Bear in mind everyone that this was the pulot episode and designed to most clearly convey who these characters are in an effort to convince TPTB that this show has merit and should be picked up for regular showings. Thus, all the characters will be a little more over-the-top because this was in a way a one-shot to get the show picked up. Once it is picked up, then the characters are scaled back a bit because there's more time to tell their back stories.
As I understand it, Ep 1x01 was re-edited and fleshed out with additional scenes (including Det. Ryan being added) after the series was green-lighted. What we saw isn't exactly what the network saw initially. It's better IMO.
One thing that I noticed that I don't think has been explored in the series thus far is that not only Beckett is a fan of Castle's writing, but also Lanie. She says he has quite a gift for writing about murder, so it's clear she enjoys his books and is almost as much of a fan as Beckett.
That is something I also want to see.
Another part I really liked is the scene where Esposito tells Beckett he doesn't really want to read Castle's books because he deals with murder all day and wants to leave it at the station when he gets home. She looks back at him and asked whether or not he wants to know what makes people kill each other in such bizarre ways and he looks at her knowingly, as if he gets that she is motivated by something other than just solving Alison Tisdale's murder. Shows that he gets her on a level deeper than just partners.
But the "You've no idea" line still makes me giggle and Castle's cold reading Beckett still blows me away. No matter how many times I watch those scenes I still react like it's the first time.
Yeah. Especially the "That's why you are here" scene.
This is a great idea. I've just started watching from the beginning again and thought I might as well add my two cents worth.
I actually talked my 21yr old son into watching it with me. He's never watched it but he is always teasing me about being a Castle addict. So I put it to him that he can't really tease me if he doesn't know what it's all about and asked him if he wanted to watch it with me this time. He finally confided that he didn't really have anything against Castle, it was just fun to tease me about it. Hopefully there will be another Castle fan after he has watched all 3 seasons[Image Can Not Be Found]
We started watching tonight. This was probably my sixth or seventh time watching this episode and it is the first time that I have noticed the scene swapping between Ryan and that other guy. I took particular notice this time as it was mentioned by someone up thread a bit further. It's interesting seeing new stuff even after repeated viewing.
I think that they have all changed except perhaps Martha and the Captain. They all look younger. Castle is a bit thinner than he is now and Esposito has hair. Kates hair is darker and shorter and she seems more serious.
Castle comes across as a bit of an arrogant ass. He was bored with where his life was at that moment. He had just killed off his main character and I don't think he knew what he was going to do next. Then he meets Kate and she is not like the other women he knows but he tries it on anyway – "We could go to dinner and debrief each other" – and then with Kate's "You have no idea" you know that he is hooked. He won't be able to leave her alone.
I loved Ryan's "From the library of Katherine Beckett" line. There were several indicators throughout the episode that Kate is a fan of Castle but is kind of embarrassed to admit it.
And I really loved the ending scene when the Captain is telling her that Castle is a fan of hers and he needs to follow her around for a while to do research because he is basing his next character on her. The way she says "I'm flattered" is great, her expression says that she is anything but flattered, she looks more confused.
Great stuff.[Image Can Not Be Found]

In some ways Esposito's character is the least developed as we move into season 4. There is so much more they could do with it – he really comes from the traditional cop/military position and his desire to not let his life be consumed by the job has been complicated by the time we get to season 3 with his personal relationship with Lanie. He's a good enough actor that they can do something more with him next season (good progress in the alley with ryan in the finale of S3 though)… I love all his smiles and side glances.

I agree. One thing I'd love to see or find out about in the upcoming season is how Beckett, Ryan, and Esposito all came to work together. We know Esposito transferred to the 12th after he thought he lost his partner, but we don't know if he and Beckett got along from the get-go or not. And how long did they work together before Ryan came into the picture? Things like that.
i actually disagree with you. I think Ryan's is the least developed. Other than is relationship with Jenny and other assignments he's had in the department, we know little about him. Den of Thieves from season 2 gave us some kind of a window into Esposito's past.

We know from Hedge Fund that he had worked narcotics, and we see further hints up through Knockdown. But we don't know much else.

OfflineI just watched the first episode of season one again, from this episode to Knockout, the writing and the acting have grown and matured fast. The characters were well develop.
And after seing the season 3 finale, it got me thinking, does Andrew Marlowe misname the title of the show?? You can see after that cold read Castle gave Beckett, that this will be Kate Beckett's story..

This is why I'd like to see more of Castle's past explored this upcoming season. We still don't know exactly what got him writing in the murder-mystery genre among other things, like how living with Martha, a traveling Broadway actress, influenced him or his experiences in college besides dating Kyra.
Really Admin? The pilot was filmed a year before it was finally shown? Interesting.

OfflineI'm just gonna fill in here. This is my first day here so I'm sorry if I say things that are already said. [Image Can Not Be Found]
After watching all three seasons and talking about it with a friend, I found out about this site.
I've just watched the Pilot again and I do agree when people say Beckett's face gets more relaxed and less closed off while the seasons proceed. I like the way it's done, very subtle but also noticable.
And looking at the attitude of Castle, at first he was really full of himself and very flirty with women but that changes slowly to him being still a bit full of himself but not that much into women, just into Beckett. [Image Can Not Be Found]
And I also noticed that she says "That's actually really sweet", or something like it, quite a lot.

Welcome Tweetyj…glad you found the site and decided to jump into the discussion! I enjoyed your thoughts, and agree about the wonderful progression of the characters of Castle and Beckett.

And I think that they grew so much together (also) by growing individually if you know what I mean [Image Can Not Be Found]
