So… did everyone see it? What were your thoughts?
I've seen a lot of discussion around the web which is a great thing, most of it very positive and for the rest, most of them are at least hopeful that they'll grow to like it more as the eps continue.
If you missed the ep when it was on, you can watch online vai the ABC full episode player, you can read the recap or you can watch it again when it airs again on ABC on Sat 14th March 10/9c
As a writer (as yet unpublished – possibly the worst kind) and a big fan of Nathan Fillion, Joss Whedon, and the old Firefly series, and let me add not a big fan of sci-fi, I probably have too much to say, but here goes.
Cinematography – 3 out of 10 stars, looked like it had been shot from a closet with a Sony camcorder; musical score – 1 out of 10, dull, canned, and emotionally unconnected; supporting cast – stilted, wooden, overacting or not acting at all, mostly window dressing – I won't break it down as to who did what, 3 of 10; Fillion. 6 of 10 – he worked with what he'd been given; writing, eek. One of my former professors would describe it by saying instead of a story it's a sequence of events, and OMG the deus ex machina reasoning and the weak rabbit out of the magician's hat ending, 3 of 10.
If you want to see how good cinematography and a riveting yet simple musical score can be woven together to tell a story using a couple of booms and dolleys, rent the movie The Fugitive.
There was no tension – no sexual tension between the detective and the writer with the exception of a little near the end, and no tension building to find the killer. The conflict between them should have been more pronounced, and she should have been unequivocal in her rejection of him for it to be an ongoing theme. Making him out as a player in the beginning took away from his integrity as both a writer who understands people and the psychology in human interaction, and as a legitimate suitor for her.
Can it be salvaged? Yeah, but there's so much to fix, and who'll fix it? Start with a crucible of complex emotionally charged people working at cross purposes and turn up the heat, then stand back and let the actors act.

I think it would have been in the press releases somewhere if the woman at the card table was anyone of significance…. though of course I could be wrong!

Jack,
I think you've got some great points here. I really look forward to you posting a critique after a couple more episodes have been aired.

I enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun. I am hoping they let them get their stride. It is a nice change of pace. I am looking forward to seeing what happens on the next several episodes. I love the daughter and mother interaction with Castle.

I watched it again last night. I thought that even though it had a certain charm the rhythm was off.
Some of the "chemistry" seemed forced at this early stage. Castle seemed more jack*ss than wise*ss.
I know Pilots are hard, everyone is still trying to fgure things out, and luckily they hit their stride pretty early on. What I found amusing is that when they are about to raid the (wrong) suspect's apt she's the only one to break out the bullet-proof vest. She's by-the-book alright.
What I really like about Nathan and Stana is that they honestly listen to the other as lines are being traded and not just rattle them off by rote. They react, sometimes just with an expression that is just perfect.
Great show.

I think part of the problem with the pilot episode is a considerable amount was reshot when the series was picked up, two new cast members were added and one was lost.

Ah, I did not know that. That could be it. All that re-editing is never good.
All in all a good attempt. Charm goes a long way.

Wow, I didn't know that either. Do you know who those people were?
Nalissa, you're absolutely right about them actually listening to each other's lines. Their expressions and reactions just make the show that much more realistic.

I rewatched it today. So they swapped out the one detective played by Colby French for Det Ryan played by Seamus Dever. I noticed that Seamus was only in the interior shots, so they must have reshot some of those with Seamus. And I noticed they could have did some quick cutting to show them both at that kids apartment. But who is the other new cast member?

Just saw an episode of The Unit, with guest star Stana Katic as a special agend from the Criminal Investigation Division (season 3 episode 9). In this episode, SHE was told to "Stay in the car", to which she responded "Stop me", and she was the one wanting to take a drink after, and getting turned down. Role reversal

I think they're talking about it in the DVD commentary for this episode.

I believe the shots with Seamus were already shot in Los Angeles. Some shots were the original ones for the Pilot presentation that was done in NYC.

That's right. Any of the shots with Seamus were filmed later in Los Angeles. The original pilot was entirely filmed in New York before Seamus had been hired for the role of Kevin Ryan.

Question..
I was wondering what the behind the scenes info is on ex-wife #2, it seems as if the character of Gina was supposed to play more like one of the leads in the series. Just based on the promo photos and the pilot description originally put out to the media. My guess is that when they focus grouped the pilot the reaction to the role didn't play well, nor did he one cop who was trimmed in the 2nd episode. I'm glad they cut the role, I think it would have been way to distracting in the intial stages of the series, it would have taken from castle with his mom & dauther and then the crew at the police station.
Of course I'm not in the know, so I'm just wondering what the offical or the behinds the scenes info about the role was.
