Observations while rewatching A Chill Goes Through Her Veins

Now we see how Johanna's unsolved murder case colors Kate's murder investigations. She cannot let go of a case where a mom was murdered, and the kids don't know why. Even if they aren't aware that they don't know, Kate is determined that they will know the truth, More than they need to know, she needs to know. Kate also shows a low opinion of other detectives who do not push as hard as she does. Detective Sloan had hit a dead end in Melanie's case, based on what he had available at the time, and Detective Beckett was basing her opinion on fresh information that he didn't have. This, coupled with her own personal loss, caused her to be extra critical of Sloan, unfairly, in my opinion.

When the team is looking at the missing persons files, Ryan spins a tale too wild for even Castle, who has to bring them back to earth. There has to be a story that is believable, even for him.

Still love the laser tag scene, and Martha's line (at the door, in a green face-pack) "Are we entertaining?"

I finally noticed Kate's wide-eyed wonder the first time she enters Rick's apartment.

She isn't protesting the name "Nikki Heat" at all. Not even a hint of irritation.

Rick isn't bringing her coffee, yet, but she does steal his, over his faint protests.

When Kate overhears Rick on the phone with Alexis, she hides a smile. I think she likes what she hears, but no way will she let him know that.

Rick & Kate are settling into a comfortable bickering, even when asked "Are you two always like this?" they both answer "Yes."

I think we can see that Kate is starting to trust Rick with a few personal areas of her life, by telling him about her mom's murder, and the meaning of her mementos.

Esposito must trust Rick, too, for he leads him into the dead files to look at Johanna's murder file. He must think that Rick may be able to genuinely help Kate get some closure. Given that he (Espo.) has a brother-sister thing with Beckett, I doubt he would have done that if he suspected it would draw Kate back to her personal rabbit-hole.

Anyone else have fresh observations?

I am rewatching Castle starting at season 1 as well He-Touches-Things, but I am behind you quite a bit.  Just watched the pilot the other day.  I just wanted you to know that I love the postings you have started on the rewatches, and I'm enjoying your thoughts and the thoughts of others who have contributed!

I just rewatched this one the other day as well.  I had totally forgotten (or maybe just didn't catch it) that Esposito is the one who got Castle that file!  Interesting.

- They are starting to finish eachother's thoughts/sentences… the theory building scene in the kitchen of the apartment, keeper/dumper theory at the scene.

- Beckett accepts Esposito and Castle help down from whatever she's standing on when looking at the body instead of jumping down herself.

- Beckett shows Castle the more difficult part of her job – not being able to write the happy ending.

- I agree with the point about Beckett needing to get closure for those kids; especially when she is talking to the mistress and loses her composure over how long this woman waited to come forward.  It's an obsession for *her* but is it necessarily what *everyone* would want if they were found in that position?  It's the first hint that we see of Beckett being driven by forces that aren't necessarily in her control all the time.

- Beckett puts the detective sherriff *in* a box, pidgeon-holing him as a lazy cop who overlooks things because he doesn't think "outside the box".  She's so convinced that he was just packaging up a neat easy case that she doesn't think to question why he would question the lady about the freezer – a mistake that would have meant the killer of the husband would go free which is exactly what she was so upset about when talking about the sherriff. It's Castle who sees the discrepancy because he isn't blinded by the anger that Beckett feels for every child that loses a mother like she did. Castle is just what Beckett needs to get her to think *outside* her own box.

- Castle actually brings her back from escalating tensions when talking to the storage unit guy that dumps the body.  SUG:  What if it was a mob hit?  I got a family… B: (yelling) So did she!  After which Castle's calms Beckett with a hand on her arm, defuses the tension a bit and brings the interview back to getting facts.  Castle is just what Beckett needs to bring her back from the edge….

- I liked the way they used her ritual with the ring and the watch as bookends to the episode.  We knew there was going to be something special about those items.

- Another place where Beckett is asking about Castle's past marriages – C: some people love the institution; hate the day to day.  B: Are you one of those people Castle?  C:  Maybe I just haven't found the right girl yet…  (But he is only half teasing… 'cuz this is one of those electricity moments)  It makes us ask: Is Beckett just what Castle needs?

- There is actually a "cherries" moment right after the above lines.

- Castle referring to spending lots of time stranded in the NY Public Library.  We're getting little bits of the Castle onion in this episode.

- Cello music that plays during the time Beckett is talking about her mom and dad.  It's not the same theme as the music during Roy's speech in finale the Hanger scene, but it is very similar.  Both are haunting, but Roy's theme is a pattern of melody that made me feel like things were ending (do re do) …  Beckett's theme sounded more… hopeful.(do re fa) .  Sad, but hopeful.

- Which brings me to the my final impression – "until tomorrow… it's more hopeful… "  Castle the optimist, believer in unicorns and fairies and double rainbows…

…just what Beckett needs…

Some things I'd not seen mentioned yet:

-Beckett's barely contained smile at Castle thinking there is a face recognition database. And when the stacks of files are handed out she has a pile less then half of the others. Rank hath its privileges.

-Ryan trying to appear clever mentioning Schrodinger's cat in a completely wrong context. It did not help him much, getting stuck with all the paperwork as everyone left.

-Castle intruding on Beckett's personal space when reading the file first makes her look quite uncomfortable but the things he points out in the case get her focused on the file very quickly.

-Bill Smitrovich, who played the victim's father is the first fairly well known guest star for the show. In the DVD commentary Stana can't stop praising him.

-Ryan and Esposito make a breakthrough in finding the truck off-screen and by themselves. A welcome break from the usual format where everything must be discovered by the leads.

-The storage facitily owner does not want to get on the front page of The Ledger. In later episodes the New York Ledger features prominently as the main paper in the Castle universe.

-Castle lives in an expensive appartment which he would later call very secure but people can get to the door unannounced very easily.

-The scene in the car outside the father's home which I think is a very important moment. Castle says they can walk away from it, no one needs to know what happened. But Beckett won't do it, she has to do the right thing even if it means arresting an old man for killing the murderer of his daughter. You see Beckett at her most serious at the door in dark clothes and seemingly black hair at this difficult moment.

-In the interrogation the dad plays along with the story but is careful to only speak of a what-if scenario, not a confession. In this case (and quite a lot of others in the show) there really is not that much evidence of guilt and you end up with the feeling he will not be convicted. Unlike many of the more unsympathetic suspects in other episodes. This is the only murder-of-the-week case I can think of where we're not sure the killer was convicted.

This is my favorite episode of all to date.  Great combination of funny (their walking through the case in the man's apartment bickering like and old married couple, but still working together like a well-oiled machine) and dramatic (Beckett telling Castle about her mom's murder, the scenes with Bill Smitrovich).  Awesome, awesome, awesome episode.

One of my favorite moments takes place in the interrogation room when Bill smitrovich looks at Beckett and says something like "You can understand why one might react that way."  Makes me wonder if he had ever met Beckett or her family previously.  If this isn't what the writers intended, then it's a brilliant way of alluding to something in Beckett's history that we don't know about she tells Castle about her mom's murder at the end.

I agree – the bit where Beckett grins at Castle talking to his daughter on the phone was very sweet.  As was his "Alexis missed me."  Very cute.

Only five episodes into the series and we
reach what is to me just about a perfect 42 or so minutes of television. One of
the all time favorites. Written by Charles Murray, wish he’d stuck around
longer and beautifully directed by Bryan Spicer. The episode looks as rich and
intricate as the story it is telling. This is the episode IMO where you fall in
love with Kate (if you hadn’t already, which I had but anyway) I don’t see how
anyone can resist after this.

It tops and tails with Kate, the watch and
the ring. A beautiful beginning and I love Beckett’s sleepy morning voice, a
little lower, thicker; it’s the little details this show gets so right that
makes me want to pound my fist into the arm of my chair with joy. And there has
not been a show that’s made me do that for a long time.

My favorite moments:

Beckett accepting help from E and Castle
down from her perch at the crime scene.
And is this the first time she joins Castle’s opening joke, her “flying
monkey’s” line in response to his “ruby slippers”.

Everyone shines in this episode,
particularly in the beginning but it soon becomes the Beckett and Castle show,
like the series itself.

Castle stopping with the jokes as the case
progresses and he actually becomes the rudder that keeps the ship steady in
this one as Beckett goes just a little off kilter. It’s just a little to close
to home for Kate.

Beckett taking Castle’s coffee, and the
cliff oh sorry Castle notes. Love it.
As noted Kate's awareness of Castle being very close. “Some people love
the institution, hate the day to day,” “are you one of those people Castle?” “Guess
I just haven’t met the right girl yet” –Cherries anyone.

Castle questioning Kate in the car about
her farther and the watch, all the car conversations in this one were spot on.

Now onto what I think is one of the best
six minutes of the series. It starts with the beautiful imagery of Kate at
her murder board. Shifts to the great laser tag game with Rick and Alexis. It
struck me that Castle again can leave the case behind, go home to his family,
his life, but Beckett was stuck, caught in the mystery and the pain of the case,
unable to move forward till all the answers were known.

So she arrives at the loft and I think it’s
the first time she has gone to him, a very big step in their professional and personal
relationship. I love her wonder as she enters the loft. The Batman banter, he
has her pegged as the wounded warrior who turned to law enforcement and she doesn’t
disagree, just comes back with “you’re the multi millionaire crime fighter” a
jest but also a compliment. And then we get to the gist of why she came – those
kids need to know, Kate needs to know because as she says to Alexis in another
episode “knowing matters”.

It’s there first real -he said, she said, leading
to the wonderful apartment scene. It’s involving, revealing and humorous,
Montgomery was right she wasn’t having any fun till Castle.

And the final car scene “that’s the
difference between a novel and the real world Castle, a cop doesn’t get to
decide how the story ends.”  The
way Kate steels herself as she walks to the door.  The lighting with the great “Garbo” shot, not many actresses
can carry that off, Stana can, we get a similar shot in the final episode of
season one. I wish we had more.

As also noted Beckett’s smile at Castle the
father. How did he know that Alexis was missing him she asks, “spidy sense”
perfect. And then Kate opens up and for all the talking and jokes that he's known
for Castle is a great listener and his expression as he listens is in a manly
way, beautiful. Stana’s telling of the tale is IMO perfect. “Don’t bewilder
your audiences with substance on my account Castle”

And back to Kate's apartment and putting away
the watch and the ring, only now it’s so much more significant because now we
know how important they are. She reaches out to quietly call her dad, no happy
laser tag for Kate. Not yet anyway.

Yes, until tomorrow is more hopeful. Hope we
have many more seasons of the wonderful show to come. Love this episode.

But it's easy for any of us to fall into that trap. Remember back in FLOWERS where after they raided the apartment of Kyle Cabot and found the "souvenirs" that all of the cops from Montgomery through Ryan were "Case Closed" even though the murders were not quite right. Luckily Castle bugged Beckett enough for her to reconsider the facts and take another look (the Truth is your weapon to wield).

Exactly!  They all have been doing this for awhile so it's may be that it's human nature to do just that.  But this time what were her reasons?  It wasn't just expedience.  The circumstances are directly related to Beckett sitting in the car railing against the "cops like that" who take the easy solve and go home.  Beckett was doing just that in this case – she was pidgeon-holing the sheriff as someone who wouldn't bother filing a complete report because he didn't bother to follow up on a missing persons lead of victim who turned out to be a *dead mother*.  And then she left it at that – he's lazy, he's not diligent, he didn't care about the *mother* enough to find the truth – case closed.

But what about the father's murder?  That was a nice neat robbery-gone-wrong cold case until it got connected to this case once the mother was found dead.  That murder not only left kids without a mother but now without *both* parents?  Where was the fire?  Where was the *need* to know?  I think the difference was the connection was missed by Beckett because of her own prejudice against sloppy cops *like the ones in her mother's case* and her lack of driving need to find the killer of a father as opposed to a mother.  She spent her emotional capital in this case on finding justice for the mom.  It took Castle (and you're right about the FLOWERS case, it was at his insistance) to be clear-headed enough to make the connection and light the fire in Beckett to find justice for the dad.

It's Beckett's blind spot and I bet this near miss affected her.  Think how she must have felt once she had time to look back at the chain of events.  I bet she thought about it and kicked herself for not doing her job.  She'd be like that – holding herself to high standards.  She almost missed something that would have let a killer go untried (if not free).  It was the second time (that we know of) that Castle caught something that the others missed, but this time it was her own demons that got in the way.  It makes the scene where she goes to pick up the grandfather that much more poignant to me because she not only had act on the information, but the information was almost missed by her.  A lesser cop would have brushed it aside, but not our Kate.

Watching now in hindsight, it makes me wonder if Castle and Beckett aren't eachother's missing pieces as much as they help the other find what is missing, what needs to be found and replaced.  Even this early on we can see that they compliment eachother.  His assistance in this case, being there to help her to see past her demons, I think it's one of many bonds that have forged the relationship we enjoyed in season 3.  It's been wonderful to watch that build into a real relationship.  Geez, these guys are good!

Thanks, appreciate that.  This rewatch was a great idea so thanks to He-Touches-Things. I have watched Castle from Day One but did not discover this board till early season two I think, and then it took a long time to muster the courage to post.  What's great is that upon reading someone elses take on different episodes I rewatch (again) with different eyes, open to a new a perspective and it enriches the whole experience. Really enjoy everyone take on each episode.

The music and the lighting in the first scene is also very beautiful.  It is grotesque, obviously, but profound in the way it was shot.  In comparrison some of the bodies always bug with me (think Pretty Dead) in the way that they still have all of their coloring.  Here, like in Poof, the image at the beginning sticks to you.  The other thing I noticed was how perfectly the opening music matched everything that happened in this episode.  The sweet woman's voice almost sounding like a sad lullaby tied in with both the two girls loss of their mother, and Beckett's.  It was a really nice touch. I constantly am reminded when I look back at season one how much the music score and sound editing in this show excel.

I think Nathan says on the DVD commentary for this episode that one of his former co-stars from the soap opera he was on guest stars in this episode.  His name is Malik, if I remember correctly.  Great that Nathan brings in former co-workers and helps them work.

I've watched every episode of Castle countless times, but this time I made a connection to a specific scene and the dialog in that scene in a way I hadn't before, and I was amazed at how it eerily it forshadowed the end of season 3.

Towards the end of A Chill Runs Through Her Veins, just after they interrogate Mr Wyler, Montgomery, Beckett and Castle are sitting around her desk, and Montgomery starts the conversation…..

Montgomery: A body get's dumped because this guy Wyler didn't pay a bill…..that's..

Castle: You can say it, pretty cold.  Ironic, that such a selfish act, ultimately revealed the truth.

Beckett: (Looking at Montgomery directly) There are people who knew the truth all along.  They just chose not to come forward

Montgomery: (Looking at Beckett) Still, karma comes back and puts a cap in your husbands ass. So, all is right with the world (he exists stage left)

Now doesn't that send a chill through your veins?  Shock

BTW, I also forgot about Esposito's hair being longer in a couple of the first season episodes, and personally, I like it that way best.  smile
