You know, I just watched the first five episodes from season 1 again and it incredible interesting that in episode 5, where Beckett tells Castle the first time about her mom's murder, you also see this determination to solve the case. She absolutely HATES not solving the crime, not knowing the truth. Her disgust for the cop who put the crime in the "fitting box" without really looking for the truth is glaring. Beckett back then reminded me A LOT at Kate in "Knockdown" and "Knockout", so they layed the background for this back then. I said it before, there may be continuity problems for the romance but they have it in spades regarding their characters. There is absolutely NO contradictionary behaviour going on, everything can be seen as a organic developement of the character.

In this EP as well, you can see a small hint of what came up on the season 3 finale with Castle saying: "Ironic that such a selfish act ultimately revealed the truth" (and this actually refers to the whole betrayal issue that was dealt on Knockout). The look on Capt.Montgomery's face was priceless
