by Beckett that really fuel the "chase" – You Have No Idea!
There defiantly has been physical changes in most of the characters: Castle – now looks older – his face has filled out, Stana – has grown up – partially due to hair style change, Esposito – had hair!, Ryan – face has aged, Alexis – duh – she was 14/15 when started and now is 16/17 maybe even 18 – no longer a "little girl". Captain Montgomery and Martha look about the same (Martha's clothes are not as "far out" now as in the beginning).
Attitudes:
Captain Montgomery: you can tell that he enjoyed bringing Castle into the precinct – and NOT giving Beckett her way for a change ("Captain, can I have a word with you in private?" … No! … and then you could see her almost pouting about not getting her way)
Castle: Hey, look at me, I'm cool – and cocky – and used to getting my way and I have friends (mayor, judge) that can help smooth the way for me
Beckett: oh so annoyed at having to let Castle follow her around. But by the end his "cocky attitude" was winning her over (who says the girls don't like the "bad boys" – Beckett included). Also she makes it clear that she does not have a personal life (who says romance is dead …. "I do, every Saturday night" … a little lipstick…)
Martha: over the top "wild child" – on the prowl and "plays" inebriated
Esposito: just the facts, just get the job done
Ryan: really can't get a read on him in this episode since "Not Ryan" was around most of the time during character development time
Lanie: the only time we have heard that she too is a fan of Castles books
Alexis: Started off as "the adult in the room" – so I guess no change – we've seen "previews of coming attractions" this season, I expect season 4 to show her not so much the adult, and by contrast, Castle will become more of a real parent rather than best friend and worried dad.

I read somewhere that Montgomery's "Nope" response was not in Stana's script, and they filmed her natural reaction to Reuben's unexpected cutoff.

Offlineyesterday night, after viewing for the nth time knockdown I started to rewatch the most beatiful moments of the three series, starting by the pilot.
I feel a warmth in my heart watching what Castle and Beckett had become. Expecially Kate's character.
In the pilot she was really blocked in her character, the though and practical female cop.
I was amazed thinking how much I liked her haircut back then and how much I like more her actual haircut now. It's kinda weird. Her make-up too is changed, we dont see no more an heavy make-up on her cheeks.
I'm really more confortable with what beckett is now.
Her character changed more than Nathan's: Castle's character yet by the second episode was less raw.
I hated the short beard, anyway.
And Ryan and Esposito too. The fight in the alley in knockdown was unthinkable in that first ep (and the shirt and jacket Ryan wear in the alley? So Irish bro!)
And I think we'll miss Montgomery: in that first ep he was the mentor we learn to appreciate. His "spot" is hard to replace with a new character.
Martha was the middle aged woman seeking for a wealthy husband, and now she's the bringer of wisdom.
Alexis grew up because Molly grew up: that is amazing.
I personally really like what Castle and Beckett had become, and I liked watching them become what they are now: it's like a family for me.
Finally, a word for TPTB, thanking them for bring to us an actress like Stana Katic: unknown to all and now such a lead. No Emily Deschanel can even get near.

OnlineI've always loved the pilot, don't know how many times I've watched it. Most notable for me-
But first.

I don't see boredom at, never occured to me. I see pure drive. Once again into the battle, to fight for the victim she is about to meet.
"Don't you guys read?" This line and Stana's delivery of it was what got me immediately hooked on the show.
Beckett and E's first talk when he questions why she reads murder mystery novels and her responce, we don't know Beckett's story yet but we now know she is one intriguing lady. It sets up the "read" scene with Castle beautifully.I love Beckett and E scenes so this first one is special. Then we got the bonus scene of them together along with the first Beckett and her murder board, when she begins to question the murder chain.
I've always loved the mirror scene to the one above of Castle and family in the Taxi and Castles first "if I was writing this" plus the allowance line from Alexis and Martha.
The first Beckett eye roll to Castles "I was never a boy scout" when Castle follows them into the suspects apartment.
The first time Beckett is impressed with Castles deductive reasoning when he notices Allison's father is ill. And then the first time Beckett has fun with him when Castle doesn't pick up on the fact that the brother was lying. She's starting to enjoy this just a little.
The final chase scene from Castles "tell me you saw that!" to Kate's push "you could have got yourself killed", "the safety was on the all time" "you know you could have told me", "where's the fun in that".
And of course the final exchance and the walk away, has AWM has said if that scene dosen't work, they have no show. Boy did it work.
It's impressive really how many themes, language and gestures, large and small began in the pilot and have been carried through and expanded on. Yes looks have changed, characters have grown, but the essentials were there and very rich to begin with.
"Flowers for your Grave" was a wonderful beginning for our little show that could. Love it.

Although seeing that face, with Montgomery's line "You weren't having any fun…" in mind, I can now see it. That was a businesslike expression – it's pretty heavy and dark. Her face has a lot more light recently. Even when looking at Royce's body in L.A., there is a softer look, less closed-off, more in touch with her humanity. She's come a long way from where she was.

OfflineBear in mind everyone that this was the pulot episode and designed to most clearly convey who these characters are in an effort to convince TPTB that this show has merit and should be picked up for regular showings. Thus, all the characters will be a little more over-the-top because this was in a way a one-shot to get the show picked up. Once it is picked up, then the characters are scaled back a bit because there's more time to tell their back stories.
One thing that I noticed that I don't think has been explored in the series thus far is that not only Beckett is a fan of Castle's writing, but also Lanie. She says he has quite a gift for writing about murder, so it's clear she enjoys his books and is almost as much of a fan as Beckett.
Another part I really liked is the scene where Esposito tells Beckett he doesn't really want to read Castle's books because he deals with murder all day and wants to leave it at the station when he gets home. She looks back at him and asked whether or not he wants to know what makes people kill each other in such bizarre ways and he looks at her knowingly, as if he gets that she is motivated by something other than just solving Alison Tisdale's murder. Shows that he gets her on a level deeper than just partners.
But the "You've no idea" line still makes me giggle and Castle's cold reading Beckett still blows me away. No matter how many times I watch those scenes I still react like it's the first time.
