So did anyone make it?  How did it go?  Reports ?

I went! Overall it was a great time. They filled the theatre to capacity and then some. A lot of people had to stand in the back. Fortunately I'd been there four hours, so my friends and I got pretty good seats, and Lilmac was lucky enough to show up pretty close to the start time and score front row seats!

They started the event with the Stater Kit four-minute recap of Season one, which you guys have probably seen on the ABC Castle site. Then the announcer did a short little speach describing the show, and then they played the Summer Shorts, which is about a minute or two long and also on the ABC site, and then they introduced Nathan.

Nathan sat up on the stage with an interviewer, and they talked a lot about Castle. After about half an hour, they opened up for questions from the audience, so he entertained those for the next half hour. The funniest part was when he got to the absolute last question, and the boy said "I can't help but notice the words 'Firefly' and 'Serenity' haven't been spoken all evening." And then he proceeded to ask if Nathan would ever return to that project down the road — at which point we all looked up on stage to see the interviewer hand over a buck to a smug-looking Nathan, who obviously had just won a bet. XD

They mentioned that you can download the podcast on iTunes, but I've looked for it and cannot find it. The podcast is by Apple Inc. and it should be Meet the Filmmakers (or Meet the Actor). If it doesn't turn up, we'll probably do our best to recap the questions/answers.

Well, here's what I just posted at my LJ. This is the best I can remember about the questions/answers. Too exhausted to make it sound eloquent. :P

Nathan sat up on the stage with an interviewer, and they talked a lot about Castle. They did the same basic questions you hear at the beginning of all of Nathan's interviews, which is the "tell us about this show" kind of nonsense that he's had to answer like thousands of times. So he talked a bit about Richard Castle before getting into some better questions.

One of the first things I remember him answering was how he got the role. He said he had a sort of deal with ABC that they'd "use him in something," so he would look through all the scripts for their upcoming shows and roles and stuff. And Castle was like, at the bottom of the stack. And when he got to it, he just went "This is it. I can do this." And he went into the audition or interview or whatever, and he was like "I can do this. If anyone else does this, they won't do it right. But I can do this."

One of my favorites was when the interviewer asked him about the chemistry between him and Stana. First Nathan gave a really vague answer about how it's a unique chemistry that you can't fake or replicate anywhere else with any other characters or actors on any other show. The interviewer seemed dissatisfied with the answer, so he asked if Nathan would tell us about when they first met. Nathan said they had all the girls auditioning for the role, and when Stana walked in and they introduced her to Nathan, he said everything went in slow motion, and he hummed this angelic melody, and he said there was a glow behind her. Very funny. XD

They opened it up to questions, and I was expecting it to be the usual "no one wants to be the first one, but once the ball gets rolling, everyone has a question" things. Nope. Right off the bat, there were hands everywhere. I did get to ask my question, which was roughly, "will you come to CastleCon," although I mentioned it was going to be next spring, that we were working with Kids Need to Read, and would he come as a special guest and if so, how should we get in contact with him about it. He gave me a sort of cop-out answer about his filming schedule. I guess I should have been more specific and said "after season two is done filming." He had mentioned earlier in the night that he's got a crazy schedule where he works fifteen hour days, and then has 12 hours before he has to be back. So he'll be there at six am until 9pm, then he has to be in at nine until midnight, etc. It works out that he's there until 2 in the morning after working Friday, so that's really the only time he can do events. He said if it was a weekend and he wasn't sleeping, sure. And it had to be six blocks from his house. >_< But he also said that talking to KNTR is the best way to get him involved, so I was on the right track there.

Someone asked if he'd ever consider coming back to theatre in the future, and if so would he do musicals. He was very funny when he said something like "I don't know. If it were me, and I was like 'Yes, I'm going to go see this great Broadway show, it's starring Nathan Fillion,' and then I got there, and I heard me sing? I would be very disappointed." Which is just stupid because we all know what an amazing singer he is! He mentioned how intimidating it was to sing with Neil Patrick Harris, whom he praised as an amazing singer, and Felicia Day, whom he equally praised and then told us to go buy Date My Avatar. He also mentioned how she had to pull back her voice for Dr. Horrible, which is true and I remember that from the DRH DVD. Penny was supposed to be a sort of meek, sweet character, so Felicia wasn't allowed to really give it her all. She had to pull it back. Then he mentioned that that's actually how "Better than Neil" came about on the commentary, because Nathan had to keep telling himself those things just so he wouldn't be so intimidated to sing with NPH. He just had to tell himself he was better than Neil, and then Joss just took all those lines and made the song. XD

Someone also asked how long he has with the script before he has to film it. He said they have a few days, but sometimes by the time you get to the set to film it, it's changed. So there's no point in memorizing the script and then having to memorize the changes. He said "I'm a day-of guy." He just comes in the day of the shoot and memorizes the lines. And he puts different sized boxes around the lines and that's how he remembers them. XD Then it was really funny because he was trying to say something along the lines of knowing it like the back of his hand, and he demonstrated by looking down at his hand and then he goes "Where did that ink stain come from?" LOL.

Someone also asked about what is it like filming on set versus on location. He mentioned that it's really difficult to film in the heat. Because you can be cold and pretend that you're not. But you can't be hot and pretend that you're not. And he said he's a pretty sweaty guy on a good day, so that's really tough. He talked about how departmentalized everything is. If you have something in your hand on set, that's Props crew. If that item is on the table, that's Set crew. If someone's doing your make up and your hair falls out of place, that's someone else's job.

There was a question about how much say does he have in the scripts. He talked about how this is the first project he's been in that has been so cooperative with everyone. For example, they'll come in with the script and try to say "Well, how about if we add this line?" or "How about if this happens in the scene?" and the person who wrote the episode is always there to go over it and change stuff if need be. So everyone really gets to try and make the script work and make it as close to reality as possible. Nathan mentioned earlier about how this procedural is so different. Instead of the cops all standing around the body brooding about how someone else is dead, they're cracking jokes. And he said that's what it's really like. He talked about how they'll tell jokes that always start with "So this guy gets killed." You know, this is you job, he's saying. "People are getting killed all the time. If it's your job to get out there and find the guys doing it, eventually it becomes mundane, and you have to lighten it up with humor." So I really enjoyed that part, because he's right. Very few procedurals dare touch the scenes with humor. It's a nice change of pace, and much closer to reality, when they do crack jokes.

Someone asked what would he be doing if he wasn't acting. He said his fall-back plan was to be a teacher. His parents had been English teachers, and he was going to school to get his degree. Then he got the call about being in OLTL, and he dropped school "like a hot rock." Now of course the school wants him to keep coming back to give speeches and stuff, and he wants them to give him his degree, like a trade. XD He said "Hey, you've got something I want… you know… I want something on my wall."

He also talked a bit about some writing he had done. Someone asked if he wrote or if Castle was inspiring him to write at all. He mentioned some screenplay that he and Alan Tudyk wrote (Holly, correct me if I'm remembering this wrong) and how it was incredibly involved and difficult just to get the pilot written. He can't imagine doing that weekly and having it be brilliant every time, so he said he'd "leave that to smarter men." Same thing with directing, because he was asked if he'd ever direct. He said it was too much for him. The acting was easy and fun.

He was also asked if he read murder mysteries and if so, who? He mentioned a few, including James Patterson, actually. I've been wanting to read some Patterson for a while, and at that I was just like "All right, that's it. I need to get my hands on some Alex Cross."

Someone also asked about his being typecast, although he didn't use that word. He just mentioned that Nathan always seems to get these roles where he's the stubborn or arrogant but charming guy. Nathan mentioned that he loves that role, and he's always sort of facetiously playing that role in hsi every day life. You know, he acts like he's so arrogant but he's really just kidding around. So that's a naturally easy role for him. Then he was talking about winning a Saturn award once, and he wore it around his neck. When he went to hug Joss Whedon, it was like clanging between them and he's like, "OH! I totally forgot that was there! Oh, do you have one of these? Yeah, they're pretty easy to get." All of this said in a totally elevated tone, of course. It was very funny.

Oh, the girl with the tiny dress who was first in line, who had to listen to NDG all night, asked a question about what advice he would have for anyone who wants to get into acting. I'm trying to remember what he said about that because it's a question I would have asked him myself had I not been asking about CastleCon. But his answer wasn't like a "here's what you do" sort of thing. Another girl asked if he was single, and he said "I'm unmarried," and then elaborated "If we were to make out, there is someone who would be upset about it." Then later in the evening when he told that joke he had on his twitter a while ago about the safe affairs lists (where he had his girlfriend's sister and best friend as his), he said "Not the girlfriend I have now, but another one." So yeah. The man's taken.

Oh, and someone asked what his favorite weapon is in Halo. I think he said battle rifle, but now I can't remember. He said something about three shots to the head and then a hit to the chest. And I think he made a sex joke about that too. XD Then someone asked about his voice work, and he said it was really easy. He did some voice work with people who were across the country, and it wasn't even at the same time. They would just read a line a few times, and then someone would pick out the variations that went well together. When there was a question "in the rear," Nathan made a "that's what she said" joke.

XD Nathan then answered the question for the millionth time, saying that it's not up to him if there's more Firefly. He'd find out about it from the internet just like we would. He also talked about the startling similarities between himself in Firefly and Mal in the war. He kept saying, "Don't worry guys, I know we're facing a lot of crap with the ratings, with them airing our episodes out of order, not airing some at all, but this is a great show!" And he was honestly the show's biggest fan. And then he found out they were canceled. And he locked himself in his house, drew the shades, and ate a tub of chocolate ice cream. Then he said when Joss called, he basically said to him "Good luck with that." Then he did this drunken imitation of the conversation, where he says slurring his words, "YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR PROBLEM IS JOSS? You have hope! And faith!" And he just sort of went on and on with this sad, drunken, scorned speech. XD

Couple of general things I remember: people had all sorts of ways of greeting Nathan when they got to the mike. Someone said "Mr. Fillion," and Nathan responded, "Please, call me your lordship." After the audience laughter died down, the boy said "My liege," and Nathan was like "That'll do." XD There were a few others who had variations on that sort of greeting. He also talked a little bit about One Life to Live, a bit about some faux-soap he was in called "Die-Nasty." Also, the audience was probably 85-90% Browncoats. People who didn't even care about or watch Castle. When Nathan mentioned Alan Tudyk, the crowd errupted with applause. When he mentioned Stana, it was crickets and tumbleweed. Very disappointing.

After the event, Nathan walked off and they showed another Castle clip. I couldn't find my ipod fast enough, so I woud up seeing it. Sigh. Ah well. Almost made it, with three days left. Holly was outside with a crowd at the back door waiting for Nathan to come out, so we went to join her. Everyone wanted autographs and pictures. After a while, someone told us he'd gone clean out the front door.

Thanks Michy!

I really hope ABC gets Stana out there to promote the show as well.  I don't think they realize how many of the Castle watchers are watching because of her! Cool

I know 2 watchers who would definately be out there to see her promote the show. Cool Laugh

But I hope she does, I wonder what she is doing right now if Nathan is off promoting a few different events.

My guess is that they're all working their a$$es off right now.  Nathan's not in every scene.

I just hope ABC gets some of the other cast members to do promotional gigs.  Castle is not everyone's favorite character. Wink

I agree I would love to see Lanie, Ryan and all of them out there doing promotional work. I think they choose to use Castle because he has tons of fans from Firefly behind him so they will get bigger events. They should do something promotional with all of them. Though that probably won't happen. But I do hope we see more of the other characters developed.

I just hope they get stellar ratings tomorrow. A TV pundit site said if it doesn't perform well with the first few episodes back ABC will pull it.
