Observations while rewatching Hell Hath no Fury

Alexis seems quite interested in the budding relationship between Beckett & her dad, and looks fairly comfortable discussing it with him.

Kate sees that for all Castle's joking & teasing, he can hold it back when the situation is appropriate, like talking with Mrs. Horne the first time. ("Thank for not making it a joke." "I'm a wise-ass, not a jackass")

She seems secretly pleased while Rick starts to describe his new character: "She's going to be really smart, very savvy, haunting good looks, really good at her job… (She cracks a smile) … and kinda slutty." Later, at the book reading, she really is pleased with his new character, but is hiding it behind her protests about the name "Nikki Heat". Her protests do not come across as all that serious, but the start of the push-pull dance between the two of them that has become so engrossing to watch.

Lanie is the first one we hear telling Beckett that she isn't having much fun. "Take it from me, girlfriend, you need some fun." She is also the first to voice that Rick may be the one who can can give her that. She [Kate] deflects it, even though she can see the truth in Lanie's statements.

Rick's generosity is starting to become apparent, and the guys recognize it, although Kate avoids letting anyone know that she appreciates it, too. She sneaks her coffee when no one else is around (not even R & E) to avoid giving it away.

Castle calls out Kate on her being "Very good at bossing men around". Although he says it in a teasing voice, it is the truth – she has to be in control. Not just likes to be, but has to be in order to keep her job and her life in order.

R & E are entertained by the arguments between C & B, especially when Rick calls Tiffany to ask for "a date", then Kate protests that he "can't do that, we're the police." It's brief, but R & E are really enjoying watching that.

Does anyone else see anything in a new light?

I just wanted to point out the continuity of council men.  Did you notice in "Pretty Dead" that Baron's alibi was that he was having lunch with councilman Bowlinger?  I love seeing those things because it really shows that the writers care about the entire series and the little things.

Also… I agree with your observations.  This is really when it seems like this is the point where Beckett is starting to come around to Castle.

As this was written by AWM I guess it’s no surprise how well this episode reinforces the Castle pallet he is painting.
Its an unusual murder so naturally E and Ryan think of Beckett. And their (E and Ryan) banter really took off here with the road kill conversation.
The Castle/Beckett plays were all good in this one. And Martha too, poor Castle he’s no Harry Potter.
Even this early in we have upon questioning, Castle telling Alexis shadowing Beckett is ‘just research’ and we are as sceptical as Alexis. Maybe Castle already is starting to hide his feelings behind the work, even from himself.
Lanie telling Kate “you need more fun girl”. And Castle is just like the cappuccino machine, Beckett says it annoys her but she secretly wants it anyway.
Then we have Gina and the reinforcement here is all negative, so I still don’t buy Rick turning to her later on but that’s another discussion.
And the little things were great. The Chasing and even Castle walking into Beckett. This show does the little things so well.
It goes without saying the whole thing looked great as it was directed by RB.

I picked up on that too, after Pretty Dead aired.  Nice callback to the previous episodes.
The scene where Castle catches Beckett sneaking an espresso is awesome!  Shows off Stana's spot-on facial expressions.
While Beckett is not happy with Castle calling the prostitute, I'll bet her inner monologue said "Why didn't I think of that?" but she kept mad at him to make sure he knew he was on her turf.  Initially in their partnership, she couldn't stand it when he proved her wrong or had a better idea that led to the case being solved, but now she welcomes his input, even asks for it no matter how off-the-wall it may be (as evidenced in Knockdown).  Shows their growth as partners.

Just a couple of things, mostly from hindsight…

- the killer talking about how "releasing the photos will do irreparable harm to all the good (he) had done for this city"  sounds familiar – how one bad decision/action can wipe out years of good (in LAW and in KNOCKOUT).

- Ryan and Esposito may be partners but E is not above calling R away from the pretty hotel employee to take care of some drunks while he makes his own (smoother) move on the girl.

- The quote Alexis reads from The Ledger "…rise above and become the heroes we all imagined ourselves to be."  This is something I think deep down Castle wants to believe.  When you think about the change we see in him over the last 2.5 years, he is trying to do just that.  It makes me think about how he has managed to stay (somewhat) grounded an dout of the worst of what fame can do to a person.   Even at the beginning of the series we already get a glimpse of someting noble in him that he buries behind his playboy persona – the gentlemanly behavior towards the call girl is an example.  But it will take a Beckett to bring his inner hero out for good.

- There already seems to be a bit of reciporcal caring between Castle and Beckett .  In the car after Beckett delivers the news of the councilman's death to the wife, Beckett is silent, lost in her thoughts.  Castle asks if she's Ok, noting that "it can't be easy to deliver news like that".  He seems truly concerned for her.  Later in the same conversation, Castle is lost in his own thoughts about his final Derrick Storm book sales - Beckett sees his mood and asks if he is OK.  He makes his comment about being a wiseass not a jackass after talking about breaking the news, but Beckett also shows that she can lay off the teasing when she sees his depressed mood.  Their concern for eachother acts as bookends to the conversation – they are there for eachother, in a small way, in the beginning and the end.

- I love watching Castle watch Beckett interrogate other strong women and we see two in this episode – Tiffany the call girl and the wife.  Both times, Beckett loses and then regains the control of the interview, giving Castle a great show as she asserts herself and shows her strength.  You can see where he gets his idea for Nikki Heat's strong character.

- I also like the Martha and Alexis moments in this episode.  Martha's grounding of Castle does hurt him at the time, but he seems to bounce back from it pretty well with the help of Alexis.  He really needs both his redheads to stay on a even keel.

- I also like the relationship that has started to show between Alexis and Martha especially in the book store at the end as Martha pulls Alexis away from Castle and Beckett.  "But I want to hear…" Alexis says, but Martha already knows better and leaves C&B to themselves.  Alexis has already started interrogating her dad about Beckett and is curious but Martha already has them pegged and gives them space.

- And is it me or is Scott the cops who finds the wallet in a bunch of episodes?

I will have to watch for this more closely (yea! more Castle research) but it appears to me that Beckett "frequently" "zones out (I can't believe you cheated on your SO)"  OR gets angry / upset (YOU CHEATED!! – why should I believe you) in interrogations when there is infidelity involved. Fast forward to GAME where both Castle and Beckett are stunned when Roger's business partner's alibi is that he is sleeping with Roger's wife.

He's called LT later, he's in a bunch of episodes, and even carries Montgomery's casket.

I wish I knew how to quit you.

In my "extensive research mode" of viewing the episodes I ran across this tidbit…

Upon hearing an update of the case from Beckett and Castle, and the "missing" quarter of a million dollars, Captain Montgomery says something to the effect of … "How does an underpaid public servant get a quarter of a million dollars?"  Not that KNOCKOUT was even thought about way back here in season 1, we do have one "answer" – you kidnap mobsters and hold them for ransom. And then you give all of your ill-gotten money to the Dragon for his silence.

That is a good point.  Just like in When the Bough Breaks when Castle says she's never been scorned, she looks uncomfortable, then changes the subject.  And in the second episode of season 1, Castle writes that Nikki Heat had had her heart broken after seeing Beckett deal with the girl who was their murderer.  Are we to assume that Sorenson cheated on her?  Clearly someone must have otherwise, I agree, Beckett wouldn't be so sensitive.  Wait until she finds out Alexis's mother (the Deep Fried Twinkie) cheated on Castle.

Just rewatched this episode, and I have to say that I really miss how FUN the relationship with Castle and Beckett was here. Don't get me wrong, I love how it has developed, but here they have so much quality banter and sexual tension. They are also both on an equal footing- he's intrigued by her as the cop, he's her favourite author and they both tease each other.

I'm never really interested too much in the case, but I love all the little things that happen around the cases.

1. I loved just the little Caskett car conversations, so simple but it always told a little more about each of their characters.

2. GUESS WHO'S GOT A DATE WITH A PROSTITUTE! I swear that line never gets old, and neither does the charm he puts on to meet Tiffany.

3. Ryan talking to the woman and her saying she's in a relationship. LOL! I didn't even look to me like he was trying for her but it was hilarious, and then Espo distracts him and goes in for her too. It would have been interesting to see them fighting over a girl. I know its not likely to happen now in Series 4 with both their different relationships. However, maybe now (spoilers for Season 4 guys!!) Lanie and Esposito are broken up, we might see Ryan/Castle trying to set Esposito up, but then eventually realising Lanie's the only girl for him!

4. On the topic of Lanie, her conversation with Beckett was really cute. I miss Lanie a lot, and think some screen time could be shifted so that she gets a little more interaction, especially with Beckett. We need some out-of-the-Precinct interaction!

5. I loved Martha's dedication to helping her son when the book came out.

6. And lastly, when Kate turned up to the book-signing. Not too much a fan of the dress, but the way she strutted in and caught him completely off guard was perfect. I love seeing her "in his world" and I always hope theres more of that. Anyone else notice the guy she was talking to and then pretty much ditches when Castle comes over? Him fending her off with the cardboard cut-out of himself was hilarious! They seem to have much more of a physical banter here too, even previously in the episode when she was attacking him while he was on the phone.

Also I wanted to mention the hilarious moment in "Nanny Dead" when Castle investigated the bathroom and preceeded to walk past Beckett going "Condoms, condoms in the bathroom!" in a hushed whisper. Love
